Chapter 3 - 3

Dante had a hard look in his ice blue eyes almost detached from emotion all together. "That's not our concern Derik. Put her in the cells. She'll be another one of the humans statistics. Just another girl that wandered into the forest and vanished. They won't be any the wiser." Dante said coldly.

"I can't. Dante please... I can't do that to her. Please don't make me do it." Derik was almost in tears as he begged. Dante regarded his beta, surprised by the uncharactoristic behavior. Derik hated humans almost as much as Dante did. He had killed humans almost gleefully during the war. Dante hated thinking about those days.

His father had been killed three years before the war ended, leaving a thirteen year old Dante to take up the position of Alpha and lead the pack through the worst of the violence. He had always wondered if the violence had affected Derik at all. They never spoke of what happened during their blood soaked days that had earned them the human titles of Demon and Reaper. Names that he knew were still whispered in fear to young human pups as a warning.

Derik had been known as the demon to the humans because death hadn't come quick for his victims. Derik had been very found of evisceration and had often shifted one paw and used his claws to open the bellies of his victims and watch as they tried to put their organs back in their bodies while slowly bleeding out.

Dante had been merciful in comparison to his best friend's cruel tactics. He much preferred to end the life of his victims as efficiently as possible, preferring to use a hand gun to put a bullet through their skulls. It had been quick and painless for every human he had come across, wether they were man woman or pup.

"This isn't like you, Demon." He said bluntly and saw Derik flinch at the name he had earned at the young age of fourteen. Dante closed his eyes and tried not to remember the violence that had taken Beta Callahan and his mate from them, leaving Derick to pick up the pieces of his world and put them back together. Derik hadn't been quite right when he had joined the war effort and yet Dante hadn't tried to stop his sadistic ways.

"Dante..... please.... I'm begging you.... Please don't make me do it..... I can't do it." Dante sighed and shook his head as he saw the truth of the matter. He knew that ending the human girl's life would end Dante's as well. Such was the mate bond.

"Fine..... But she earns her keep just like everybody else." As Dante watched relief wash over his best friend's face he wondered if Derik realized what he had found in the trembling human girl who had blood running down her leg again. "And get her a sanitary napkin. Don't want everyone having to see that." As he spoken he pointed to the blood on her leg. Derik cussed loudly and spun around to deal with the problem. Dante shook his head and turned to go. "Derik... She's your responsibility. Anything she does.... You will be the one to pay the price." He said over his shoulder just before he left the room.
