Chapter 26 - Proving the Fairy Type to the Grandparents

Grandpa Chen narrowed his eyes at his grandson.

"Then tell Grandpa," he said slowly, "what else have you 'casually researched'?"

Chen Shi raised a finger.

"Oh, Mega Evolution.

Didn't I already show that to you?"

Grandpa froze.

Right. That had happened. It was so absurdly groundbreaking that his mind refused to file it under "casual research." Even now, the memory made his heart twitch.

"And? Anything else?"

Chen Shi scratched his cheek.

"Well… since we're not hiding things anymore… there's also… a brand-new Pokémon type."

"Oh, just a new—"

Grandpa nodded automatically…

And one second later—

"WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY!?"

He lurched so hard Chen Shi had to grab him to keep him from tipping over a table.

"Easy! Careful!" Chen Shi cried. "We just replaced that pot!"

Grandma's hands trembled so much she nearly dropped her teacup.

"Shi'er… child… you cannot joke about something like this." her voice quivered.

"A new typing… that is a world-shaking discovery. You aren't lying to Grandma, right?"

Chen Shi puffed up.

"How could I lie? My name literally means 'honest.' …Well, almost."

Both elders ignored the joke.

Grandpa clasped Chen Shi's hands tightly.

"How did you discover it? Do you have proof? Show me!"

"Of course I do." Chen Shi said.

"Togetic and Florges — both are the new type."

He took a breath and explained:

"When I was traveling, I invented a new type of energy cube. Florges and Togepi loved it, so I kept feeding it to them. Later I noticed a strange energy forming inside them. Then they started learning moves I'd never seen in the old type charts."

"After months of tests, I confirmed it's a completely new attribute."

"I call it… the Fairy Type."

Silence crashed over the room.

Grandpa and Grandma stared as if Chen Shi had just told them he casually built a second moon.

Grandpa forced himself to speak.

"Wait… then does this new type only appear if they eat that cube? Is that why no one found it earlier?"

Chen Shi shook his head.

"No. The cube didn't create the type.

It only helped awakening it."

He leaned forward.

"Let me ask you something, Grandpa.

What would happen if one day all Ghost-type aura vanished from the world?"

Grandpa's expression turned grave.

"…Ghost-types wouldn't be able to absorb Ghost energy anymore.

Over time, they'd lose the ability to use Ghost moves.

Eventually… the Ghost type itself would fade."

"Exactly."

Chen Shi snapped his fingers.

"Fairy-type energy vanished from the world long ago.

That's why Fairy Pokémon were misclassified."

"But now—Fairy-type energy is returning."

"I happened to create a Fairy-aligned cube during that time, so Florges and Togepi awakened early."

Grandma's breath hitched.

"Returning…? You mean it was gone for centuries?"

Chen Shi nodded.

"Long story. But the important part is—this is a global change.

If I hadn't discovered it, someone else would have within months."

Grandpa staggered back into his chair.

"…Show me. I want to see Fairy energy with my own eyes."

Chen Shi expected that much.

He guided them outside to Florges' garden.

"Florges," he called gently, "please gather some Fairy energy for Grandpa and Grandma."

"Flaa~"

Florges raised her hands.

A soft violet-pink glow blossomed from her palms, sparkling like living moonlight. The air rippled as tiny shimmering motes drifted upward, gentle but impossibly foreign — nothing like the Grass-type aura she once wielded.

Grandpa's eyes widened.

Grandma covered her mouth in shock.

"This… this isn't Grass… not Psychic… not any of the known eighteen types," Grandma whispered.

Grandpa's voice shook.

"…A new type.

A truly new type."

He turned to Chen Shi.

And for the first time in years, his voice sounded small.

"Shi'er… this isn't talent."

He swallowed.

"This is an act of nature.

You're… an anomaly."

Chen Shi rubbed his nose.

"Well, good anomalies run in the family."

Grandma nearly fainted.
