The black bus continued down the highway, leaving District Seven farther and farther behind.
The lights of Castria gradually disappeared in the distance. Buildings gave way to stretches of forest, then hills, and eventually mountains that rose beneath the night sky.
Inside the bus, nobody spoke much.
The mission was over but everyone understood that what they had captured tonight was only the beginning. After several more miles, Aldric looked through the window.
"This is where I'll stop."
President Sky glanced at him. The bus slowed before eventually pulling onto the side of the road.
Aldric stood and walked toward the rear door. He looked at the SLCO operatives one last time.
"Good work today."
The operatives nodded. Aldric turned toward President Sky. She smiled and nodded back. Then she handed him the evidence she had collected from Keno's residence.
"The envelope is in there too," she said quietly.
Aldric took it.
"I'll look through everything."
The rear doors opened.
Aldric lifted Keno and stepped outside. The cold mountain air immediately surrounded him. He watched as the operatives remained inside. The door closed. The bus pulled away.
Within moments, its lights disappeared down the highway as it headed back toward Castria and eventually toward SLCO headquarters.
Aldric waited until the bus was completely out of sight. Then he took out the secure phone Fox had given him. He dialed a number. After a few rings, someone answered.
"Sir Aldric?"
"Nick?"
"Yes, sir."
Aldric: "Are you still by the house?"
nick: "Yeah. I'm finished with it. I just moved in the furniture and equipment you ordered."
Aldric: "Good. I want you to drive down the hill and pick me up."
Nick: "Alright. I'm on my way."
Aldric ended the call.
He looked toward Keno.
"Looks like you're coming home with me."
He secured Keno and waited.
A few minutes later, headlights appeared through the trees. A black Suburban approached and stopped nearby. Nick stepped out. He opened the rear compartment.
Aldric placed Keno inside and secured him before climbing into the passenger seat. Nick closed the door and returned to the driver's seat. The Suburban began climbing toward the mountain.
For several minutes, neither man spoke. Eventually, the trees opened up. A large structure appeared farther ahead. From the outside, it looked surprisingly modest.
Nick pulled up and aldric stepped out. He looked at the building for several seconds. Then he smiled.
"I'm impressed, Nick."
Nick chuckled.
"Built it exactly how you wanted."
Aldric looked around. The structure was positioned naturally against the mountain terrain. Nothing about it immediately suggested that it was anything more than an isolated residence.
That was precisely the point. Aldric removed his tactical vest and equipment. He placed everything into a duffle bag.
Nick watched him.
"Are you curious about what I'm doing?"
Nick laughed.
"Kiddo, I have military experience. I was a master sniper."
Aldric looked at him.
Nick continued, his expression becoming more serious.
"But let me tell you something. I'm thirty-nine, almost forty. I've seen things that nobody should have to see or hear about."
He looked toward the mountain.
"I had to get away from that life."
A pause.
"Those people were evil."
Nick rubbed his jaw.
"Look at 11/9. You think the official story tells people everything?"
Aldric remained silent.
Nick continued carefully.
"Back then, I couldn't speak about what I believed was really happening. My family would've been put in danger. Your old man taught me something important—how to blend in."
He looked at Aldric.
"And now I see you've started finding things out for yourself."
Nick smiled faintly.
"You're actually doing something about it."
He extended his hand.
"So why would I question it?"
Aldric shook his hand. Nick's grip was firm.
"I'd rather participate than sit around anymore. I don't want my grandchildren growing up inside a system I don't trust."
His expression hardened.
"And if I have to put my life on the line for that change, then so be it. I won't go down without a fight."
Aldric nodded.
"You have my respect, sir."
Nick laughed.
"No need for the formalities, Aldric. I work for you now. Remember?"
Aldric smiled.
"Okay. Help me get him into the basement."
Nick:
"Say less."
Nick opened the rear compartment and helped Aldric move Keno inside.
They entered the house. From the outside, the building looked relatively small.
Inside, however, was another story. The interior extended far beyond what the exterior suggested.
Reinforced doors. Hidden corridors. Security systems. Multiple layers of structural protection and beneath all of it was something far more impressive. They reached an elevator. Aldric entered a command.
The doors closed. The elevator descended three levels down. When the doors opened, an underground facility stretched before them. The bunker was already operational. Banks of computers lined the walls.
Communication equipment occupied several stations. Multiple displays were integrated into the central control system. And in the middle of the room stood a large transparent glass display.
Aldric walked toward it.
"TIAS."
The system remained dormant. Nick looked at the display.
"So that's the AI?"
Aldric:
"Yeah."
Aldric had spent two days developing it.
TIAS—Tactical Intelligence Agent Support.
It wasn't designed merely to answer questions.
It could process complex information, analyze statistics, construct simulations, coordinate the bunker, monitor security systems, and organize enormous quantities of data.
Aldric had also designed its authentication system personally.
TIAS recognized his voice through a combination of vocal characteristics and authentication parameters.
A recording wouldn't be enough. A copied voice wouldn't be enough. Only Aldric could activate its full command structure.
Nick looked impressed.
"You built this yourself?"
Aldric shrugged.
"Most of it."
Nick shook his head.
"You're something else."
They continued through the bunker. Eventually they reached another room. It appeared almost empty. A single reinforced chamber stood behind transparent material.
From the outside, anyone could observe the person inside.
But from within the chamber, the surrounding facility was obscured. Keno was placed inside. Aldric checked the restraints. Everything was secure. Nick stepped back.
"That should do it."
Aldric nodded.
"Thanks for everything, Nick. I sent the money to your bank account."
Nick checked his watch.
"Yeah, I have to go. Tomorrow's Alice's birthday. I need to grab something for her."
Aldric smiled.
"I'll send fifty extra. Consider it a gift to her from me."
Nick looked at him.
"You don't have to do that."
Aldric said with a smile in his face:
"I know."
Nick laughed.
"Alright, kiddo. Call me if you need anything else."
Aldric:
"I will."
Nick left. The bunker became silent.
Aldric watched the elevator doors close. Then he turned toward Keno's room. The former operative remained unconscious. Aldric walked toward the central computer station and sat down.
He looked at the clock.
"It'll take a few hours for the sedative to wear off."
He leaned back.
"In the meantime…"
His eyes moved toward the transparent display.
"TIAS."
The display immediately activated.
The transparent surface illuminated with a blue interface.
A calm voice answered.
"Hello, Sir Aldric. How may I help you?"
Aldric Replied:
"Display all live cameras."
TIAS:
"Understood, sir."
The display changed.
One feed became several. Then dozens. The house, bunker, mountain road, surrounding forest and perimeter. Hidden angles around the property. Everything appeared simultaneously.
Aldric watched the feeds for several seconds.
"Good."
He reached for Keno's belongings. One by one, he examined them. The photograph. The damaged communications device. The tactical equipment. Then the envelope.
Aldric stopped. The red seal caught his attention. He turned it over. There was no obvious name. No address. No explanation. Only the symbol. Aldric stared at it.
Then he looked toward TIAS.
"TIAS."
TIAS:
"Yes, sir?"
Aldric:
"Is it possible to control and brainwash the global population on a massive scale using Symbols ?"
The AI paused.
"Yes, it is possible."
Aldric remained silent.
TIAS continued.
"Historical records contain accounts describing organized groups influencing education, politics, economics, culture, and social structures. Some ancient and modern texts refer to groups using symbolic organizations and hierarchical systems."
Aldric looked at the red symbol.
TIAS continued.
"One historical tradition refers to a group described as the Symbolic Masons. Interpretations regarding their influence vary significantly, and available historical evidence does not establish that such a group controls global society."
Aldric said nothing.
For several minutes, he simply stared at the envelope.
Then he stood.
"I'll investigate that later."
He left the basement.
Two floors above, he entered the bathroom and washed away the exhaustion of the night. When he finished, he changed into fresh clothes.
The house was silent. Aldric descended the stairs again.
Back in the bunker, the blue glow of TIAS illuminated the room. Keno was still unconscious. Aldric sat down. He placed the red-sealed envelope on the table.
His eyes narrowed.
"Let's see what you were carrying, Keno."
And somewhere beneath the mountain, surrounded by machines, cameras, encrypted systems, and unanswered questions, Aldric began waiting for his prisoner to wake.
