Chapter 104 - Chapter 104: The Third Step

[7]What are the hereditary strongest techniques of the Three Great Clans of the jujutsu world? (Multiple choice)

A. Limitless.

B. Ten Shadows Technique.

C. Blood Manipulation.

D. Projection Sorcery.

Getou Suguru finally let out a breath of relief. "Two points for each multiple-choice question—at last, a freebie."

They had studied the Three Great Families extensively in the textbooks at Tokyo Jujutsu High. The correct answers were—A, B, and C.

Getou Suguru frowned in confusion. "Then what exactly is this 'Projection Sorcery' that's been included here?"

Ieiri Shoko knew a bit more than he did. "I've heard it's the innate technique of the current head of the Zen'in family. That Zen'in clan head, already sixty-nine years old, is hailed as the modern era's 'strongest first-grade jujutsu sorcerer.'"

Gojo Satoru didn't take the technique seriously at all. "It's nothing special."

Getou Suguru: "..."

Getou Suguru sighed. "Satoru, don't underestimate Akiya's exam questions. There's definitely deeper meaning behind them."

Gojo Satoru shrugged. "Fine. Then I'll tell you. Zen'in Naobito and Zen'in Naoya share the same technique. It's a relatively modern technique that only emerged in recent times. It's lethal to you guys—but it's a technique that's perfectly countered by me."

After relying on his own knowledge to answer the question, Gojo Satoru felt a strong sense of accomplishment. His smug grin, however, froze solid the moment he laid eyes on the next question.

[8]Five hundred years ago, a major incident occurred in the jujutsu world: a duel before the shogun, in which the "Six Eyes" and the "Ten Shadows Technique" perished together. What was the reason for their mutual destruction? (Multiple choice)

A. The tangled love and hatred between the Gojo and Zen'in families.

B. Carelessness on both sides.

C. The battle spiraled out of control.

D. Failure to subjugate "Mahoraga."

Gojo Satoru: "..."

Getou Suguru kicked Gojo Satoru lightly in the calf, leaving a clear footprint behind.

It's your turn to answer.

Getou Suguru added coolly, "This is your family's question, you know."

Ieiri Shoko chimed in without hesitation, "Exactly, exactly—Gojo, hurry up and write the answer."

Gojo Satoru pulled a face like a bitter melon.

This incident was a blockbuster piece of historical gossip among the Three Great Families. It wasn't strange that Asou Akiya had managed to gather such information—after all, he clearly enjoyed digging up the Three Great Families' scandals—but who would dare discuss the cause of death of a former "Six Eyes" right in front of the current one?!

Gojo Satoru spoke awkwardly, twisting a little. "I… don't actually know that much."

Gojo Satoru continued, "A is definitely fine. Love and hatred, right? As for whether there was any 'love' involved… that part's unclear."

Gojo Satoru went on, "I've never seen a living user of the 'Ten Shadows Technique,' but the old fossils back home have always believed the Gojo family was stronger than the Zen'in family. Uh—then let's add B and C as well. Both sides were careless, and the battle spiraled out of control."

When it came to option D, half of Gojo Satoru's face—hidden behind his sunglasses—displayed the kind of clear-eyed foolishness unique to a Tokyo High student.

"What's Mahoraga? You'd have to ask someone from the Zen'in family."

"..."

"..."

Getou Suguru + Ieiri Shoko: As the heir of a rival family, you are seriously unqualified!

Gojo Satoru: [A B C.]

Getou Suguru, charging in recklessly, selected everything: [A B C D.]

Ieiri Shoko followed Getou Suguru's lead: [A B C D.]

Deep within the Tombs of the Star Corridor, Tengen looked at Gojo Satoru's answer and smiled in quiet satisfaction.

Wrong.

If the previous "Six Eyes" were to learn that their successor possessed this level of historical knowledge, they would probably be left both laughing and crying at the same time.

The Zen'in family's hereditary strongest technique, the "Ten Shadows Technique," allows its wielder to manifest ten different types of shikigami from within their shadow. Among them, the tenth shikigami is the most powerful—and also the most difficult to successfully subjugate. Once released, it can slaughter enemies and allies alike, making it a weapon that the wielder of the Ten Shadows Technique treats as an ultimate trump card, a final ace reserved for desperate moments.

Its name is—

"Mahoraga."

[9]One of the essential pieces of knowledge for advanced jujutsu sorcerers: Technique Burnout. That is, a state in which a sorcerer is unable to use their innate technique. How, historically, did jujutsu sorcerers deal with technique burnout? (Multiple choice)

A. Wait for the cooldown period to pass.

B. Spend an entire day drinking with friends.

C. Use Reverse Cursed Technique to heal the brain.

D. Destroy the brain's frontal lobe, then repair the brain using Reverse Cursed Technique.

Getou Suguru asked blankly, "What exactly is technique burnout? And you can destroy your brain and still survive?"

Ieiri Shoko complained without restraint, "Why are you asking me? Who am I supposed to ask? I'm not an advanced jujutsu sorcerer—this question has nothing to do with me. I'm only getting dragged into this because of you two. Gojo, it's your turn again to put that so-called brilliance of yours to use."

Gojo Satoru: "..."

Something was very wrong here.

Since when had I become the main force responsible for answering questions?

Gojo Satoru hesitated, then said cautiously, "Techniques are located in the brain… I vaguely remember that 'technique burnout' has something to do with special-grade sorcerers."

Ieiri Shoko shot him a cold look. "So you don't remember clearly again?"

Getou Suguru frowned. "Can you even do this, Gojo?"

Gojo Satoru bared his canine teeth, instantly turning noisy and indignant. "Suguru, I'm the one in remedial classes—do the questions yourself!"

Left with no other choice, the three of them began blindly selecting answers, none of them confident that they had chosen correctly.

Gojo Satoru: [A C.]

Getou Suguru: [A B C.]

Ieiri Shoko: [B C.]

Seeing the students' answers wiped out across the board, Tengen's smile only grew broader, warm and benevolent.

The venerable senior calmly explained that this question did not concern special-grade sorcerers at all, but rather a follow-up issue related to Domain Expansion. Domain Expansion is an advanced form of barrier technique; each jujutsu sorcerer can only use it once per day, after which they enter a cooldown period.

This restriction is known as "technique burnout," and it requires a full twenty-four hours to recover.

Tengen stated, "The correct answers are A, B, and D."

When technique burnout occurs, using Reverse Cursed Technique to heal the brain is useless.

In ancient times, physicians were scarce and medical resources severely limited. Once jujutsu sorcerers mastered Reverse Cursed Technique, they were prone to losing their inhibitions, delighting in using their own bodies as experimental material. Through the trials conducted by powerful sorcerers, a rapid-response method for dealing with technique burnout was ultimately proven—

The sorcerer destroys the brain's frontal lobe, then repairs the brain, forcibly resetting the state of technique burnout and continuing to deploy Domain Expansion.

If students were to learn this information in advance, it would help eliminate hidden dangers during combat.

Of course… that is, on the premise that you can actually learn Domain Expansion.

[10]During the Heian period, the "King of Curses," Ryoumen Sukuna, ran rampant, delighting in devouring women and children—yet was still enshrined by the Emperor as a god, enjoying offerings of incense. What was the personal reason behind this?

A. He enjoyed instructing others.

B. He had a cheerful personality.

C. He was too handsome.

D. He was overwhelmingly powerful.

Getou Suguru felt a figurative vein throb at his temple. "Another two points picked up for free."

History class had clearly described Ryoumen Sukuna as having two mouths, four eyes, four arms, and twenty fingers!

Exactly where did this ferocious calamity of a being match the descriptions of extremely handsome, warm and cheerful, or eager to teach others?

Getou Suguru: [D.]

Gojo Satoru: [D.]

Ieiri Shoko: [D.]

Tengen sank into memories from the distant past—an era that predated the emergence of Ryoumen Sukuna.

"The Disgraced One (Daten)."

Ryoumen Sukuna's true name was Daten. Whether it was the title King of Curses or the name Ryoumen Sukuna, both were labels later humans attached to him—manifestations born from their fear of Daten.

"He probably didn't look bad," Tengen mused softly. "He even seemed to have a female admirer from within the imperial court."

Tengen remembered those of immense strength with striking clarity—especially a woman bold enough to pursue Ryoumen Sukuna.

Her name was… "Yorozu," wasn't it?

Back in the classroom at Tokyo Jujutsu High, the atmosphere remained as tense as ever. A history exam could never consist entirely of multiple-choice questions, and after enduring twenty-five soul-crushing, life-draining multiple-choice problems, the trio finally arrived at the fill-in-the-blank section.

[1]The annual clan assembly of the Three Great Families is held every year in [...]. During the assembly, light snow falls from the sky, blanketing the forests in white. This year, the three young clan heads of the Three Great Families met; their strength was evenly matched. One had blue eyes, one had [...], and one had black eyes. Among them, the heir of the [...] family held the highest status, followed by the heir of the [...] family, and lastly the heir of the [...] family. The meeting ended on bad terms, the atmosphere awkward and strained.

Getou Suguru filled in the blanks at lightning speed. Judging from the surrounding context, the first blank could be written as [winter]—there was no need to specify an exact date.

As for the second blank… blue eyes clearly referred to the "Six Eyes."

Getou Suguru paused and asked, "Satoru, fill-in-the-blank questions always have traps. We can't judge this based on the modern era. Hypothetically speaking, if the Gojo family's young head were you, the Zen'in family's young head possessed the 'Ten Shadows Technique,' and the Kamo family's young head wielded 'Blood Manipulation'—with all three of you being evenly matched in strength—who would hold the highest status among the Three Great Families?"

Gojo Satoru answered without the slightest hesitation, "Obviously me."

Getou Suguru: "!!!"

Ieiri Shoko clicked her tongue. "That's impressive, Gojo. Has your family spoiled the 'Six Eyes' like this since ancient times?"

Just how extreme and how unrestrained the Gojo family's favoritism toward Gojo Satoru was had now become painfully clear to his classmates through this very exam.

Getou Suguru continued, "You represent the blue eyes. Then who do the black eyes represent? What eye color should be filled into the second blank?"

Gojo Satoru replied casually, "Black eyes should refer to the Kamo family, right?"

Gojo Satoru added, "The second blank is green eyes. That's a defining trait of the Zen'in family's direct bloodline."

Without hesitation, Gojo Satoru wrote for the first fill-in-the-blank question:

"The clan assembly of the Three Great Families is held every year from [January 1st–January 3rd]. During the assembly, light snow falls from the sky, blanketing the forests in white. This year, the three young clan heads of the Three Great Families met; their strength was evenly matched—one with blue eyes, one with [green eyes], and one with black eyes. Among them, the young head of the [Gojo] family held the highest status, followed by the young head of the [Zen'in] family, and lastly the young head of the [Kamo] family. The three parted on bad terms, the atmosphere awkward."

This perfect opening to the fill-in-the-blank section left all three of them grinning from ear to ear—after all, each blank was worth two full points.

Five blanks total, ten points secured!

They now shared a single, humble wish: on a hundred-point history exam, simply passing would be enough.

[2]Every [...] years, when the time comes, Lord Tengen—who is responsible for guarding the foundational barriers of the jujutsu world—experiences irreversible physical aging. To renew the information of her flesh/body, she must merge with a girl possessing the [...] constitution. In gratitude for Lord Tengen's thousand years of contributions to the jujutsu world, the jujutsu society facilitated the birth of the [...] family, whose members serve these girls, reveal the truth to them, and ensure that they are clothed, fed, and able to live out their entire lives without want.

"This one—I know two of the blanks," Getou Suguru said, filling them in swiftly.

The first blank was [500 years], the second was [Star Plasma Vessel], while the third blank was a bit obscure.

Getou Suguru racked his brains. "Was it Kuroishi? Kuroame? Kuroda?"

Gojo Satoru—who had once been forcibly tutored in history by Getou Suguru, hand pressed firmly to his head—raised his hand. "It's Kuroi."

Without even looking up from the paper, Getou Suguru casually reached out and pinched Gojo Satoru's cheek. "Thanks for your memory."

Gojo Satoru covered his cheek, now reddened from his best friend's pinch, and glared silently.

Ieiri Shoko muttered under her breath, "Can you two DKs keep your hands to yourselves for once?"

Getou Suguru shot her a look full of disdain. "We're boys."

Forget pinching Gojo Satoru's face—once this exam was over, he was going to hang Asou Akiya up and push him on a swing!

Three blanks total, six points secured!

Without making a sound, Gojo Satoru quietly wrote down: [Kuroi].

[3]Because they can see the existence of cursed spirits, wild, unregistered jujutsu sorcerer children generally struggle to [...]. They are rejected and misunderstood by society; those with weak talent tend to die young, while those with strong talent are prone to harming others. If a jujutsu sorcerer child were to experience a rampage of cursed energy, indirectly causing the deaths of multiple jujutsu sorcerers during curse exorcisms and triggering a massive upheaval, the higher-ups would sentence this individual to [...] as punishment. In carrying out this sentence, should the executor show mercy?

Getou Suguru nearly treated this question as a reading-comprehension problem.

But it wasn't reading comprehension at all—it wasn't asking him to give an opinion on whether mercy should be shown.

A faint sense of oppression settled over Getou Suguru's chest, yet he found that he could still understand the reasoning behind the higher-ups' decision.

Getou Suguru felt a faint sense of oppression settle in his chest, yet he could still understand the decision made by the higher-ups.

Whose life wasn't a life, after all?

This was the jujutsu world, not a peaceful society governed by law. Jujutsu sorcerers lived on the very edge of death as they ran themselves ragged exorcising cursed spirits, and the one thing they could least tolerate was someone dragging them down. Why should multiple fully trained sorcerers be made to pay the price for the mistake of a single child?

If he were that child, he would have to bear the pain of having caused so many deaths for the rest of his life. There would be no one qualified to forgive him—no such person existed. In Getou Suguru's view, the first blank should be [survive], and unless there was some unforeseen twist, the second blank could only be [death penalty].

"Satoru, what do you think?" Getou Suguru asked after finishing the question.

"Personally, I think the kid wasn't at fault—just too stupid to know how to use their power—and the sorcerers who died were a bit too weak," Gojo Satoru said after a brief pause, answering with careless indifference. "But if that's what you think, then fine."

Sometimes, guilt and evil weren't divided by subjective notions of right and wrong—objective reality was simply what it was.

In Gojo Satoru's mind, encountering such a situation came down entirely to personal whim: if he felt like saving them, he would; if he felt like giving up on them, that was fine too.

The two of them copied Getou Suguru's filled-in answers, accepted his view of good and evil, and submitted the same response.

—Sentenced to [death penalty]!

Author's Note:

The third fill-in-the-blank question involves the Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 0 movie.

As a child, Okkotsu Yuta unknowingly cursed his girlfriend, who died in a traffic accident. Later, the Queen of Curses severely injured multiple classmates and high-grade jujutsu sorcerers.

In the Okkotsu Yuta incident, Brother Geto consistently stood on the opposing side and did not acknowledge or accept Okkotsu Yuta.

PS: In the original movie, multiple jujutsu sorcerers were indirectly severely injured, whereas in the exam question they were indirectly killed. Examinations and reality are not the same, and in order not to expose himself, Asou Akiya deliberately omitted the full destructive impact caused by the special-grade cursed spirit, the Queen of Curses, when setting the history exam questions.
