Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Acquiring Skills

"System, open"

He spoke, and a second later, a blue screen opened.

Welcome, **** Keido, to your personalized system. As you know, you've been sent here, to the world of The Ten Disasters! You must've already guessed what this means, yes? It means you have to help save the world from ruin! You can do anything else you want, however, the main task is saving the world.

Rule 1: You cannot tell anyone about the system

Rule 2: You must gather allies, specifically the Hero of this world, Kang Kimsung, and conquer all ten disasters, or influence the effort behind it.

Rule 3: Get a woman, you virgin, you're already 22, so you are expected to have a lover or lovers during the ten years of this quest.

Rule 4: Respect the Gods. They are always watching you and your sister, so make it interesting as often as you can.

Thank you for being fated to help the world, and we wish you good luck.

(P.S. I didn't write Rule 3; I was specifically told to include it.

-Gabriel, Messenger of Yahweh

'What the fuck?'

Keido asked himself, expecting anything but what he just read. But what surprised him the most was that Archangel Gabriel personally wrote the message. Keido wasn't exactly a religious person. A vast majority of South Koreans aren't either. However, he at least knew from both his own knowledge and from the novel that Gabriel was from Christian and Islamic mythology, acting as God's messenger. He never expected that someone so high up the ladder would personally write to him, but he guessed it must have been because the gods themselves are the reason why he is in this situation.

"Hey, Heidi?"

He asked his sister, who was still standing quietly in his arms.

"Can you try opening your system? I think you also got a message for you."

She looks up at him, confused for a second, before her eyes widen, the realization dawning on her.

"System?"

She asks, and the same blue screen pops up, and Keido realizes he can also see her own screen, which had a similar message he had been given before from Gabriel. He sighed in relief and took another look at his system. It now had a full list of his stats, strengths, and weaknesses, all in a clear order. It even gave him pointers to fix those weaknesses.

"Hey, Heidi, does your system also have a stat list?"

He asks her while scrolling through the list. She looks up from hers, nodding, before checking it out herself. The two part, and sit down on the couch again, both of them silently reading through every bit of information in their system. Keido notices that at the bottom, it offers a lottery for which skill he'll have during the disasters. His lips spread into a smile before turning to Heidi, who also saw the lottery.

"Should we draw now?"

He asks, a bit nervous, but mostly excited to know what his skill will be. Skills, as one could guess, came in a wide variety. Some were more straightforward, serving a single purpose, while others were more vague and were much more versatile in use if given to the right person, that is. It also heavily matters to the person who receives the skill, like Achilles.

In the novel, it was told directly from both Shadow Samurai Jamal and the Lord of the Depths Armando that Achilles' skill was supposed to be a defensive-type, yet somehow managed to dominate in every battle with it. Someone like him could probably exert a skill's full potential, no matter what it could do.

"Let's do it. Let's roll for our skills."

He says, bringing his finger to the lottery button, and Heidi did the same, pressing it at the same time. The two were waiting in anticipation as a wheel rolled, with billions of lines in it, probably all of the lines being different skills.

'Please be support-type, please be support-type..'

Both of them prayed for a support-type skill, since it would do them well in the long run if both of them had that type. After a minute of waiting, their respective wheels stopped, and they looked at the rewards.

Congratulations, **** Keido, you've received [Feelings Of All]. This skill cannot be evolved. This skill allows one to turn emotions and feelings into animal forms, allowing them to be used in combat or more discreet ways. We wish you good luck with this skill!

Congratulations, **** Heidi, you've received [Drug Store]. This skill can be evolved later on into [Chemical Makeup, once evolution requirements have been met. This skill, in a general description, gives you the ability to use alchemy and make drugs from the corresponding materials needed to craft them. This skill can be used in a wide variety of ways, from anti-monster repellants to healing medicines. We wish you good luck with this skill!

Both of them stare at their screens, realizing at the same time that these are specifically the skills they both would have wanted if they were ever put in such a situation.

"Heidi?"

He asks, wondering if she also got a personalized skill.

"Yeah… I also got a skill I wanted."

The two look at their screens, both of them surprised that they got exactly what they wanted. Typically, the main character would be given some skill related to death, or something like that. However, Heidi noticed another wheel just below; this time, it was for what rank their skills would be. The ranks were divided into ten categories, for many things, from the common F rank, all the way to the godly Z rank. For skills, it was the guaranteed level a person could reach with that skill rank. For items, it was their worth and power.

For both people and monsters, each rank, from F to Z, was usually ten times stronger than the last. Ten F ranks could kill an E rank, ten E ranks could kill a D rank, ten D ranks could kill a C rank, ten C ranks could kill a B rank, and the same applied for A rank, S rank, SS rank, SSS rank, and finally, Z rank. However, the chances of getting a Z rank were 0.5% out of 100%. The SSS to A-ranked skills had chances of 1.5%, 3%, 5%, and 10%. From B to D rank, it was a 15% chance each, and for the last two, E and F, it was a combined 35%. This made the chances of getting a good rank for their skills very low, but she wanted to try anyway.

"Keido, there's another wheel… It's for our skills ranks."

Keido looked at the wheel as well, worry and apprehension on his face.

"We might as well try, right?"

He asks, tapping the circle and watching it spin, Heidi, doing the same. They watched as the wheels spun for what seemed like an hour before both of them, by some divine act, landed on Z rank. Their eyes widened in surprise and joy, having gotten the rarest rank to receive for a skill.

"Did it actually…"

Heidi begins to say, staring at her screen incredulously, not believing how lucky they'd gotten with the draw. Keido was in a similar state, but quickly accepted it. Instead of questioning his luck, he simply wrote it off as Main Character luck, that damned thing. In fact, he wasn't happy much, because if he knew anything about novels, it was that those with great luck in powers always got put into shitty situations that either reminded them of their weakness, left them traumatized, or forced them to struggle.

If anything, this luck in a draw was a bad thing; it was sort of an omen that they would be put through one terrible trial after another, just to balance out their good fortune.

"Ah... I just knew something like this would happen. The universe needs balance one way or another..."

He sighs tiredly, dreading the future and how much bullshit he'll have to deal with, all because he was just a bit horny about the female characters. What an unfortunate soul.
