Chapter 10 - Crabs with Guns!

When Winston saw one of those Coral Crabs pull out a gun, he was nearly shell-shocked! He was quite unfamiliar with the world around him, due to the slavery that he suffered throughout most of his life, so certainly, he didn't expect a crab to pull out a gun. He was surprised, but beyond that, he was intimidated, scared, and felt helpless. He had been intimidated even before one of these crabs pulled a gun, as they already had strength in numbers, but now he felt helpless to the point of self-destructive humiliation

Nevertheless, he had to decide between two options, or two tactics, so to speak. He could try to bargain with these crabs, and strike out a sort of a peace deal. The deal being that the two sides don't die today in a senseless fight. As for his second idea, it was more frantic, more violent, so he tried the first one.

"I come in peace, crabs." He yelled out. "I'm just passing through. There's no need for us to fight today."

Winston was hoping that the big rifle on his hand would intimidate these crabs enough to keep their potential hostility in check, but he was mistaken. As soon as he pitched the deal, most of the remaining thirteen crabs pulled out their guns as well, and so, it was apparent that they weren't looking for peace. It would appear that they were smart enough to know that they had an advantage, and the various guns they were carrying certainly pointed that way. A good half of them had semi-automatic rifles! They were capable enough to develop their magical abilities.

"Agagagagaga!" One of the crabs yelled out, specifically, the first one who had pulled a gun on him. "Raga!"

"Right." Winston sighed, "Why did I think that I can speak crab? Desperate times I guess."

Winston did not respect his opponents whatsoever. Despite his current fear, he would've shot them to the ground already if the situation wasn't stacking against his favor, so likewise, he didn't feel guilty for deciding to move on to his second tactic, which would best be described as a battle plan, rather than a tactic.

In just a split second, he got rid of his gun, laid flat on the ground to avoid gunshots, since he was too close and too slow to run from his enemies anyway, and then, he summoned a little friend of his. He flicked his wrist, and a baseball grenade popped up on his pointy hand!

"Your guns won't do you good here," He thought.

Afterwards, he pulled the pin, and tossed the grenade towards them with all his might! The crabs were barely two feet away from him, but that was a lot for a starfish of his size, so he really had to put in some muscle behind that throw. This was where all those years he spent in the mines came in handy, he was strong enough. Quite frankly, he was happy that he remembered to pull the pin off of the grenade this time around.

The grenade exploded a single second after it landed, and apart from the sand cloud it caused post-explosion, it also tore through some of the crabs. He could hear a bunch of them screaming, which although progressive, it also was a clear sign that the battle wasn't over yet, though he still couldn't see anything, so he didn't know how many he had killed. Luckily, this was where the system came in handy, as she was quick to flash a notification at the corner of his left eye.

[+210 system points. That was a decent throw. You killed seven of them.]

"Nice!" He grinned. "I almost shat myself for nothing, then. These crabs are a joke!"

Afterwards, he summoned another grenade, and tossed it in the dust cloud. Once it exploded, the system was quick to update him on the matter.

[-40 system points]

[+90 system points. You killed three of them.]

After this point, he was confident enough to stand up. He was done hiding, and felt certain that he could gun down the three remaining crabs. The explosions either hurt them physically through the shrapnel, or disoriented them cognitively because of the loud booms. It wasn't even a fair fight at this point, despite the fact that he was facing them alone.

"Craby crabbies…" He tried to taunt them, as he stared at the cloud. "Gagaga! Come out."

Winston had already summoned his bolt-action rifle, and urged to figure out just how powerful a thousand points of damage were. He was curious.

Just then, one of the crabs rushed out of the dust cloud, seemingly in panic, but he wasn't feeling remorseful. He shot at the crab without thinking about it twice, and saw it getting knocked back a few inches because of the gunshot!

"God damn!" He explained. "This little lady packs quite a punch! Damn near tore my arm off."

[+30 system points]

Despite its thick, protective shell, the crab was left with a large, gaping hole right through the middle of its forehead. It was dead, and as the dust cloud cleared, he spotted the two other crabs who had not known well enough to agree to his prior "non-aggression" deal.

One of them had two of its many legs blown off, and in that condition, it was trying to crawl away from danger. This was when Winston felt a bit of remorse, and so, he shot at it, and killed it. His gun shots resonated as loudly as the call of death. The rifle in his hands was a powerful weapon without a doubt.

[+30 system points]

"Consider that mercy, you crabby bastard. I didn't let you die slowly." He thought.

The remaining crab wasn't completely helpless. It had spotted Winston, and so it shot at him, but he didn't flinch. Those explosions had disoriented the crab, so it was shooting at coral, rather than at Winston.

"Sad," He sighed. "Maybe killing isn't for me? I'm starting to feel bad about these stupid bastards. Why couldn't they just cooperate?"

[+30 system points]

Winston killed the remaining crab, and so, the battle was over. The rewards, however, weren't good enough to compensate for all the stress he felt prior to the battle, and after it too.

[Total points = 430]

"That's not enough, god damn it." He said. "I'm walking through piles of arms and legs of those poor bastards, my gut feels queasy. They tried to kill me, sure, in fact I was sure that I was going to die right here, I almost shat myself even, but their deaths would've meant something more if I at least broke beyond the thousand system-points mark."

[The battle was unfair for you, yes, but I cannot give you more points than what these Coral Crabs are worth. Don't think about it too much. Enjoy the victory, and enjoy the fact that you survived this exchange of fire.]

Winston crouched down, grabbed a semi-cooked crab leg, chowed down on it, and said, "I can't enjoy this even if I wanted to. Those grenades came in handy, sure, but half the city heard the explosions. God knows that I'm not a runner, so now I gotta hide for a while."
