18.
Vernon groaned and tried to speak, but his voice failed. From the shadows writhing beside Mortavius, Nagini—the horrifying serpent—emerged, growing rapidly until she became a colossal snake ten meters long and one meter wide.
Desperate, Vernon began to babble:
"We were forced to care for him since he was little. Dominus threatened us…"
Between sobs, he confessed he had never wanted Hadrian in his house, that Dominus had forced them, that they only obeyed out of fear. He even invoked the son of the Virgin Mary, the crucified son of God, and even Santa Claus—something that irritated Mortavius's ears more and more.
His words, however, were abruptly cut short when Nagini struck, her jaws snapping brutally around his head.
Mundungus looked away, unable to face the lifeless body sliding to the floor. Arabella and Dudley were crouched beside him, witnessing the scene with wide, horrified eyes.
Dudley opened his mouth, about to let out a scream of terror, but Arabella acted quickly and clamped a hand tightly over it. The boy struggled against the grip, but Mundungus knew there were no words that could comfort him now.
Outside, Mortavius gave his command:
"Spread out. Find the boy. He cannot be far."
Mundungus's voice was an urgent whisper:
"We need to hide immediately."
Arabella did not hesitate. She grabbed Dudley and dragged him toward the basement, while Mundungus, holding the orb, followed and shut the door behind them.
On the floor rested an old suitcase. Arabella released Dudley and tried to calm him:
"The Order is coming. They will save everyone."
Mundungus, however, did not dare offer hope. He knew that by the time they arrived, it would already be too late. Mortavius had brought death with him.
With no other options, he opened the suitcase. Arabella followed him. A few of her cats also hopped inside, and reluctantly the woman shut the entrance.
The case was an artifact, magically expanded to contain a hidden space where they could hide without being detected.
They entered. And there they remained, waiting for the storm to pass.
