Chapter 19 - Money

Seeing the bronze demon turn around, Feng Yang immediately jumped out of the carriage, ready to run at any moment.

However, after seeing the reactions of the other bodyguards/escorts nearby, he abandoned this idea.

Feng Yang noticed that although these bodyguards all showed fear, none of them made a move to run away, which is very abnormal.

Bodyguards weren't suicide soldiers.

Their relationship with those bodyguards (escort agency) was merely one of employment.

The fact that these people weren't running meant they must have a way to deal with the monster.

Realizing this, Feng Yang unfastened the long sword from his waist, held it in his hand, and observed the situation ahead of the caravan.

Things were indeed as Feng Yang had predicted.

The head bodyguards, Li, at the front of the caravan, produced a cloth bag from somewhere and carefully threw it towards the bronze demon's feet.

The bag seemed to possess some kind of magic; for a moment, the bronze demon's attention was completely drawn to it.

Seeing this, Feng Yang looked puzzled.

"Was the bag filled with food?"

The question was, what kind of food could be so tempting that it could make this kind of monster abandon its attack on the caravan?

Feng Yang continued to observe.

The bronze demon picked up the cloth bag from the ground and tore it open.

Instantly, countless round bronze coins were scattered across the ground.

Feng Yang finally understood. The bag contained a lot of bronze coins!

As the money fell out of the bag, an eye inexplicably opened on the bronze demon's brow.

"Money-grubbing?"

This idiom immediately came to Feng Yang's mind upon seeing this.

The bronze coins seemed to have an immense attraction for the bronze demon.

After grabbing the coins, it frantically stuffed them into its mouth.

At the same time, the nearby bodyguards showed expressions of relief.

After finishing the coins, the bronze demon didn't leave.

Seeing this, the head bronze, Li, threw out another small bag of coins.

After repeating this three times, the bronze demon finally stopped swallowing the money.

It let out a strange cry, then landed on all fours and quickly fled from everyone's sight.

Was that all it took to get rid of the monster?

Feng Yang had never heard of the bronze demon's habit of "swallowing money," neither this nor in his past life, this is completely new thing for him.

Curious, he asked the bodyguard beside him, "What exactly is that monster?"

The bodyguards had traveled far and wide, their knowledge far exceeding that of ordinary people.

Seeing Feng Yang's question, the bodyguard replied, "I've heard that bronze demons are formed from the deaths of greedy people."

"People can become monsters after they die?" This was the first time Feng Yang had heard such a thing.

The bodyguard smiled and explained, "Only those who die in the 'worm-infested area' can become monsters."

The 'worm-infested area' was a very mysterious place.

According to these bodyguards, almost all the monsters in the world were formed in the 'worm-infested area.'

The bodyguard continued, "The Bronze Demon isn't particularly dangerous. Just give it some money to feed it, and it'll leave on its own."

He paused, seemingly waiting for Feng Yang to ask.

Seeing this, Feng Yang readily agreed. His face lit up with admiration as he asked, "What about particularly dangerous monsters?"

Feng Yang's question only made the bodyguard's expression more radiant.

He squinted, shaking his head, and said, "Let me tell you, I've seen far more disgusting and terrifying monsters than this."

He abruptly stopped, staring intently ahead.

"What's wrong?" Feng Yang asked, waiting for more.

Seeing the bodyguard sudden pause, he followed the bodyguard gaze towards the front of the caravan.

It turned out that the bronze demon, seemingly unsatisfied with the coins, had returned and blocked the caravan again.

Left with no other option, the head bodyguard, Li, had to throw out another bag of coins.

But that wasn't enough. The bronze demon, after devouring several bags of coins, showed no sign of stopping.

Seeing this, head bodyguard, Li, frowned.

He turned and walked to the carriages at the back, saying to Feng Yang and the others inside, "Give me all your money."

"Why?"

Before Feng Yang could speak, a wealthy merchant in his carriage objected coldly.

The merchant's fat face contorted as he said to head bodyguard, Li, "I rode in your carriage, I paid for it. Why should we pay for what the bronze demon ate?"

It turned out that Feng Yang wasn't the only one traveling with this caravan.

The wilderness of this world was teeming with monsters and evil spirits, and ordinary people needed the protection of these caravans to travel between places.

Therefore, besides the caravan guards, the carriages were also full of passengers.

The combined wealth of these people was considerable, especially that of the portly merchant.

He was carrying a huge amount of money on his way to the Immortal Sect City; almost half the space in the last carriage was filled with his valuables.

If such a large sum of money were to be devoured by the monster, the portly merchant would naturally find it unacceptable.

Hearing the merchant's words, the head bodyguard, Li, looked troubled. He patiently explained to the merchant, "I estimate this isn't a Bronze Demon; it should be a 'Golden Demon.'"

It turned out that bronze demons were formed from extremely greedy people who died in the 'worm-infested area.'

The monster's appetite depended on the degree of greed of the deceased in life.

The more greedy a person is, the greater the appetite of the bronze demon that forms after death.

Those with an extreme obsession with wealth create even more troublesome bronze demons, as they are insatiable, no matter how much money they are fed.

These bronze demons are known as "golden demons."

Li, the head bodyguard, suspects that the monster blocking the caravan is likely a golden demon.

Golden demons have an exceptional sense of smell, even capable of detecting the scent of money.

They can sense any money hidden by passersby.

In other words, once targeted by this golden demon, no one present can escape without handing over all their possessions.

As for fighting this golden demon head-on, including Li, there are eleven bodyguards present.

If the servants of the other passengers are included, the number of combatants is approximately twenty.

With so many people, if they really fought to the death, they could barely manage to take down the golden demon.

The problem was, if the entire convoy went at it together, while they might be able to defeat the demon, at least half of the participants would be lost.

No one is fearless.

Therefore, apart from the wealthy, fat merchant, no one present was willing to fight the golden demon to the death.

Seemingly knowing his money was lost, the merchant looked utterly dejected.

However, the wealthy merchant was, after all, a businessman and knew how to make choices.

After a moment's thought, he gritted his teeth and promised the rest of the group, "If you can kill that monster, I'll give you half the money I have!"
