Adrian closed his eyes.
He would rather she had left with flair because she liked Jasper Grant and didn't like him; at least then, her wishes would be granted, and at least she'd spend their time apart happy.
A sharp, stabbing pain slammed mercilessly into Adrian's heart. He clenched his fists, veins swelling on the backs of his hands, the rage in his bones surfacing, heavy and unmistakable.
If Serena had been just a little more observant, she would surely have noticed his wild, pounding pulse and trembling fingertips.
But Adrian held her tightly in his arms, his head buried into her shoulder. Serena couldn't move at all.
This time, his heartbreak reached an unbearable peak; he hated himself for it.
If he had noticed something was wrong with her earlier, if he hadn't let jealousy make him say those awful things that night, if he hadn't pushed her away when she reached out to hold him…
No. He couldn't have done differently either.
