Chapter 4 - 4

Robin was numb. She felt empty and hollow. She knew that the two men were discussing her fate but couldn't bring herself to care much. At this point a quick end to all her suffering would almost be a welcome relief. She was terrified of the large black haired man that her companion had called Alpha, to be sure. But for some reason she couldn't bring herself to attempt escape. Not that she would get far. Then she heard something that made her take notice.

"This isn't like you, Demon." Robin had heard that name whispered in parks and schools. It had been used as a warning to children. And whispered by children huddled together as they tried to scary each other. Robin thought back on what she had been told ten years ago. 'if you are to cross paths with one, pray he is the Reaper'. The words sprang unbidden to her mind and she felt her bladder clench in fear. She realized that she was not safe with the man that had brought her here.

Robin tried to focus on what was being said but couldn't hear over the sound of her own pounding heart. She watched as the black haired man turned to go then paused at the door to say something she couldn't make out. Then she was alone with the Demon once again. "no..... please.... don't go...." The words came out in a strangled whimper between gasps of air. She felt a warm hand on her waist and suddenly she was in the air as the Demon lifted her and laid her on the bed. His lips crashed against hers and she could taste cinnamon and vanilla as he blew into her mouth, forcing her to take a deep breath.

He pulled back and smoothed down her hair gently as she looked at him in shock. "There... That's better... just breathe...." He said in a gentle soothing tone. "It's ok... your safe now... Shhhhhhhhh..... I won't let them hurt you."

Robin wanted to scream at him that she was far from safe with him. She wanted to yell at him to get away, wanted to hit scratch and bite until she was free. She wanted to beg for her life. Would it matter if she did? It couldn't hurt to try. "P-please... Mr demon..." She began but a look of confusion crossed his handsome face only to be quickly replaced with a dark storm of anger.

"You don't get to call me that." He half growled as he pushed off the bed and began to pace looking more like a caged beast than a man. She whimpered in fear as she desperately tried to find a way out of the situation she had gotten herself into.

"Please... Take me back to the human city..... I won't tell anyone where you are... Please.... I can..... I can pay you.... I have...." She looked around for anything of value he might want. "This..... This ring..." She removed her engagement ring, a massive three carrot diamond, and held it out to him. He stopped pacing and moved closer to take the ring from her. "Pretty right....." She said trying to sound as if she wasn't about to cry. "You know what that is right... It's a diamond... They're super rare and worth a lot of money..... You..... You can keep it..... And... When we get to the human city... You can take my necklace earrings and bracelet....atched set with the ring..... You can give them to..." She stopped as he snorted.

"Yes I know what diamonds are. Do you?" He asked suddenly as he looked her. He reached into his belt pouch and pulled out several transparent rocks and held them so she could see. "We carry real diamonds to give to the little kids when they do something good. Not much but positive reinforcement and all. But this..." He held up the ring for her to see. "This is cubiczercona. It's fake. I can get fifty of them for five bucks in the market. Where'd you get it?"

"That's my engagement ring...." Robin whimpered softly. Erl had told her it was real. The demon snorted and tossed the ring aside as if it was worthless. Robin supposed it was.

"fuck your cheap. See if I want a girl to stick around for just a few days I go get her an uncut ammythest or sapphire." He said with a smirk. "He could have put a lot more effort into it is all I'm saying." He shrugged and went to the door as a soft knock sounded. He opened the door to a pretty woman with a small girl at her side of about three or four. The demon smiled down at the girl who was sucking on her thumb. "Hello there little Lori. Are you helping your mom today?"

The little girl smiled shyly and nodded, making Robins heart ache. Her child would never be an adorable toddler toddling along at her side as she went about her daily tasks. Would never smile a shy smile. Her baby was gone. She sniffled and swiped at the years that were starting to run down her cheeks as she looked away from where the Demon was holding out a light pink diamond to the little girl.

The woman carefully placed a stack of neatly folded clothes on the bed next to her and scampered away calling to Loti as she went. Loti smiled at the demon and mumbled a polite thank you before following her mother. Robin wanted desperately to beg the child to stay just a little longer and opened her mouth to do so but the words caught in her throat like shattered glass as the demon shut the door behind them.

He turned with a gentle, almost longing smile still lingering on his face and froze when he saw her reaching out and trying to breathe as tears streamed down her cheeks. His smile was instantly replaced by a look of what could only be described as pitying concern. He cussed under his breath and rushed to wrap his strong arms around her.

It was strangely comforting. Robin couldn't understand why he seemed so different from what she thought she knew of him. She had been told her whole life that the Demon was a soulless psychopath that slaughtered humans for the pure amusement of it. But so far he had not raised a hand to harm her. She sat there making a strange strangled gasping noise until finally she broke. She wailed uncontrollably as she clung to his arm while he made soothing noises and apologized repeatedly in that same gentle tone.
