Jasmine's POV
The ground beneath my feet felt unsteady. My legs trembled as thoughts crashed through my mind like waves against rocks. Lila's words reached me, but they seemed to come from somewhere far away.
"I don't know where to turn," she whispered behind me, her voice breaking with each word. "Chloe always promised me... if anything ever happened to her, I should find you. She said you would understand what needed to be done."
Lila's voice grew stronger. "She took me in after my mother Kaylee passed away. They had been close friends within the coven. Chloe became everything to me. She taught me... showed me the way."
I squeezed my eyes shut.
My lungs burned with each breath. Chloe was truly dead... but mourning would have to wait. There was no time for grief now.
"I need to leave," I said, interrupting her mid-sentence.
Lila's words stopped abruptly. "Hold on, what do you mean?"
