Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: Wasteland

"Can't see it?"

Yu Jin frowned slightly, but soon relaxed again.

"Makes sense—after all, we're already Tier Five Evolvers. Not being able to view info about this Level 1 skill is pretty reasonable."

"Just don't know how to level up this 'Eye of Insight.' The system doesn't even give a hint..."

"If I can only see Tier One info, then this is kind of a chicken rib."

Yu Jin muttered, putting away his thoughts.

His eyes landed once again on the translucent panel in front of him.

"Last shot, give me something spicy!"

Yu Jin vaguely understood the pattern of the Points Mall: the further back the items, the higher the value.

[Resource: The inheritance left by a certain Tier Six Powerful Being]

[Price: 200,000 Points]

[Evaluation: Upon activation, there is a chance to obtain the resources, abilities, attributes, memory, etc. the Tier Six Powerful Being possessed in life, but there's also a chance you'll get nothing at all.]

[Note: Can only be opened after Tier Six.]

Oh damn!

Yu Jin was shocked.

This is spicy all right—a spicy item that costs a whopping 200,000 Points!

But...

"This description looks just like opening a loot box, doesn't it?"

"How much you get depends on if you're lucky or not?"

Yu Jin frowned.

200,000 Points is not a small number.

His current 500,000 Points were basically all farmed from the 'Zoo' instance.

Based on the system's stinginess, you can't trigger rewards from repeat actions. Trying to find another farming instance like 'Zoo' is not so simple.

So, got to be cautious!

If luck is bad and you're too unlucky, that's 200,000 Points down the drain.

Yu Jin fell into thought.

After a moment, he made a decision.

"No rush, anyway there's still a dozen hours until the next refresh."

"I'll wait until today's Sewage River event is over, see what the haul is like. If I get a bunch more Points, it won't be too late to pull the trigger!"

Scavenging done for the day, Yu Jin turned to glance at Old Cui and the others, finding them still wearing their helmets with no sign of waking up.

If Yu Jin's Perception wasn't sharp enough to hear their steady breathing from a distance, he'd have thought something happened to the three of them.

"Is 'Wasteland' really that addictive?"

Looking at them, Yu Jin also felt a little tempted inside.

If the circumstances allowed, he honestly really wanted to log into 'Wasteland' too and see for himself what the real Wasteland World was like.

Sadly…

Because of the system conflict, he can only hole up on campus for now: feed stray cats, pick up litter, claim rewards and grind levels, stuff like that.

There were still more than two hours until the scheduled club activity. Yu Jin didn't hurry to the activity room, nor did he use these two hours to catch up on sleep.

Thinking for a bit, he opened up his computer and searched the keywords 'Wasteland game' online.

A 'click' as he hit Enter.

One eye-catching webpage headline after another popped into Yu Jin's view.

[The game 'Wasteland' is sweeping the globe—countless players are going crazy for it!]

[In-depth look at the creators of 'Wasteland': the mysterious new 'X' Company!]

[Wasteland's game helmet worth its weight in gold, developer only ships them at random—no official sales channel ever opened?]

[Shocking! Top-tier billionaires offering seven figures for a 'Wasteland' helmet!]

[A rational discussion: Is 'Wasteland', a game beyond Blue Star's level of technology, actually an alien product?]

Yu Jin's attention landed on the last title. He clicked and entered.

The next second—

Thousands of discussion threads popped up.

"Hahaha, it's the 21st century and people still believe this?"

"OP, the first thing you need to do is uninstall that damn tomato app from your phone!"

"The realism of 'Wasteland' is all just what so-called 'players' say. I personally think the production value is top-notch, but no way is it actually 'indistinguishable from reality'!"

"Real? It's real, for sure! I watched K-Dog's livestream—dude's stream got yanked and he got sent straight to the shadow realm!"

"If the sky really falls, there's someone tall to take the hit! If it truly were alien tech, would it be the likes of us making 3K a month who'd be figuring it out? You think the national leaders are just sitting around eating and doing nothing?"

"..."

Yu Jin scrolled with his mouse, scanning the comments.

The majority clearly did not think the game had anything to do with 'aliens'.

The handful who supported the OP, or actually believed it, were all mocked or ridiculed by others.

Obviously.

With such advanced technology, people nowadays were even more self-assured about how 'smart' they were.

People would rather trust their own common sense, and reflexively dismiss any outlandish theory.

Yu Jin wasn't surprised.

He kept scrolling, looking for more info about 'Wasteland.'

It didn't take long.

Yu Jin did find a few self-proclaimed 'players' posting.

"I'm inside 'Wasteland,' spawned as a refugee!"

"Just logged in, and damn, got killed by a giant rat right away!"

"Respawned after death, but the refresh point never changes—fought the whole night and got whacked by the rat 73 goddamn times!"

"Anyone know how the hell to break out of this?"

"Waiting online for help, urgent!"

"I'm in 'Wasteland,' and I've seen Superman!"

"Thought it was just a plain old post-apocalypse survival world, didn't expect there'd be Superpower Users!"

"I saw him fly right over my head with my own eyes!"

"Damn, that's sick as hell!"

"Please, game devs, open up a top-up channel—I want to whale, I need to FLY!"

"I'm in 'Wasteland,' and I spawned as a slave!"

"Damn it, after trekking a dozen miles to find a Refuge City…"

"I got hauled out to the wild and forced to dig for Pollution Crystals!"

"No way a real player can stay oppressed for long!"

"Anyone near 'Bright City'? Let's team up and overthrow the City Lord together!"

'Wasteland' has only been out for three days since it popped up out of nowhere.

Obviously.

For these lucky new helmet owners, their exploration in the game is still very much in the 'pioneering' phase.

Yu Jin read different posts for a while and noticed almost no players had managed to awaken and become Evolvers so far.

Even those who had evolved were only just at Tier One.

Like this post Yu Jin was reading now—

"Damn!"

"I awakened the 'Electric Current' attribute and confidently went out to grind, only to be blocked by a giant dung beetle!"

"Someone tell me, why can a dung beetle be this big? And this strong?"

"I electrocuted it, but it just tickled!"

"Worst part is, it latched onto me and won't let me leave!"

"It just wants me to keep electrocuting it. When I get tired, it lets me rest, then wants more electricity!"

"I came to Wasteland to be the Thunder God, how come I turned into an electrotherapy technician!?"

Yu Jin couldn't stop laughing after reading that.

He glanced at the username of the poster.

The poster—

Brother Gang!
