Chapter 392 - Chapter 392 - The Hunters and the Hunted

Location: The Crucible Grounds - Arena Floor

Time: Present Day - Tournament Finals

The arena fell into a stunned silence as Chloe Halvern's true face was revealed. The crowd's murmurs rose and fell like waves, their voices a chaotic symphony of shock, confusion, and speculation. The holographic banners flickered above, casting long shadows across the cracked arena floor.

Chloe's hands shot up, her fingers clawing at Grace's grip. Her voice carried a note of sharp accusation.

"Did he put you up to this?!"

Grace's expression remained unchanged, her silence a wall that Chloe's words could not breach. Her gaze was steady, unblinking, her hands still holding Chloe's arms in a gentle but unbreakable grip.

The crowd's debate was immediate—a chaotic chorus of divided opinions.

"Is the contest still on? Who won?!"

"Cassia Ulfric! She's the favorite—she has to have won!"

"Are you kidding? Grace Barlow just revealed her true identity! That's a major victory!"

"I don't care who won—this is insane! A Halvern was hiding in this tournament the whole time!"

A man in the crowd shook his head slowly. "I don't know who won, but I know one thing—this is going to be all over Vidflash by morning."

---

The tension in the arena shifted. Figures began to move through the crowd—men and women in dark, nondescript clothing, their movements deliberate and professional. They spread out, surrounding the arena floor, their eyes scanning the crowd with cold precision.

One spectator's voice carried a note of genuine confusion. "What the heck is going on right now? Who are these guys?"

Another spectator's eyes widened with recognition. "They're the Office of Special Investigations! I heard about them during those Azaqor murders in Crestwood. But I didn't think they'd suddenly show up here."

A third spectator's voice dropped to a fearful whisper. "More importantly... just why are they here?"

The crowd's murmurs grew louder, their voices carrying a note of rising unease.

---

A middle-aged man stepped forward from the crowd, his posture one of cold authority. He wore the crisp, dark attire of the Investigate and Capture Taskforce—a newly formed division under Chief Sarah. His name was Slate, and he walked like a man who owned the room.

Behind him, four figures followed in perfect synchronization. Their movements were mechanical, deliberate, their eyes scanning the crowd with cold precision. They were the taskforce—the hunters sent to capture the most wanted man in Crestwood.

A spectator pointed at Slate, his voice carrying a note of recognition. "That's Slate! The former police chief! I thought he was ousted after the Azaqor scandal!"

Another spectator shook his head. "He's back. And he's with the taskforce. This can't be good."

---

One of the taskforce members raised a hand, his fingers forming a gesture that was unmistakable—a sniper's signal. His gaze was fixed on the arena floor, his eyes scanning the faces of Chloe and Grace.

The tension in the air was palpable. The crowd held their breath, their bodies frozen in anticipation.

The sniper's gaze shifted. The majority of the attention was now directed at Grace.

Michael Snovidenie's voice carried a note of cold indignation. "Quantum Flow Adept, they are clearly not putting you in their eyes with their insolent behaviors. It's an affront to your prestige. Shall I—"

His hand raised, a gesture of power. The air around him began to shimmer with dark, ink-like energy—waves of force that pulsed with barely contained fury. The ground beneath his feet trembled, and the air grew thick with pressure.

Brenda's voice cut through the tension, calm and measured. "There's no need to lower yourself to such minor squabbles, child. The territory I occupy is not one they can touch. Let them play their games."

Michael's expression shifted to one of surprise. "Don't tell me, Quantum Flow Adept, that this backward surface field city has someone who can be in the same caliber as yourself?"

Brenda's lips curved into a thin smile. "Not just one. Several, if not many."

Michael's eyes widened. "Why haven't I heard any word of this?"

Brenda's voice carried a note of quiet amusement. "They probably no longer concern themselves with mundane affairs. But this deviant's sudden appearance has changed everything. The entire structure of the Sutrans is currently in upheaval due to this one man. It's like a tipping point of balance."

Michael's brow furrowed. "Just what's so special about this guy?"

Brenda's voice dropped to a whisper. "Not the individual in question—that's the wrong talking point. The power he acquired was once the symbol of a very powerful Asurim who lived a hundred thousand years ago. That's what's up for grabs."

Michael's expression shifted to one of dawning understanding. "Meaning... they are after that power."

Brenda's voice carried a note of agreement. "Exactly."

---

Slate's voice cut through the tension like a blade, sharp and commanding.

"Well, this sh*tty charade has gone on long enough."

His hand raised, pointing at the arena floor. His voice carried a note of cold fury.

"Elijah F*cking Marcus! We are aware you are in here! So we don't have all day—bring your ass out here!"

His hand moved in a sweeping gesture, his body language one of absolute authority. The taskforce members behind him shifted, their hands moving to their weapons.

The crowd's reaction was immediate—a mixture of gasps, stuttered words, and fearful murmurs.

"Elijah Marcus?! He's here?!"

"The Azaqor suspect?! I thought he was on the run!"

"This is insane! What's he doing in a tournament?!"

"Wait, you mean the guy who murdered all those traffickers?!"

Another spectator's voice carried a note of disbelief. "I heard he was dead! That the Halverns had him killed!"

A third spectator shook his head. "Apparently not. If Slate is here, that means they have a lead. And they're not messing around."

---

The crowd's energy shifted, their voices rising in a chaotic symphony of fear and speculation. Hands raised, bodies pressed back against seats, eyes darting nervously toward the exits.

"Did he just say Elijah Marcus?!"

"He's here?! The Azaqor killer?!"

"Wait, wait, wait—isn't he supposed to be dead?!"

"I don't know, but if Slate is here, that means they're serious. They wouldn't be here otherwise."

"I can't believe this. I just wanted to watch a fight. Now I'm caught in the middle of a manhunt!"

---

Grace's gaze shifted to Slate, her expression unreadable. Her hand remained on Chloe's arm, her grip firm but gentle.

Chloe's voice carried a note of sharp accusation. "You knew this was going to happen. That's why you were so calm. You knew they were coming."

Grace's silence was her only response.

Slate's voice carried a note of cold triumph. "I know you're here, Marcus! You can't hide forever! We have the entire arena surrounded. There's no way out!"

---

The arena fell into a heavy silence. The crowd's murmurs faded, replaced by a tense, expectant stillness. The taskforce members stood motionless, their eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of movement.

Slate's gaze swept the arena, his voice carrying a note of cold command.

"Show yourself, Marcus! Or I'll start dragging people out one by one!"

The crowd's fear was palpable—a living thing that seemed to press down on them like a physical weight.

Grace's gaze remained fixed on Slate, her expression unreadable.
