Chapter 12 - The Insect Woman

"A Flying Carriage?"

Upon hearing Li Wei's words, Feng Yang's expression turned somewhat strange.

After all, he had managed to escape Leek Island precisely because of a 'flying carriage.'

According to Li Wei's description, the transportation used by those 'immortals' also seemed to be the same kind of 'flying carriage.'

Could it be that the 'immortals' in Immortal Sect City were somehow connected to Leek Island?

While Feng Yang was conversing with the other, the corpses of the three villagers had already been carried back to the village by the remaining people.

As for the pig-man's corpse, several burly young men used wooden poles to carry it away in a different direction, opposite to the path back to the village.

Clearly, they intended to dispose of the pig-headed man's corpse elsewhere.

Witnessing this, Feng Yang felt puzzled.

He pointed at the pig-man's corpse and asked Li Wei, "What are they doing?"

In Feng Yang's opinion, even if the creature wasn't edible, they could simply bury or burn it. Why go through the trouble of moving it?

Hearing Feng Yang's question, Li Wei looked at him with mild confusion.

"You don't know about this?" He asked curiously. But he still explained patiently.

It turned out that monsters like the pig-headed man were quite common in this world.

Moreover, nearly all such monsters had tiny black worms, about the size of rice grains, growing inside their bodies.

Whenever these monsters died, it wouldn't be long before the black worms burst forth from their bodies and quickly burrowed into the nearby ground.

Within about three days, influenced by these worms, the area would become 'worm-infested land.'

Soon after, new monsters would emerge from this tainted ground.

As long as the 'worm-infested land' remained, monsters would continue to appear endlessly.

Therefore, to ensure the village's safety, whenever a monster died nearby, the villagers would transport the corpse to a deserted area and burn it.

After hearing this explanation, Feng Yang recalled the pig-headed man's 'heart' he had split open earlier.

It matched Li Wei's description perfectly.

After Feng Yang had cleaved the heart, countless tiny black worms, each the size of a grain of rice, had crawled out.

Was a new 'worm field' about to form there?

Thinking this, Feng Yang continued to ask Li Wei, "Do you know where those worms come from?"

"I don't know," Li Wei shook his head.

In fact, not only Li Wei, but none of the villagers in Linjiang Village knew the origin of these black worms.

The black worms and the 'worm field' they created were extremely dangerous; it was best to avoid them entirely.

As the two conversed, Feng Yang followed Li Wei to the vicinity of 'Linjiang Village.'

Linjiang Village wasn't very large, consisting of only about a hundred households, surrounded by a wooden fence.

Just as Feng Yang was about to cross into the village, Li Wei suddenly grabbed his arm with lightning speed.

"Don't go over there! It's deadly!" Li Wei explained urgently, his expression extremely serious.

To prevent monsters from sneaking in, a barrier had been erected around Linjiang Village.

This barrier was incredibly strong—almost no living creature could pass through it, including humans.

However, to allow villagers to come and go freely, the entrance to Linjiang Village had no such barrier.

Feng Yang followed Li Wei into the village.

From the outside, the village had seemed ordinary, but once inside, he discovered the entire settlement was shrouded in a white light.

According to Li Wei, this white light barrier had covered Linjiang Village since his grandfather's time.

No one in the village knew its origin.

Looking up at the white light barrier, Feng Yang frowned.

Its shape was almost identical to the one he had seen in Leek Village.

Could the white light barriers in Linjiang Village and Leek Village be connected?

Of course, this was merely Feng Yang's speculation.

Perhaps the similarity was due to both barriers being created by the same method.

After all, the white light barrier above Linjiang Village was somewhat different from Leek Village's.

The barrier here had an 'entrance' that villagers could freely pass through; their movement wasn't restricted.

Furthermore, the villagers of Linjiang Village did not lose their lifespan to any red phantoms, as no creature resembling a red ghost had ever appeared near the village.

Shortly after entering the village, Feng Yang noticed a large crowd gathered at the center, making a great commotion.

In the middle lay two children, their skin completely black. Feng Yang stared at them, confused.

Their skin wasn't darkened by the sun, it was as if someone had poured ink over them, a deep black that wouldn't fade.

The blackness seemed contagious. Not only the children, but even the ground they lay on was stained black.

Between the two children stood an old woman dressed in brightly colored clothes, with colorful chicken feathers stuck in her hair.

Feng Yang noticed she seemed to be muttering something under her breath while constantly waving her hands and feet.

The scene resembled a shamanistic ritual. Feng Yang felt somewhat speechless.

In the world from before his transmigration, customs like shamanistic rituals had also existed.

In ancient times, when medicine was underdeveloped, ordinary people would often seek shamans if they fell ill or encountered strange occurrences.

Given it was a different era, superstition was normal. But in this world of monsters and 'immortals,' shamanistic rituals might not be considered mere superstition.

At that moment, Li Wei, standing beside him, seemed to read Feng Yang's thoughts.

He smiled and explained, "This is an 'Insect Woman' we invited from the village."

"Insect Woman?"

After Li Wei's explanation, Feng Yang understood that in this world, insect women were indeed similar to shamans.

However, worm women here didn't cure diseases; their role was to exorcise evil spirits.

As for evil spirits, they took many forms, and those infected exhibited various symptoms.

Hearing this, Feng Yang roughly understood. "You mean, these two children are possessed?"

"Those two children were like this yesterday morning, but we don't really know what's going on," Li Wei replied worriedly.

Feng Yang continued observing the situation ahead.

The old woman muttered incantations for a long time. After a considerable period, two streams of black energy finally surged from the children's bodies.

As the black energy emerged, the darkness on the children's skin began to fade.

"It's working! It's working!" The gathered villagers exclaimed in amazement, praising the old woman's methods.

Witnessing this, Feng Yang couldn't help but feel impressed; it seemed the old woman was indeed extraordinary.

But just then, a sudden change occurred.

Shortly after the two streams of black energy appeared, they swiftly entered the old woman's body.

Influenced by the black energy, in the blink of an eye, her entire body turned completely black.

She let out a sharp scream, then collapsed to the ground, her fate unknown.
