The heat of Mustafar rose in violent, shimmering waves as the shuttle descended through the smoke-choked sky.
What had once been a towering fortress was now nothing more than jagged ruin and scattered debris, swallowed by rivers of molten lava that pulsed like the veins of a living beast. The ground itself glowed with a dull, infernal light, cracks spreading like scars across the blackened stone. Ash drifted endlessly through the air, carried by searing winds that howled across the wasteland.
It felt as though the planet was watching.
Waiting.
Obi-Wan Kenobi stood alone at the center of it all.
His robes fluttered slightly in the heated gusts, the fabric singed at the edges. In his hand, his lightsaber burned with a steady glow—calm, controlled, unwavering. The hum of the blade was soft, almost meditative, a stark contrast to the chaos surrounding him.
Above him, the shuttle cut through the smoky sky before descending rapidly, its engines screaming against the oppressive heat. It landed with a violent gust of wind that sent ash spiraling outward in a storm, the ground trembling beneath its weight.
For a moment, there was silence.
Then—
The ramp lowered with a metallic hiss.
And from within the shadows—
He stepped out.
Darth Vader moved forward with purpose.
Each step struck the ground with a dull, echoing weight, like the beat of a war drum announcing inevitable destruction. The volcanic stone beneath his boots cracked faintly with every movement, unable to withstand the sheer presence he carried.
And then came the sound.
That mechanical breathing.
Slow.
Terrifyingly calm.
Obi-Wan's grip on his lightsaber tightened slightly as he watched him approach.
Even encased within the black armor, even burdened by the life-support systems that kept him alive—
He was fast.
Too fast.
He advanced like a force of nature given form.
And midway across the battlefield—
SNAP-HISS.
A blade of crimson erupted to life.
The red glow cut violently through the darkness, reflecting off the molten rivers and casting long, twisted shadows across the ruined land.
For a brief moment—
They stood facing one another.
Past and present.
Master and apprentice.
And then—
Vader moved.
Without warning, he leapt.
The ground beneath him shattered from the sheer force of his launch, fragments of blackened stone exploding outward as his armored form soared through the air like a descending executioner's blade.
Obi-Wan's eyes widened.
He barely raised his saber in time—
CRASH!
The impact was catastrophic.
Their blades collided with a violent explosion of light and heat, sparks bursting outward in a blinding cascade. The force of the strike drove Obi-Wan backward, his boots scraping against the ground as cracks spread beneath his feet.
He staggered—
But Vader did not stop.
There was neither a pause nor moment to recover.
The second strike came immediately, then the third—each blow heavier, faster, more relentless than the last.
The fight had begun.
And it was personal.
Obi-Wan could feel it in every movement, every strike, every ounce of pressure behind Vader's blade.
This was not about the fortress.
Not about the rebellion.
Not about the Empire.
This—
Was about him.
Vader struck again.
And again.
And again.
Each swing carried immense weight, forcing Obi-Wan to block, redirect, and step aside in rapid succession. His form remained precise but the sheer power behind Vader's attacks was overwhelming.
Their blades locked.
Close.
Sparks crackled violently between them as red pressed against blue.
And then—
Vader spoke.
So quiet that the raging winds of Mustafar could not carry his voice beyond them.
"Where… is my son?"
The words struck harder than any blow.
For a fraction of a second—
Obi-Wan faltered.
It was small.
Almost imperceptible.
But Vader felt it.
Their blades scraped violently as Vader pushed forward, the pressure increasing instantly.
"Where did you hide him?" he continued, his voice calm… controlled… lethal.
Obi-Wan broke the clash, stepping back, his breath catching in his chest.
"I don't know what you mean."
Vader's helmet tilted slightly.
There was something almost… amused… in the motion.
Then he attacked again.
Faster.
Sharper.
A surge of dark energy erupted from his outstretched hand—
Lightning.
Obi-Wan barely managed to raise his blade in time, the Force lightning colliding with the saber and splitting apart, arcs of energy exploding across the ground behind him.
The air itself screamed.
"I have been to Tatooine," Vader said as he advanced once more, his steps now slower… deliberate… certain.
Another strike.
Obi-Wan blocked—
Barely.
"I met my half-brother."
Their blades clashed again, the impact sending a jolt through Obi-Wan's arms.
"I know… I have a son."
Obi-Wan's breath hitched.
Vader stepped closer.
His voice dropped into something darker.
"Luke Skywalker."
The name echoed across the battlefield like a death sentence.
And for a fraction of a second—
Obi-Wan's defense broke.
It was all Vader needed.
A devastating strike slammed into Obi-Wan's guard, forcing him down onto one knee, the ground cracking beneath him as he struggled to hold the red blade at bay.
"I want his location," Vader said.
Their sabers locked once more.
Red pressing down on blue.
Relentless.
Unyielding.
"If you give him to me…"
A pause.
"I will let you live."
Obi-Wan gritted his teeth and pushed upward with everything he had, breaking the lock and forcing space between them.
The fight exploded into motion once again.
Lightning surged.
Obi-Wan deflected one blast—
Twisted aside from another—
A third struck the ground beside him, sending molten rock spraying into the air.
He moved quickly now, shifting tactics.
The Force answered his call.
Chunks of volcanic stone tore free from the ground, rising into the air before hurtling toward Vader in a barrage of raw, physical force.
Vader cut through them effortlessly.
One.
Two.
Three.
Each piece shattered beneath his blade.
Obi-Wan didn't stop.
He reached deeper.
Debris rose again—larger this time, denser—forming barriers between them. Walls of broken stone, pillars of ash, anything to slow Vader's advance.
It was not a Jedi's traditional defense.
But it worked.
Vader paused only to destroy.
And then—
He adapted.
Faster than Obi-Wan expected.
A single, devastating Force push erupted outward, shattering every obstacle in its path.
The barriers exploded into fragments.
And Obi-Wan was thrown backward, his body skidding across the scorched ground before he rolled and barely managed to rise in time—
Just in time to block another strike.
The pressure was unbearable now.
Each clash sent shockwaves through his arms.
Each step drained what little strength remained.
And Vader—
Vader was growing stronger.
Obi-Wan could feel it.
The rage.
The anger.
The pain.
Every second of combat fed it.
Empowered it.
Their blades collided again—
And this time—
Obi-Wan lost his footing.
He stumbled.
Vader's strike came down with brutal force.
Obi-Wan deflected it at the last possible moment, but the impact sent him sliding backward across the ground, his boots carving deep lines into the ash.
His breathing grew heavier.
His movements slower.
His arms trembled under the strain.
Vader stepped forward.
"You cannot defeat me."
The words were not a boast.
Obi-Wan knew it.
He felt it in every exchange.
Every failed counter.
Every moment he was forced back.
This was no longer Anakin Skywalker.
This is someone,
Someone forged in fire.
Someone sustained by pain.
Someone stronger.
Obi-Wan's mind raced.
If I fall…
If I'm captured…
Everything ends.
Luke.
Leia.
The New Jedi order.
The rebellion.
All of it.
He couldn't let that happen.
But he couldn't win.
His vision blurred at the edges as exhaustion began to take hold.
I need to escape.
But how?
Vader raised his hand.
The Force closed around Obi-Wan's throat like an iron grip.
He was lifted from the ground, his body suspended helplessly in the air.
Choking.
Struggling.
His saber wavered.
The red blade rose.
"You will tell me everything you know," Vader said.
Obi-Wan never felt so helpless in his life.
The battlefield had changed.
Not only for those who fought upon its shattered surface—
But for those who watched from its edges.
Imperial officers in dark uniforms, their pristine composure long since abandoned. Clone troopers, their armor scorched and dulled by the environment. Personnel from the destroyed flagship, shaken and uncertain, gathered in uneven lines across the blackened terrain.
None of them spoke at first.
They simply watched.
Because what unfolded before them was not a battle they could comprehend—
It was something else entirely.
A duel between legends.
The name Obi-Wan Kenobi carried weight across the galaxy.
Even among the Empire.
Even among those who had been taught to despise the Jedi.
He had been a general in the Clone Wars.
A master of defense.
A warrior who had survived conflicts that had swallowed entire armies.
And yet—
They had watched him struggle.
They had watched him retreat under relentless assault.
They had watched Darth Vader press him back, step by step, strike by strike, until even the great Kenobi seemed… diminished.
A murmur spread among the Imperials.
Almost afraid to take shape.
"If this is Kenobi…"
"…what does that make Vader?"
The words lingered in the heated air.
Fear crept into their thoughts.
Respect followed closely behind.
And beneath both—
A quiet, undeniable awe.
But they were not the only ones watching.
High above the battlefield—
Hidden beyond sight—
A ship hovered in silence.
Its cloaking systems bent light around it, rendering it invisible against the smoke-filled sky. To those below, there was nothing but ash and cloud.
But inside—
Tension had reached its breaking point.
The cockpit was dimly lit, the glow of controls reflecting across strained faces. The hum of the ship's systems filled the space, steady but overshadowed by the weight of what they were witnessing.
Quinlan slammed his hand against the console, the sharp crack echoing through the confined space.
"We have to leave, Sebul!"
Sebul didn't even look at him.
His hands remained firmly on the controls, fingers tightening slightly as he monitored the battle below.
"No."
Quinlan turned sharply, disbelief flashing across his face.
"No?!" he snapped, his voice rising. "You saw that fight! We can't take him!"
Sebul's expression hardened, his jaw tightening as he stared ahead.
"I'm not leaving him."
Quinlan stepped closer, frustration boiling over.
"That's exactly what he wants!" he shouted, pointing toward the viewport where the distant figures of Vader and Obi-Wan clashed like forces of nature. "He's buying us time! That's what Jedi do!"
At that, Sebul finally turned.
"And I'm not a Jedi."
The words hung in the air.
Quinlan froze for a moment, caught off guard by the quiet defiance in his tone.
Sebul continued, his voice steady.
"Harry didn't put a Jedi in charge of this ship."
He tapped the console in front of him, the metallic sound sharp and deliberate.
"He put me."
Silence followed.
Behind them, the rescued rebels and Mustafarians watched anxiously, their eyes flicking between the two men and the battle below. Fear lingered in their expressions, but so did hope—the fragile kind that refused to die, even in a place like Mustafar.
And below—
The fight reached its peak.
Through the viewport, they saw it.
Obi-Wan—
Lifted from the ground.
Suspended in the air.
Held by an invisible grip around his throat.
His body strained, his movements weakening as he struggled against the unseen force.
Quinlan's hands curled into fists.
His jaw tightened.
"…That's it."
This time, Sebul didn't stop him.
Instead, he reached into a secured compartment beside his seat, his movements deliberate, almost reluctant.
He pulled out a small reinforced box.
Opened it.
Inside, nestled within cushioned slots, were three spherical objects.
Perfectly round.
Each etched with intricate symbols that glowed faintly beneath the surface, pulsing with contained energy. The runes shimmered in a way that felt unnatural—like something not entirely bound by the rules of the galaxy.
Quinlan frowned as he leaned closer.
"What is that?"
Sebul carefully picked one up, handling it with the precision of someone who knew exactly what it could do—and what it shouldn't.
He held it out.
Quinlan took it, turning the object slowly in his hand as he studied the glowing markings.
"A bomb?"
Sebul shook his head.
"Harry named it a magic grenade."
He pointed to a small indentation on its surface.
"Press there. Then throw."
Quinlan glanced back toward the battlefield.
Vader and Obi-Wan—
Too close.
"If I throw this," Quinlan said slowly, "I might kill both of them."
Sebul met his gaze without hesitation.
"It won't kill anyone."
Quinlan's eyes narrowed.
"Then what does it do?"
For a moment, Sebul didn't answer.
Then, a faint smirk touched his lips.
"It breaks things."
Quinlan waited.
"Electronic things," Sebul clarified.
Understanding dawned.
Quinlan's gaze snapped back to the viewport.
To Vader.
To the black armor.
To the systems that sustained him.
"…You're serious."
Sebul nodded once.
"Everything mechanical shuts down."
Quinlan let out a low breath, somewhere between disbelief and admiration.
"Harry's insane."
"Yeah," Sebul replied dryly. "But useful."
That was all Quinlan needed.
He stepped toward the rear of the cockpit.
"Open the ramp."
The ship responded instantly.
A section of the hull shifted, mechanisms sliding silently into place as a narrow opening formed within the cloaked exterior. The moment it opened, wind howled violently through the gap, carrying heat and ash into the ship.
Quinlan stood at the edge, the glowing sphere clenched tightly in his hand.
Behind him, Sebul called out,
"Don't miss."
A grin flickered across Quinlan's face.
"I never do."
And then—
He jumped.
His body dropped from the invisible ship like a falling shadow, swallowed immediately by the chaos of Mustafar's burning sky. The wind tore at his clothes as he descended, the ground rushing up to meet him.
Below—
Vader's grip tightened.
Obi-Wan's body strained against the invisible hold.
The red blade rose.
Then—
A disturbance.
Vader turned.
Just slightly.
Quinlan's arm snapped forward.
The sphere left his hand.
Fast.
Precise.
It cut through the air in a perfect arc, heading straight toward the Dark Lord of the Sith.
Vader reacted instantly.
His hand shot out.
The object stopped mid-flight.
Frozen.
Suspended in the air by the Force.
For a fraction of a second—
Everything stilled.
Time seemed to hold its breath.
Then—
The device activated.
A pulse rippled across its surface.
The glowing runes flared—
And—
BOOM.
It was not fire.
Not heat.
But force.
A violent shockwave erupted outward, slamming into everything within range. Ash exploded into the air, dust clouds surging outward as bodies were thrown from their feet.
The ground trembled.
Vader staggered.
For the first time—
He faltered.
Inside his suit—
Something changed.
A flicker.
A stutter.
Then—
Failure.
The steady rhythm of his breathing broke apart, glitching into uneven bursts before cutting out entirely. The crimson blade in his hand flickered violently—
Then died.
Across the battlefield, blasters fell silent as weapons shut down one by one. Systems failed. Circuits died.
Even Obi-Wan's lightsaber dimmed, its blue glow fading into nothing.
An unnatural silence fell.
Quinlan hit the ground hard, the impact jarring through his body, but he rolled immediately, pushing himself back to his feet.
"Kenobi!"
Obi-Wan collapsed forward as the invisible grip vanished, his body hitting the ground as he gasped desperately for air.
Quinlan rushed to him, grabbing his arm and pulling him upright.
"Can you move?"
Obi-Wan nodded weakly, still struggling to breathe.
"Yes…"
Above them, the cloaked ship shimmered into visibility, its form materializing against the smoke-filled sky. The ramp opened wide, cutting through the haze.
Sebul's voice echoed down,
"Move! Now!"
Quinlan didn't hesitate.
He pulled Obi-Wan forward, half-dragging, half-supporting him as they sprinted across the broken ground.
Behind them—
Vader stood.
Frozen within failing machinery.
The red lenses of his mask flickered faintly, dim and unstable.
Quinlan and Obi-Wan leapt onto the ramp just as it began to close, the metal sealing behind them with a sharp hiss.
The ship rose instantly.
Its engines roared to life as it lifted from the ground, vanishing once more into invisibility before shooting upward into the sky.
Inside the cockpit, Sebul exhaled sharply, tension finally breaking.
"…That worked."
Quinlan let out a breathless laugh as he helped Obi-Wan steady himself.
"I want the rest of the magic grenade."
Obi-Wan leaned heavily against the wall, his chest rising and falling as he fought to regain control of his breathing.
They had escaped.
For now.
