Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 – The Making of a Billionaire

The small house was warm, a stark contrast to the bitter nights Lance and Maria had endured on the streets. Snow drifted past the windows, but inside, the fire crackled, filling the room with a golden glow. For the first time in years, Lance allowed himself to breathe. He wasn't safe yet—not fully—but here, he could plan, learn, and grow.

Mr. Alexander, the elderly man who had taken them in, was strict but kind. He believed in discipline, education, and the power of knowledge. Every day, Lance studied business, finance, strategy, and human psychology under his watchful eye, while Maria learned manners, language, and the little joys of life she had missed.

"You have a sharp mind, Lance," Mr. Alexander said one evening, leaning back in his chair, pipe in hand. "But intelligence alone won't save you. Power comes from control, patience, and understanding people better than they understand themselves. Never forget that."

Lance nodded, absorbing every word like a sponge. His young mind was already calculating, analyzing, planning. He studied the world around him, learning not just from books but from observation—watching how people bent to power, how the wealthy commanded loyalty, and how weakness was punished.

Maria watched him sometimes, her admiration mixed with worry. "Lance… do you think we'll ever go back?" she asked quietly one night, as they huddled by the fire.

"Back?" Lance echoed, eyes narrowing. "Do you mean… to them? To Father and your stepmother?"

She nodded. "I mean… home. Our old home."

Lance's jaw tightened. A bitter laugh escaped him. "Home? That place isn't home. They threw us out like we were nothing. No… one day, we'll go back—but it won't be to return. It'll be to claim what they took from us… and more."

Maria shivered at the intensity in his eyes, sensing the fire that had begun to burn in him—a fire that would one day shape everything.

Years passed. Lance grew taller, stronger, sharper. He mastered not only academics but the subtle art of reading people, predicting their moves, and bending situations to his advantage. Maria stayed by his side, loyal and trusting, often marveling at how the boy who had once protected her on Christmas night had become a young man full of determination and confidence.

Mr. Alexander continued to mentor them, sharing stories of business empires, strategies, and secrets of the wealthy. "Learn everything you can," he told Lance one morning. "Money can open doors, but knowledge and influence will make you unstoppable. And remember this… power is never given freely—it is taken."

Lance's lips curved into a determined smile. "I understand," he said softly. "And I'll take what's mine… when the time comes."

By the time Lance was nineteen, he had already begun making small investments, understanding markets, and building a network. Every lesson from Mr. Alexander was a stepping stone toward the empire he would one day create. Maria, always close behind him, was both his confidante and his anchor—the one connection to the innocence of their past that he could never let go of.

But in the quiet moments, when he thought no one was watching, Lance would stare at the horizon beyond the small town they lived in. He remembered the Blackwood estate, the cruelty of his stepmother, the abandonment, and the betrayal. And every time, his resolve strengthened.

One day… one day, I'll return. And when I do, they'll know the meaning of fear. Not just for me—but for Maria, for what they took from us.

And so, under the guidance of a wise old mentor, Lance began his transformation—from a boy cast out on a cold Christmas night to a young man poised to become a billionaire with a plan for revenge. The fire that had started years ago burned brighter than ever, and nothing could extinguish it.
