Chapter 130 - The First Contact

The True Void was not empty. It was filled with the "Debris of Deletion" vast clouds of unformatted data that drifted like cosmic icebergs. But the spark Kenji had spotted wasn't debris. It was a rhythmic, intentional pulse.

[LOCATION: THE TRUE VOID - SECTOR NULL-ALPHA]

[STATUS: NAVIGATING BY INTERNAL SOUL-CLOCK]

[NOTICE: SECONDARY 'SOURCE-DRIVE' DETECTED]

"It's small," Mateo reported, his hands steady on the new Soul-Link crystals. "About the size of a single 'Gutter-Sector.' It's running on a very primitive 'Kinetic-Engine.' They aren't using World-Steam; they're using... clockwork?"

"Bring us alongside," Kenji commanded. He gripped the Independent Variable, the weight of the sledge-wrench feeling right in his calloused hands.

The Archive closed the distance. The other reality looked like a massive, glass sphere encased in a rusted iron cage. Inside the sphere was a Victorian-style city, perpetually shrouded in fog and lit by gaslamps. Massive brass gears on the exterior of the sphere ground against the void, creating sparks of "Friction-Energy" just to keep the lights on.

"It's a 'Steampunk' shard," Elara said. "The Firm used to use those for 'Historical Drama' simulations."

[COMMUNICATION INITIATED: ANALOG FREQUENCY]

"...identify yourself..." a voice crackled through the Archive's hull. It was tired, ancient, and sounded like the grinding of gears. "...are you another 'Eraser'? Or are you a 'Drifter'?"

"We're the Unranked Alliance," Kenji spoke, his voice projected by the System-Kenji aurora. "We just un-plugged from the Great Archive. We're looking for... neighbors."

There was a long silence. Then, a hatch on the iron cage opened. A man in a tattered coat and a heavy diving helmet floated out, tethered by a brass chain. He waved a mechanical lantern.

"If you've truly un-plugged, then you're already dead," the man's voice echoed. "The Librarians don't leave 'Un-Leased' assets in the Void for long. They have 'Hounds' for the drifters."

"Hounds?" Kenji asked.

[WARNING: EXTERNAL DISTURBANCE DETECTED]

[TYPE: PREDATORY_ALGORITHM]

From the "Static" behind the iron sphere, three shapes emerged. They weren't cubes or spheres. They were sleek, multi-limbed horrors made of "Black-Glass," moving with the jerky, unnatural speed of a lagging video. They didn't have faces, only "Search-Lights" that emitted a beam of "Deletion-Code."

[TARGET IDENTIFIED: THE ARCHIVE_HOUNDS]

[FUNCTION: RECOVERY_OR_ERASURE OF UN-LEASED DATA]

"The Librarians want their brass back," the man in the diving helmet signaled frantically. "Hide your signal! If they 'Scan' your Source-Drive, they'll lock your coordinates!"

"I don't hide," Kenji said, his white eyes flaring.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE KINETIC_RE-WRITE]

Kenji leaped from the Archive. In the True Void, there was no air to carry sound, but as he swung the Independent Variable, the void itself groaned. He didn't use mana. He used the "Standard Physics" he had just invented.

He struck the lead Hound.

CRUNCH.

The sledge-wrench didn't just break the glass; it Displaced it. Because Kenji was now a "Standalone Reality," his hammer carried its own "Rules." He had defined the Independent Variable as "Unbreakable," and the Hound's "Deletion-Code" as "Inert."

The Hound shattered into a million "Broken Links."

"Mateo! Aim the ship's prow at the second one!" Kenji yelled. "Priya, Elara—don't use spells! Use 'Physical Intent'! If you think it's cold, it is cold!"

The crew of the Archive realized the secret of the True Void: without a central System to enforce the laws of nature, the person with the strongest "Will to Define" wins.

Elara didn't cast a frost-spell; she simply decided that the second Hound was a statue. It froze instantly, its black-glass limbs locking in mid-air.

Kenji landed on the third Hound's back, driving the wrench into its "Core-Processor." He didn't delete the data he Scrambled it, turning the Hound into a harmless cloud of "Random Noise."

The man in the diving helmet watched in total shock. His lantern flickered. "You... you're not just drifters. You're 'Source-Architects'."

"We're just mechanics," Kenji said, floating back to the Archive. "But we're looking to build a 'Neighborhood' out here. You want to link up?"

"Link up?" the man asked. "To what?"

"To the Independent Network," Kenji said, looking at his new tool. "The Great Archive thinks we're garbage. Let's show them what happens when the garbage starts building its own Foundation."
