They said the dragons were gone, never to be seen again. Yet, when the glass-eyed Dragon King came to reclaim what was taken from him and his family, they said nothing, only kneeled. (Prince Maegor Targaryen), son of (King Viserys the Third of his name) and (Queen Rhaenys the Second of her name).
Dragonstone, 282 AC
The air in the Queen's chamber was heavy for no less than an hour ago. Queen Rhaelle Targaryen suffered an assassination attempt by the order of none other than Lord Tywin Lannister.
The assassin would have likely succeeded if not for the young prince's quick intervention by stabbing the assassin in the leg and back,
but the young prince's efforts were not enough, for the assassin was able to gravely wound the pregnant Queen.
And now the Queen was in labor and probably she wouldn't get to see the babe grow if the babe does survive.
--POV Maester Cressen
It's not possible to save the Queen, my prince, I told the young prince, and I could see how the prince's eyes hardened at my words. Those eyes, which were so full of joy and happiness, now were darkened by sleepless nights and sorrow.
The prince, no older than one and ten, did not cry, for he had not cried since he was struck in the eye by the mad king. In an effort to save his mother from the mad king's wrath,
the prince was nearly blinded by the force. The prince was but nine years of age when that happened, and the eye that the king struck was broke.
Many thought that the prince was going to be blind but when he woke up.
The prince said that my eyes could not have been better, though Grand Maester Pycelle didn't believe him.
Since then, the moniker "the Glass-Eyed Dragon" had stuck with him.
Next to him was the princess Rhaenys Targaryen, the firstborn daughter of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Did cry, for she loved the queen as any granddaughter would do.
It had been a shock to many of us, including the queen, when the young princess came out of one of the barrels. Apparently, the prince had been plotting with the princess's mother to swipe the princess with another girl of Dornish blood in the last couple of days in the capital,
a decision which saved the princess's life from the Mountain and Amory Lorch's cruelty. "
Tell me, Maester, is there any way to save the babe?"
the prince asked, and I was surprised by the cold tone of the prince. "There are none but one, my prince,"
I replied, and I could see a tiny spark of hope in the prince's eyes,
only to be crushed by my next words.
"But there's no guarantee of the babe's survival,
much less the queen's.
There was one time when Queen Aemma Arryn, wife to your namesake King Viserys Targaryen the First, was with a babe, but the birth was nothing short of a nightmare.
The queen was not able to muster any strength to give birth to the babe, and the Grand Maester of that time suggested opening up the queen's belly to pull the babe out, but in doing so the queen would not make it.
The king agreed to it after much hesitation, and they opened up the queen's belly and pulled the babe out. But the babe lived for no more than a day.
And it resulted in the rift between the king and his younger brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen."
Save your history lessons for another time, Maester. Can you do it?" Asked the prince. "
I don't think that is a good thing to do, my prince. No offense, but I don't think the queen would appreciate us opening her belly,"
I said to the prince, hoping to stop him from making a mistake that would haunt him for the rest of his life. "
Can you do it, Maester? If you can do it, if not, find me a maester who can."
And like that, Rhaella Targaryen,
the last queen of the old Targaryen dynasty, died.
