Chapter 22 - The Kingdom That Trembled

The throne room of Lunareth had never been this loud.

Shoko stood beside Ariandel and Elyndra while the council of elves argued across the long crystalline table. Magic lanterns glowed along the marble pillars, pulsing with the tension that filled the room.

"We cannot let that thing approach the capital again," said Elder Virian. His voice shook the air. "It broke through our outer barriers like they were cloth."

King Aesthor leaned forward. His golden armor reflected the lantern light. "We will not abandon our home. We reinforced the wards, and we can push it back."

Queen Seraphielle shook her head. "We all saw the signature in the air. It is not a creature. It is not a mage. It is something older. You all felt it."

Ariandel sighed softly. "It is the same presence that attacked the valley. The same one hunting Shoko."

Every pair of eyes turned to him. Some fearful. Some pitying. Some silently begging him to have answers he did not have.

Shoko swallowed. "If it wants me, then let me help fight it."

A few council members murmured in distress.

"You are still a child," Elder Seris protested. "We cannot ask this of you."

Elyndra stepped forward, golden hair shimmering. "He is not just a child. He is a Third Weave mage, trained by one of the strongest mages alive." She gestured to Ariandel. "He understands that the kingdom will fall if we do nothing."

There was something in Elyndra's tone, almost like she said more than she meant to. She quickly looked away. Shoko caught it, but for now he let it go.

King Aesthor finally stood. The hall fell silent.

"The decision must be made." He pointed toward Shoko, Ariandel, Elyndra, then to himself and the queen. "We five will confront the masked being. No others. The people will evacuate to the inner sanctums."

A murmur rippled through the room.

Elyndra's eye twitched. "I mean yes, that is the correct team. Probably. Maybe. Mostly."

Ariandel gave her a long stare. "Elyndra."

"What." Elyndra froze, hands behind her back. "I did not say anything suspicious."

"You almost did," Ariandel replied.

"I absolutely did not."

Shoko whispered, "You definitely did."

Elyndra puffed her cheeks. "I did not. Probably."

It was the only moment of humor the room saw that day.

The council voted. The decision passed.

The group chosen to fight the masked figure stepped out of the chamber as horns began to echo across the kingdom. Alarm bells followed.

Evacuation had already begun.

Lunareth had never looked like this.

The pure crystalline city, usually glowing with serene moonlight, now shimmered with hurried motion. Families gathered belongings. Guards ushered civilians into underground sanctuaries. Shields of blue magic flickered across the walls like veins of lightning.

Ariandel watched the people move.

"Do you think they will be safe?" Shoko asked.

Ariandel placed a hand on his shoulder. "They trust their leaders. And we will make sure their trust is not misplaced."

Elyndra walked beside them, her expression a careful mask, as if her thoughts were racing far ahead of everyone else.

Shoko studied her.

"Did you see something again?" he asked softly.

Elyndra froze. "What do you mean."

"You almost said something in the council room," Shoko said. "You have been doing that a lot."

Elyndra looked him in the eyes. There was fear there. And something older. Something sad.

"I do not know what you mean," she said with a smile too forced to be real. She touched his arm lightly before walking ahead. "Come on. We have to reach the front plaza."

Ariandel exchanged a glance with Shoko.

"She is hiding something," Ariandel whispered.

"I know," Shoko replied.

They arrived at the Moonlit Plaza, Lunareth's heart. Crystal arches curved toward the sky, glowing with soft light. The royal couple waited at the center, looking both regal and weary.

"We make our stand here," King Aesthor said.

"Shields ready," Queen Seraphielle commanded.

Ariandel stepped beside Shoko. "Stay close to me. Do not try to face it alone."

Shoko nodded.

He meant it.

At least, he thought he did.

The ground vibrated.

A ripple of air rolled through the plaza. Lanterns flickered.

A shadow stepped through the city gates.

The masked figure was taller than before, or maybe it was simply clearer to see in the open. Its body glimmered faintly like it was not fully solid. Its mask was smooth, featureless, glowing faint white. Its wings shifted like mist and light, but corrupted somehow, like torn pages in a book.

It looked almost like Shoko.

But twisted.

Ariandel inhaled sharply. "It evolved again."

King Aesthor raised his blade. "By the Light of the Peaks, we stand."

The masked figure tilted its head.

"Shoko." Its voice sounded layered, like dozens of whispers speaking together. "You do not belong with them."

Shoko felt something pull in his chest. Something cold.

Ariandel stepped in front of him. "You do not touch him."

The air cracked.

The masked figure moved.

Faster than sound.

Ariandel shoved Shoko aside just as a blinding flash ripped the plaza. The masked figure's blade of white-gold light tore through the barrier she conjured. It hit her across the stomach.

Ariandel collapsed.

"ARIANDEL!" Shoko screamed.

Blood hit the ground.

Not much, but enough.

Enough to break him.

Everything inside Shoko snapped into a cold, hollow void. His heartbeat slowed. His breath steadied unnaturally. His mind went silent.

Just like when he was a slave.

Just like before he met her.

Emotionless.

Still.

The masked figure turned toward him. "Ah. There you are."

Shoko walked forward.

King Aesthor shouted, "Shoko, stop!"

Queen Seraphielle raised a shield, but he slipped through it like water.

Elyndra grabbed his arm. "Shoko. You cannot fight it alone. You cannot."

He looked at her with flat, empty eyes.

"I have to."

She flinched. For a moment she saw the boy from the book she remembered. The one destined for darkness if he walked this path.

"Please," she whispered. "Do not do this."

He gently pushed her hand away.

Then he stepped toward the masked figure.

Magic surged around him in silent fury as threads erupted from his palms. Thousands of shimmering silver strands crystallized in the air.

The masked entity lifted its head.

"Show me."

Shoko vanished.

The battle exploded across Lunareth.

Shoko's threads slashed through the white-gold air, slicing chunks of crystal off rooftops. The masked figure countered with beams of pure radiance. Arches shattered. Statues crumbled. Light clashed with threads in blinding flashes that tore apart the plaza floor.

Shoko flicked his hand and a web of razor threads shot forward.

The masked figure blocked most of them, but one thread wrapped around its arm.

Shoko yanked.

A sound like tearing fabric echoed.

The masked figure staggered.

Its arm dangled, threads of glowing energy spilling from the wound.

The masked figure stared at it, almost confused. "Interesting."

Shoko moved again, but his body trembled. The longer he fought, the colder he became. Numb. Empty.

He prepared another strike.

"Shoko!" Ariandel's weak voice reached him.

It hit him harder than any attack.

"Shoko, stop. Come back."

He froze.

Elyndra ran to him, tears in her eyes. "Shoko. Look at me. Look at us."

His threads flickered.

"Shoko," she whispered. "You are not that boy anymore."

Ariandel reached out a bloody hand. "Please… come back."

His chest tightened.

His fingers shook.

The numbness began to crack.

The masked figure tilted its head. "You are weak."

A blast of light streaked toward him.

King Aesthor intercepted it, his armor ringing like a bell.

"Retreat!" he ordered. "We have injured it. That is enough."

The masked entity took a step back.

Then another.

It stared directly at Shoko.

"We will meet again."

It dissolved into fragments of pale light and vanished into the night.

Silence fell.

Shoko finally collapsed to his knees, shaking.

Ariandel and Elyndra reached him first.

Ariandel cupped his face, tears sliding down her cheeks. "You scared me."

Elyndra hugged him. "Never do that again."

Shoko's voice cracked. "I am sorry."

Ariandel pulled him close. "You are here. That is what matters."

The kingdom around them lay shattered.

But Shoko was back.

And for now, that was enough.
