Lida was exiting the grocery store humming her favorite tune that was on repeat in her head. She looked around the parking lot and spotted her car then noticed the sky was getting darker. She looked all around but couldn't see any clouds but the sun was getting darker. She glanced directly at the sun and noticed that it was partially blocked. The light from the sun was dimming and the fact that it was turning to night in the middle of the day started to worry Lida.
She quickly pushed her cart to her SUV and signaled the lift to open up. She quickly grabbed her groceries and stuffed them in the back and jumped into the vehicle to start it. She turned the key and at the same time an intense sense of dread took over her body. She thought about her kids at home and that her eldest was watching them but they might freak out at the darkness.
She pulled out of her parking spot to be facing what could only be described as a massive spaceship. The reason the sun was blotted out was due to the large spaceship now hovering above the downtown area. Suddenly explosions were heard and Lida could see beams of red light flashing down from the spaceship that she could only guess was weapon's fire. She instantly started to panic and put her foot on the pedal accelerating so hard her tires started to spin out on the pavement. The vehicle finally grabbed and shot forward accelerating her into the street where she started dodging vehicles that had stopped to look at the spaceship.
The vibrations were now being felt in her vehicle as she would occasionally look in her rearview mirror when a flash of red light dominated it. To the right of her was the mall that suddenly exploded after a flash of red light hit it directly. The windows exploded out of her vehicle on the side of the mall as the blast was quite powerful. She regained her composure only focusing on getting back to her kids.
Ahead of her Lida saw a streak of dark smoke come down and land ahead of her on the road. The vehicles closest swerved out of the way or came to a halt. Lida wasn't interested and went offroad driving on the sidewalk going over 70 mph. She glanced over at what had crashed and saw it was an orb then suddenly opened up and appeared that the outer shell was retracting into itself. Then an extremely large creature stood up and opened its eyes looking directly into Lida's eyes.
Shivers ran down her spine as she had never experienced quite the feeling she was feeling currently looking at the creature in the eye. The creature lunged at the closest vehicle and smashed the window in and pulled out the human inside. The man was screaming as his body was forcefully removed from his vehicle without the seatbelt being removed properly. The creature looked at the human then suddenly opened its mouth and chomped the head off the man.
Lida's foot smashed into the gas pedal and her SUV reached 100 MPH quickly but the road was about to turn sharply and Lida had forgotten about that. She was looking in her rearview mirror to see if the creature was following then brought her focus forward right as the road turned hard right. She had no chance to react and her SUV ran through the guard rail and plunged into the river.

Lt. Powell of the UNAAF was in formation behind his captain slightly to the left. In any direction he could see 100+ planes flying with him as a few thousand planes were launched at the mothership that is currently hovering over downtown Chicago. They had left Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in a rapid succession and all hands were on deck and called in from off duty. Earth had never been invaded before and everyone was responding.
As they got closer to their destination suddenly the sky was darkening and smoke was rising from what used to be downtown Chicago. The mothership had unloaded its ordnance onto the city below and most structures at this point were levels completely. Weapons fire from the mothership was raining down systematically going further and further out. The highways were full of cars that had long been abandoned or destroyed as the ground forces focused on them first, trapping people from escaping their destruction.
The closest plane suddenly exploded as a red beam struck it from the mothership. All planes immediately reacted and started evasive maneuvers. The attack was further than their missiles could lock on despite the size of the mothership so the planes were forced to continue while dodging incoming fire. The city was no longer being attacked by the mothership as all guns were now focused on the aerial assault.
Powell's missile lock suddenly toned out at the same time the plane to his right exploded from a direct hit. The explosion caused him to shift his plane and flip over, he didn't even think bout what he was doing and unloaded his four aerial missiles that had a target solution. Letting go his ordnance he knew his bullets would do nothing to a craft that size so he pulled hard on the stick to do a nose dive that eventually pulled him in the opposite direction of the mothership.
The chatter was pure confusion as everyone was calling out issues. The closer they got to the mothership the more accurate their laser attacks became and the quicker the planes were being shot out of the sky. Many saw the maneuver that Powell just pulled and followed suit as now everyone had unloaded all their missiles at the mothership.
"I need all of you pilots who just flew away to get back in, we need to take out those turrets and we can with machine…" The transmission broke off, one could only assume the pilot speaking was just shot down. Powell looked around at the destruction that they caused and could see that they had ground forces invading us as well. A pod had just landed a mile in front of him and his targeting computer gave him his information that he could attack the pod.
Powell pulled the trigger as soon as his system told him to, the pod had lowered and the creature inside had just stood up as the first bullets from Powell's aircraft ripped right through the creature's leg, then chest, then head killing it instantly. The knowledge it could be killed gave Powell a new sense of purpose and decided he could help better by giving the ground units support. He turned his plane around and headed up 90/94 unloading on any creatures his targeting computer would pick up.
A few other pilots saw Powell flying low and taking out the creatures on the ground so they joined in and took on other parts of the highway. Powell unloaded the last of his bullets and was now completely dry which then meant he was allowed to return to base to reload. The turn he made was at a low altitude, he had just passed downtown Chicago when his wing took a hit from debris from a building exploding below.
His cockpit became a series of lights flashing and multiple alarms going off while the plane suddenly started losing altitude. Lt. Powell didn't have time to think he just instinctively grabbed the eject handles which launched him out of his plane while pointed in a parallel to the ground angle. The parachute expanded but didn't slow him down enough as he flew into the side of a building at a speed that broke all of his bones upon impact.

President Gerold Kilgore had spent his entire life wanting to be president of the United States of America ever since he was 10 years old. His dream was crushed the day the world experienced the "Unraveling". The United Nations of Abilities was formed and a lot of pressure was put on the original leaders to make the planet as prosperous as possible under one government. He could never have imagined that when this change would happen he would be the one they would call on.
Dreams come and go but the underlying goal of one's dreams is to pursue their destiny, at least that is what Gerold told himself. It was the only way to transition his mind from running the most powerful nation on the planet to running the planet itself. They had only settled down with all of the abilities manifesting and the chaos had died down for him to get the biggest news any leader of a planet could ever receive. "We are not alone sir"
The 5 star general of the UNA Military was blunt and directly looked into the president's eyes to let him know it was not a joke. "Just a moment ago a mothership 10 miles in diameter just entered our atmosphere above the city of Chicago. They did not try to communicate that we are aware of, they simply opened fire and soon ground forces were launched out of the mothership going from building to building attacking anyone and everyone."
"Sir, we recommend a full force response, we need the entire might of the UNA being launched at this immediately." The 5 star general did not mince words and was brief and too the point. "We are ready to launch a response right now sir."
President Kilgore was standing there in disbelief. They had debriefed him about possible alien life forms that we had encountered but a full scale attack was not a part of his briefing he had ever received from his intelligence or defense secretaries. He jolted back to reality and looked the general back in the eye with a simple reply "Give them everything we have!"
"Sir, permission to launch Project Planetary Defense" The general looked the president in the eye waiting for confirmation. Gerold remembered this briefing about a satellite in orbit that could attack threats from above. "How long till it would be in range?" was the only question the president had for his general, who looked to his assistant who had a tablet she was working on quickly.
29 minutes till the satellite was in range to attack so all available aircraft that would be there quicker we immediately dispatched. President Kilgore looked around at the room and decided he needed to state the obvious but also needed to get it in motion. "We need to inform the planet that we are under attack and that these aliens are considered hostile." As the president said that a monitor flickered to coverage of the event going on in Chicago.
The first scene was of a CCTV capturing the landing of a pod, the pod opening up and forming a small backplate on the creature. The creature saw some humans who screamed and tried to run away, there was an elderly man who wasn't quick enough to run away and the creature grabbed the man showing he was significantly larger and bit off his head. The creature chewed on the head then spit it out taking a bite on the stomach then spit that out. The creature then launched itself off the view of the monitor as screams were heard in the distance.
The display then showed a CCTV monitor showing the overall mothership above downtown Chicago with the buildings leveled or on fire. The flat terrain made the scene look much worse as most of the buildings had been flattened. Other monitors now were filled with camera views or satellite views of the Chicago area. They realized that millions have probably already died as Chicago was known to have over 10 millions people living there.
The other monitors started to show the view of pilots as the response was arriving. The screens went from visual to static shortly after the attack began which put a number of the staff feeling they might not be able to defeat this foe if their fighter jets were easily being destroyed. The main mothership had taken several hundred missile attacks but the missiles were doing too little damage.
President Kilgore was looking at the wrong monitor when the big moment happened but everyone's eyes quickly shot over to the closest monitor displaying the mothership. The PPD Satellite had launched a diamond rod from orbit using the gravitational force of the planet tore a massive hole right through the middle of the spaceship and the moment it was at the center exploded in a mach 5 tactical nuke.
The resulting explosion was spectacular to behold, the mothership's reactor exploded with the nuke to further increase the explosive range as the ship disintegrated and a large crater was left in the ground for a short time till the Lake Michigan water came crashing in and filled up the crater expanding the Lake's total surface area by over a mile.
