Night draped itself over the Zeus district like a heavy cloak. Clouds churned above as if the heavens argued among themselves. Rain wasn't falling tonight — which was exactly why Selene felt uneasy.
"When thunder rests," she muttered, walking beside Kairo through a quiet stone corridor, "storms plot."
Kairo glanced at her, expression unreadable. "Or someone is holding the storm still."
Their target lay ahead — The Storm Relic Vault, a forbidden annex beneath the academy. Only high-ranking elders entered, and only during ritual storm announcements. But Helios had mentioned earlier in training that the elders were travelling to Poseidon territory for "diplomatic reasons."
Which meant tonight, the vault slept unguarded — supposedly.
Kairo's steps made no sound, cloak swaying like a shadow with intent. Selene matched his pace, moonlit aura suppressed to a whisper. She looked calmer than she felt. Inside, her heart raced.
Not fear — excitement.
Aether hummed in her veins like a caged song.
Kairo stopped before a massive door carved with lightning serpents. Runes pulsed faintly. The metal smelt like burnt iron.
Selene's eyes narrowed. "Ancient lock?"
Kairo knelt, tracing patterns with fingertips. "Storm script — responds to Aether resonance."
He inhaled, channelling a tiny thread of aura — not fire, not dark flame — but the artificial lightning technique Helios unknowingly taught him days earlier. Sparks crawled across his fingers, touching runes gently.
Not enough to attract attention, just enough to mimic an academy student.
The door shivered… then opened with a slow growl.
Cold wind rushed out, smelling like old storms and forgotten wars.
Selene smirked. "Show-off."
Kairo shrugged lightly. "You like it."
She looked away quickly. "In your dreams."
Into the Vault
The inner chamber was endless — shelves stretching into shadow, filled with relics pulsing faint Aether. Artifacts floated in glass cubes, humming like bees. Each held power — raw, frightening.
Some whispered.
Some stared back.
Selene walked to a floating dagger of crystallized lightning. Its blade crackled like captured sky.
"This one calls to me," she whispered.
Kairo touched her wrist gently. "Not tonight. We take knowledge, not treasures. Relics bring attention."
She exhaled. "Right."
But she couldn't stop glancing back. Aether felt hungry around that dagger — or maybe she was.
At the vault's end, Kairo found what they came for — a scroll sealed with storm wax and a black emblem shaped like a broken crown.
He recognized that mark.
Same one he found in the secret library archive.
Same one mentioned in records about Malrukh.
Selene's breath hitched. "Kairo… are you sure—"
He already broke the seal.
The scroll unfurled.
Ink moved like living shadow, reshaping into an illustration:
A dark figure crowned with torn lightning halos.
Eyes like voids devouring stars.
World kneeling under his throne.
Beneath, text shimmered:
"He who fell from thunder shall return through thunder.
When aether gates crack and gods tremble,
Malrukh, Devourer of Pantheons, rises again."
Selene stepped closer, voice trembling with wonder and fear.
"He… eats gods?"
Kairo's jaw tightened. A memory flashed — Sensei's calm voice, always gentle yet wrong:
"A god is just a throne waiting for a better king."
He shut the scroll slowly.
"Sensei isn't seeking peace. He's hunting the throne."
Before Selene could speak, footsteps echoed outside.
Someone was coming.
Caught in the Storm
Lantern-light flickered under the vault arch. Two guards? No — heavier steps. More confident. Aura pressure rolled through the air like lightning crawling across skin.
Helios entered.
But not alone. Beside him walked an older man with cloud-grey hair and thunder scars along his arms — Elder Damocles, Zeus clan's high war scholar.
Kairo and Selene exchanged a single glance — silent strategy.
Hide dual elements.
Speak little.
Fight only if needed.
Helios' eyes locked on them instantly.
"You two. In my academy, inside the relic vault at midnight." His smile was thin and dangerous. "Brave… or foolish?"
Damocles studied them quietly, seeing more than Helios ever could. His gaze paused on Kairo's fingers, lingering on the faint lightning residue.
"You manipulated storm runes," Damocles murmured. "Without Zeus blood."
Kairo's heart remained still. "Aether is universal. Storm is simply another language."
The elder's eyes sharpened — intrigue replacing hostility.
"Interesting boy. Name."
"Kairo."
"Background."
He hesitated. Selene stepped forward smoothly.
"We are travelers from the Eastern Peaks. We heard of Zeus Academy's reputation and sought knowledge. We found this place open and… curiosity led us."
A tiny lie. Wrapped in confidence.
Damocles' expression didn't soften — but he did not call them out.
Instead, he turned to Helios.
"Test them. If they survive three strikes, they stay. If not — lightning purges dishonesty."
Helios grinned.
"Gladly."
Selene whispered, stepping back. "You fight cold, remember."
Kairo stepped forward alone.
Helios cracked thunder between his palms — three bolts formed like serpents of raw storm.
The first bolt shot forward. Kairo deflected with minimal movement again — same calm grace that unnerved the prodigy days ago. Gasps echoed from watching students drawn by commotion.
The second bolt lashed out faster — Kairo slid beneath it, cloak brushing lightning harmlessly.
Helios' eyes widened.
Last strike — quadruple density, air screaming.
This time Kairo didn't dodge.
He caught it.
Bare handed.
Lightning writhed like a living beast, but Kairo guided its path calmly, redirecting Aether through his veins like a flute player taming a wild note. Blue sparks danced across his arm.
He crushed it into harmless sparks.
The room fell dead silent.
Damocles' lips twitched — almost a smile.
"Young… yet terrifying."
He nodded approvingly. "Kairo and Selene shall remain. We will observe them."
Helios stared — equal parts admiration and competitive fire.
"You owe me a duel rematch," he muttered.
Kairo smirked lightly. "Train harder."
Selene elbowed him softly — tone down the menace, her eyes said.
Kairo ignored her.
Later That Night
They slipped into their room, heartbeats still racing with leftover adrenaline.
Selene closed the door, leaned on it, and exhaled long.
"That was too close."
Kairo sat on his bed, expression unreadable again. "Worth it. Now we're inside deeper."
She watched him quietly — the boy who acted carefree yet fought like winter steel.
He spoke too much outside battle.
He spoke too little inside himself.
"Hey," she said softly, sitting beside him.
"You're changing."
He looked at her.
"How?"
"You're calmer. Colder. Stronger. Like you're walking toward something only you can see."
Kairo didn't deny it.
He remembered Sensei's words, Malrukh's scroll, and the storm that never truly slept inside him.
"I just… want answers," he whispered.
Selene nodded. "Then I'll walk with you."
Silence settled.
Not awkward — warm.
Somewhere far beyond Zeus territory, another duo in another village faced their own trials unaware of the darkness growing.
And far away, in a temple forgotten by gods, Malrukh opened one red eye slowly… smiling.
