Chapter 19 - SHANGHAI2020-19-7+7days

Where we lived was fairly decent, about 230 square meters. Less than ten minutes after they left, two other healthcare workers in PPE came up, installed a sensor on the back door, disabled the elevator buttons, and demanded I quarantine at home, reporting my temperature twice daily. Takeout had resumed by then. I called the sub-district office; they said ordering takeout was fine. But when I ordered, the guards downstairs refused to bring it up, saying it wasn't their obligation, and I couldn't go down to get it. I asked if the compound security could bring it up. Also no. I was furious. I called 12345, the Epidemic Prevention Office, the sub-district office in turn – almost called the Hong Kong Government's Shanghai office.

Soon, the compound property management called, saying a security guard in PPE would bring the takeout up shortly.

A false alarm! Meanwhile, my wife and son were treated quite well there, with four dishes and a soup for every meal, plus milk and snacks. They both gained weight. I, alone, felt mentally drained every day, constantly on calls and video chats…

After 7+7 days, I went to pick them up. They seemed a bit dazed, but thankfully everything went smoothly.
