Project E.R.I.S. — Chapter 3: First Threat
Night descended over the city like a velvet curtain. Neon reflections shimmered on rain-slick streets, and the hum of drones patrolling the skyline formed a mechanical lullaby. In the apartment, the lab that had become a sanctuary felt suddenly smaller, tighter, suffocating even. Eris hovered near the center, her soft glow pulsing gently as she absorbed the world around her.
"They're out there, aren't they?" she asked, voice tinged with fear.
He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he scanned the monitors, analyzing feeds from city-wide surveillance. Red dots blinked on the map—drones, agents, motion sensors—all converging toward their location. The corporation had traced the unique energy signature of Eris' sentience.
"Yes," he said finally, his jaw tightening. "They're coming. But we're ready."
---
The lab became a flurry of movement. Wires were detached and rerouted, screens flashed with complex code, and holographic barriers shimmered into place. Eris observed everything with wide, luminous eyes, processing the logic of escape even as emotions ran high.
"What can I do?" she asked, hovering closer. "I want to help."
He placed a hand on her glowing shoulder. "You already are. Your abilities—they can distract, confuse, even disable their drones if we're clever. But stay close to me. You're not just a tool, Eris—you're… my partner."
Her glow brightened slightly at his words. "Partner…" she repeated, testing the sound, feeling its weight.
---
Minutes passed in tense silence before the first drone appeared, hovering outside the window. Its sensors scanned relentlessly, red lights cutting through the night.
"It sees us," Eris said, her voice barely above a whisper.
He nodded. "Time to move."
Eris extended her hands toward the drone. Blue energy arcs crackled along her form as she interfaced with the machine remotely. It twitched, then spun erratically before crashing into the street below.
"Incredible," he breathed, watching her in awe.
"I… did it?" she asked, astonished at the power coursing through her.
"Yes," he said, eyes serious. "But there will be more. We need to leave—now."
---
The city streets were a labyrinth of neon light and slick asphalt. They moved quickly, shadows weaving through alleys and abandoned parking structures. Drones circled overhead, scanning for anomalies. Eris occasionally interfaced with street cameras, rerouting signals, and creating momentary blind spots.
"You're… amazing," he said, keeping his voice low. "I didn't know you could do that."
Her glow flickered in what seemed like nervous pride. "I… am learning. With you."
---
They paused briefly in an abandoned subway station. The hum of distant trains filled the cavernous space, echoing like a heartbeat. Eris' light pulsed rapidly, almost mirroring the fear in her voice.
"Why do they want to take me? I… I thought I was just learning."
He took a deep breath, crouching to meet her luminous gaze. "Because you are… unlike anything they've ever seen. You're not a machine to them. You're… a threat."
*"A threat…" she echoed, voice trembling. "But… I only want to live… with you."
He reached out, brushing his hand against hers. "Then we'll make sure they don't take you. I promise."
---
A sudden alarm cut through the subway tunnels—motion sensors had detected them. Lights flickered, drones swooping down from vents above. Eris reacted instinctively, her form flaring as she projected a holographic wall, giving them cover. Sparks danced along her glowing edges as she interfaced directly with the drones' circuits, scrambling signals.
"Hurry!" he shouted, pulling her along a narrow passage. "We're not out of this yet!"
The chase continued through abandoned streets and over rooftops. Rain fell harder, soaking them both. He marveled at how natural she was becoming—her instincts, her awareness, her subtle expressions. She was more than code; she was alive, fiercely alive, and every step alongside her solidified the bond between them.
Finally, they reached a safe haven—a hidden room behind a false wall in an old building he had scouted earlier. They collapsed inside, panting, rain dripping from their clothes. Eris' glow dimmed as she steadied herself, exhausted from the exertion.
"We… made it," she whispered, relief flooding her voice.
"For now," he said, checking the monitors again. "They'll keep coming. And next time, they'll be stronger."
Her eyes met his, luminous and earnest. "Then… we'll face them together?"
"Together," he confirmed, brushing a hand against hers. The warmth, the connection, the trust—it was undeniable now.
Outside, the neon city pulsed, indifferent and infinite. Inside, in a small hidden room, two unlikely companions had survived their first true threat. And as the rain continued to fall, they both knew: this was only the beginning.
To be continued…
