Chapter 13 - EPISODE 13:FIRESIDE

Maple Valley — Autumn Festival Night

Night settled gently over Maple Valley like a warm blanket woven from gold and amber.

The city had always been beautiful in autumn, but during the annual Westridge University Autumn Festival, it transformed into something almost magical.

Rows of maple trees glowed beneath strings of warm lanterns.

Small cafés surrounding the university remained open long past their usual hours, welcoming students with steaming coffee, cinnamon pastries, and laughter that spilled onto the sidewalks.

The cool breeze carried the scent of roasted corn, caramel apples, cinnamon, burning firewood, and freshly brewed tea.

Every street leading toward Westridge seemed alive.

Families from nearby neighborhoods wandered through the campus.

Alumni returned to relive memories.

Local musicians performed beneath temporary stages.

Students who usually hurried between lectures now walked without checking the time.

For one weekend every year—

Deadlines stopped mattering.

Grades could wait.

Tonight belonged to memories.

---

Deep inside the university grounds...

The largest open courtyard had been transformed into the heart of the celebration.

A massive bonfire burned proudly beneath the open sky.

Golden sparks drifted upward before disappearing among thousands of stars.

Around it, hundreds of students sat in large circles on wooden benches and picnic blankets.

Some roasted marshmallows.

Some played cards.

Some simply talked.

Acoustic music drifted softly through hidden speakers while lanterns swayed gently above everyone's heads.

The atmosphere wasn't loud.

It was alive.

---

Lisa Walker paused near the entrance of the courtyard.

For a long moment...

She simply watched.

Her brown eyes reflected the dancing flames.

A soft smile slowly appeared on her face.

"...It's beautiful."

Beside her, Sophie let out a quiet whistle.

"I knew the festival was famous..."

She slowly turned in a complete circle.

"...but nobody told me it looked like this."

Lisa laughed softly.

"I don't think pictures could do it justice."

Students moved happily around them.

Photography Club members captured candid moments.

Art students sketched the bonfire.

Music students tuned guitars.

Everywhere she looked—

Someone was creating a memory.

For reasons she couldn't explain...

The place already felt nostalgic.

As though someday—

She would miss this exact moment.

---

"Finally!"

A familiar voice interrupted her thoughts.

Kevin.

He stood several meters away balancing three paper cups in one hand and two bags of snacks in the other.

"...You two are late."

Lisa folded her arms.

"We're exactly on time."

Kevin shook his head dramatically.

"No."

He pointed at an imaginary watch.

"You are emotionally late."

Sophie sighed.

"That sentence doesn't even make sense."

"It doesn't have to."

Kevin grinned proudly.

"I'm the funny one."

Lisa couldn't help smiling.

"Who told you that?"

"I did."

"Ah."

"Very reliable source."

Sophie burst into laughter.

"I honestly don't know how Austin survives living with you."

Kevin looked offended.

"He thrives."

From somewhere behind them came a familiar calm voice.

"...I tolerate."

The three turned simultaneously.

Austin Carter stood a few steps away.

Hands tucked inside the pockets of his dark hoodie.

His expression remained exactly the same as always.

Calm.

Unreadable.

His presence felt strangely different from everyone else's.

Where Kevin brought energy...

Austin brought silence.

And somehow—

Both balanced each other perfectly.

Kevin pointed dramatically toward him.

"See?"

"He talks."

Austin raised an eyebrow.

"Barely."

Lisa smiled unconsciously.

It was becoming easier to understand Austin's dry humor.

Not because he joked more...

But because she had begun learning how to hear the words hidden between his silences.

---

Before anyone could continue—

Several students suddenly looked toward the pathway leading into the courtyard.

Someone was approaching with a guitar slung casually across one shoulder.

Ethan Philip.

Wearing a dark green jacket over a plain white T-shirt, faded blue jeans, and his usual effortless confidence.

His slightly messy black hair moved gently with the evening breeze.

As he walked, several girls waved.

He waved back naturally.

A group of juniors greeted him.

He greeted every one of them by name.

Someone called,

"Hey Ethan!"

He smiled.

"Good to see you."

Everything about him looked effortless.

He never seemed to be trying.

People simply gravitated toward him.

Kevin looked at the guitar before grinning widely.

"Oh no."

Ethan stopped.

"What?"

"You brought backup."

Ethan blinked.

"It's... a guitar."

"Exactly."

Kevin nodded dramatically.

"Now nobody can resist you."

Several nearby students laughed.

Even Austin lowered his head for a second...

Almost hiding what looked suspiciously like amusement.

Ethan sighed.

"I seriously considered not coming."

Kevin threw an arm around his shoulder.

"But you did."

"I made a mistake."

"A wonderful mistake."

Lisa shook her head while laughing quietly.

Watching the group together—

It felt...

Comfortable.

Natural.

As though these friendships were beginning to settle into something real.

Not forced.

Not accidental.

Simply growing.

---

The bonfire crackled louder as more students gathered around.

A faculty coordinator stepped toward the center with a microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

The conversations gradually softened.

"Tonight isn't about competitions."

He smiled warmly.

"It isn't about grades."

A few students applauded.

"It's about remembering that university isn't only where careers begin..."

He glanced around the enormous gathering.

"...it's where people meet the versions of themselves they haven't discovered yet."

The crowd responded with warm applause.

Kevin leaned toward Lisa.

"I was expecting free food."

Lisa elbowed him gently.

"Shh."

"I'm listening."

"No, you're not."

"I'm emotionally listening."

She rolled her eyes.

"You've spent too much time with yourself."

"I agree."

Austin answered quietly.

Kevin looked offended again.

"I receive no support."

"You earn it."

Lisa laughed.

For the first time that evening—

Austin looked toward her.

Not for a second.

Longer.

She noticed.

Their eyes met briefly.

Neither spoke.

Neither looked away immediately.

Then the applause around them broke the moment.

---

A student from the Music Society stepped onto the small wooden stage.

"We thought we'd begin tonight with something simple."

He looked toward the audience.

"But..."

His eyes found Ethan.

"...we have someone here who owes us a performance."

Instantly—

Cheers erupted.

"Ethan!"

"Come on!"

"Play something!"

Kevin stood immediately.

"I support this decision."

Ethan looked genuinely confused.

"I never agreed to this."

"You don't have to."

Kevin pushed the guitar gently toward him.

"The democracy has spoken."

Ethan sighed dramatically.

"You people are exhausting."

"But lovable."

"...Debatable."

The crowd laughed.

After a moment of hesitation—

Ethan finally walked toward the stage.

Lisa watched curiously.

She had known Ethan as the confident boy who could talk to anyone.

The flirt.

The extrovert.

The guy every girl seemed to notice.

But somehow...

She couldn't imagine him sitting quietly with a guitar.

He adjusted the microphone slightly.

Looked around once.

Then smiled sheepishly.

"I'm not singing because Kevin believes I should."

Kevin shouted proudly,

"You're welcome!"

Laughter spread through the courtyard.

Ethan chuckled before sitting on the stool.

His fingers rested gently against the guitar strings.

The entire courtyard gradually became quiet.

Then—

He began to play.

The first notes floated gently into the autumn night.

Soft.

Gentle.

Almost fragile.

The conversations around the bonfire slowly disappeared until only the music remained.

Lisa's smile faded into quiet admiration.

She hadn't expected this.

Not even close.

The confident, endlessly talkative Ethan Philip...

Played with remarkable tenderness.

Each chord carried a calmness that seemed completely different from the personality he showed every day.

Even Austin had stopped reading.

His book rested closed beside him.

Kevin simply nodded along with the rhythm.

Sophie whispered almost unconsciously,

"...He's actually really good."

Lisa answered without taking her eyes off the stage.

"He really is..."

For those few minutes—

Nobody saw Ethan the flirt.

Nobody saw Ethan the popular guy.

They only saw...

Ethan.

And somehow—

That felt important.
