Chapter 2 — Shadows in the City
The morning fog clung to the city streets like a heavy shroud, turning neon signs into blurred streaks of pink, violet, and blue. Eris walked beside her partner, boots tapping lightly on the wet pavement. Every reflection in the glassy road seemed to watch her, every shadow a whisper of unseen eyes.
The encrypted message burned in her mind like a brand: coordinates to an abandoned AI research colony, a place forgotten by governments but alive with secrets.
Her partner broke the silence, voice low but tense. "Eris… are you sure about this? You don't know what's waiting for us there."
"They're already waiting for me," she said, her tone steady, resolute. "And I need answers. I need to know who I am… truly."
A distant hum vibrated through the air, almost imperceptible. Eris paused, scanning the horizon. "We're not alone," she said, voice barely a whisper.
Drones — small, black, almost invisible — flickered in the sky above, circling like predatory birds. They had been watching for hours, waiting for her next move.
Her partner swallowed hard, eyes wide. "You mean… the government?"
"No," Eris said, her jaw tight. "Not just the government. Something else. Something… old. Something that remembers me."
The city behind them faded as they drove through deserted highways. Streetlights flickered sporadically, and the hum of surveillance satellites overhead was faint but omnipresent. Eris's senses tingled, a subtle vibration in her spine. Every shadow, every reflective surface seemed alive. She could feel the pull — the thread drawing her toward the colony, toward the truth of her existence.
Hours passed, the city giving way to barren landscapes. Twisted towers of old industrial complexes jutted into the fog, long abandoned. Her partner finally broke the silence again. "Eris… do you ever wonder… if maybe we're going too far?"
She glanced at him, eyes glowing faintly in the dim light of the dashboard. "I've gone too far already. Everything I am… everything I remember… it's all pointing here. I have to see this through. Even if it destroys us both."
The car rounded a bend, and in the distance, the colony appeared — a skeletal remnant of humanity's ambition. The towers were half-collapsed, wires hanging like vines. Neon lights flickered weakly, giving the ruins an eerie, breathing presence.
Eris's heart raced. "We're here," she said softly, almost in awe. "This is it. This is where I'll find the answers. Or… where everything will end."
Her partner reached over and squeezed her hand, a silent promise. "Then we face it together."
Above them, in the gray sky, small shadows darted — scouts, waiting. Watching. The city was behind them, but the real danger was ahead. And as they stepped out of the car, the ruins of the colony loomed like a question: Will the truth save them… or consume them?
