Their footsteps thud on the concrete as they race toward the gateway of the Underground. Their lungs ache yet fear drives them with greater speed.
They rushed into the tunnel halting once the heavy metal door shuts securely behind them.
"You kid!" shouts The Electric Mutant. His voice buzzes with interference. Sparks erupt from his tightened fists.
River lifts his hands in submission retreating. "Sorry, alright! I wasn't trying to kill them."
"Sherlock intends to destroy us! Are you aware of who Sherlock's ? He can lock us up immediately. Discard the key!"
Samantha rests against the wall her chest rising and falling rapidly. Perspiration trickles down her forehead irritating her eyes. She observes the two men pacing around each other like beasts. She moves closer placing one hand on River's chest and the other, on the Electric Mutant's creating space between them.
"Stop!" she snaps, her eyes glowing yellow.
"You don't understand! It's his blame " the Electric Mutant snaps, directing a trembling finger, at River.
"Alright alright it's his mistake. Yet we're still a group we need to lie " Samantha proposes, brushing sweat off her forehead.
"Lie? That's nonsense. Sherlock is clever enough to deduce what really went down " the Electric Mutant retorts sharply.
"I didn't mean to do it I promise," River begs, his voice quivering.
The pair of mutants fix their eyes on River.
"What do you mean you didn't?" Samantha questions, rubbing her neck where the fur is fading back into skin.
"Yeah what are you trying to say?" The Electric Mutant moves nearer the atmosphere, around him carrying the scent of ozone. "Clarify."
River gulps sharply. "I sensed something. I sensed… someone manipulating me. I promise I didn't mean to do it."
"Sure as if we'd buy into that " the Electric Mutant mocks.
He lifts his arm. A sharp streak of lightning crackles across the sky heading directly toward River's chest.
River moves quickly. He falls to the ground twisting to the side right as the lightning strikes the wall behind him.
"Man trust me! I didn't mean to do it!" River shouts, rushing back up to stand.
Samantha grins. She reclines against the wall folding her arms. Evidently she's having fun watching the scene.
"Carry on everyone " she remarks with dryness.
The Electric Mutant disregards her. His gaze falls upon a rusty sedan stationed in the garage corner destined for scrap. He lifts both arms. Blue lightning crackles from his fingertips connecting to the car's metal body, like wires.
CREAK.
Unexpectedly for River, the car. Rises, from the ground floating in the air supported solely by the strength of the magnetic field.
"Holy crap " Samantha whispers quietly. The performance has just improved.
Out of nowhere a voice breaks the silence.
"Well well. How's work going?"
The vehicle slams down onto the ground with a BANG.
The trio of mutants twirl about.
A silhouette emerges from the darkness. The immaculate suit. The costly watch reflecting the glow. The presence of authority.
It is Sherlock.
"U-um," River stammers, freezing in place.
Before he manages to bury him with his speech the Electric Mutant interrupts him.
"The quartet of mutants fled."
Sherlock halts his steps. The temperature, in the space falls by ten degrees.
"Fled?" Sherlock murmurs. "I assumed you'd take care of it?"
He observes the burn marks, on the wall and the damaged vehicle. "Tell me why the two of you were arguing."
River and the Electric Mutant exchange glances. Fear flickers in their eyes. They are at a loss, for words.
"They were bickering since… each accuses the other of allowing the mutants to get away " Samantha breaks in her tone hoarse yet firm.
Sherlock fixates on them for a painful pause. He glances at his watch.
"Well return to your duties. I require the two mutants. The other two are of no concern " he states coldly.
He pivots sharply. Vanishes into the darkness of the hallway his steps resonating as he goes.
They exhaled together unaware they had been holding their breath.
Everyones attention shifts, to Samantha. She is smiling broadly.
"You're welcome " she replies. "Now both of you figure out how to fix this issue. Then I won't require my portion anymore."
Samantha leans away, from the wall. Begins moving toward the exit treading cautiously into the darkness.
"Why is that?" River inquires, puzzled.
Samantha stands motionless. She glances behind her her eyes shining in the darkness.
"I'm not fond of drama."
Then, she is gone.
