Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Underbelly of Luminara Reach

The floating isles of Luminara Reach never slept. Even in the perpetual twilight, the core districts thrummed with quiet ambition. Joshua moved through the Grand Plaza with the refined, regal bearing expected of an Earl. His dark robes were simple yet impeccable, his posture straight, every step measured and deliberate. A faint, youthful warmth lingered in his eyes — just enough to keep him approachable — but nothing more. To the nobles who watched him pass, he was the anomaly, the "passer-by" who had ascended with his entire family and showed no desire to play their games.

He was here for a routine Trade Association errand, nothing more. Yet the politics of the 3rd Heaven pressed in from every side like an invisible storm.

Three major factions dominated noble life in Luminara Reach, and each viewed Joshua differently.

The Old Blood — ancient houses like House Varyn and House Kael — saw the 3rd Heaven as their eternal domain. They had spent centuries carving out influence, hoarding the best star mines, controlling Trade Association seats, and passing titles down through carefully arranged marriages. To them, Joshua was an insult. He had arrived with nothing, brought his parents and twins along, and treated their magnificent realm like a comfortable inn on the way to higher heavens. They resented the manor and star mine granted to him simply for ascending as a noble. In their eyes, he was a temporary blight — useful only if he could be manipulated or ignored.

Lord Kael himself approached Joshua near a glowing fountain of condensed starlight, voice smooth and laced with false warmth.

"Earl Joshua," he greeted, offering a shallow bow that was technically correct but carried subtle disdain. "Still no interest in the upcoming Conclave of the Reach? Many of us are discussing the allocation of newly discovered mid-rank star mines. Your… perspective as a recent arrival might prove enlightening."

Joshua inclined his head with perfect regal poise. "I appreciate the invitation, Lord Kael, but my family's focus remains on personal cultivation. We have no designs on local influence."

Kael's smile tightened almost imperceptibly. "Of course. The passer-by path. How refreshing." The words carried the faintest edge — a reminder that some nobles still muttered about him behind closed doors.

The Rising Stars — ambitious newcomers, often S-rank climbers who had earned their titles through raw talent rather than bloodlines — viewed Joshua with a mix of envy and cautious respect. They saw his group ascension as proof that the old rules could be broken. A few had quietly reached out over the past year, offering loose alliances in exchange for introductions or shared resources. But Joshua had politely declined every overture. To them, he was a wildcard — someone who had succeeded where many failed, yet refused to join their quiet rebellion against the Old Blood.

One such Rising Star, a sharp-eyed woman named Lady Serin, passed him moments later and offered a genuine nod. "Still climbing alone, Earl Joshua?" she asked quietly, voice carrying only for him. "Some of us could use a man who isn't afraid to ignore the old families. The next Trade Association vote on star shard distribution could shift if enough of us stand together."

Joshua's reply was measured and calm. "My path is my own, Lady Serin. I wish you success in yours." He kept walking, regal and reserved, but inside his mind raced with cunning calculations. Interesting. She's testing whether I'll become a useful pawn against the Old Blood. Not today.

The third faction was the smallest but most dangerous: the Silent Hoarders. These were nobles who operated in the shadows — controlling black-market suppliers, influencing rift exploration permits, and quietly sabotaging anyone who threatened their monopoly on high-grade resources. They hated Joshua most of all. He had bought the Starfall Site at auction despite their attempts to drive the price up, and his refusal to engage in politics made him unpredictable. They couldn't bribe or blackmail him easily, so they watched and waited.

Joshua felt their eyes on him even now — subtle surveillance constructs hovering at the edges of the plaza, low-grade automatons reporting back to unseen masters. He allowed a tiny, private smirk to touch his lips the moment he was alone in a quiet alcove. Let them watch. They have no idea the Starfall Site is already yielding high-grade shards faster than they can imagine.

He slipped into a secluded garden pavilion, far from prying ears. The regal mask dropped instantly. Joshua leaned against a glowing crystal pillar, arms crossed, a mischievous and cunning grin spreading across his face. "Those Old Blood fossils think they own the heavens," he muttered to himself, voice low and playful. "They hoard mid-rank mines like dragons on gold, while I've got a high-grade beast quietly pumping out enough shards to buy half their estates. And the Silent Hoarders? They're still trying to figure out how I slipped their net at the auction."

He raised one hand, letting [Fire] bloom gently across his palm — warm, nurturing, embracing. The flames danced affectionately for a moment before he twisted his will, turning them into scorching, incinerating fury that could melt ore in seconds. Then [Lightning] crackled into existence around his other fist — dominating, assertive, consuming. The two elements swirled together in a controlled display only he could see.

"[The Glitch] is the real insurance policy," he whispered with a sly chuckle. "One wrong move from them and their fancy essence techniques will turn into children's toys. They think I'm just passing through. They have no idea I'm building something that will outlast every one of their little empires."

A soft chime sounded from his S-rank Ascendant Jade. Aether's voice was sharp and curt, as always.

Joshua's grin turned sharper, eyes gleaming with cunning delight. "Of course they have. Let them play their games. While they fight over crumbs, I'll keep stacking the deck."

He straightened his robes, composed his expression back into the calm, refined Earl the world expected, and stepped out of the alcove. The mask was flawless once more.

But deep down, the playful, mischievous, fiercely protective young man who had once been a sixteen-year-old climber was already ten steps ahead — weaving quiet plans, calculating every risk, and ensuring that when the twins turned sixteen in one and a half years, the entire family would ascend with advantages no noble faction in the 3rd Heaven could touch.

The politics of Luminara Reach were a beautiful, treacherous dance.

Joshua had no intention of joining it.

He intended to rewrite the music entirely.
