Chapter 112 - Chapter 112

The first sensation was not sight.

It was pain.

Not the sharp, immediate kind that demanded reaction, but something deeper—older. A lingering echo that clung to him even as consciousness returned. It coiled through his nerves like a phantom memory, reminding him of fire, of loss, of the moment everything had once been taken from him.

Then came awareness.

Darth Vader's eyes opened slowly within the dim, green glow of the bacta tank. The liquid surrounded him completely, pressing against his ruined flesh, seeping into every scar and nerve-ending with its cold, artificial mercy. It healed him. Sustained him.

And yet—

There was always something suffocating about it.

A silent drowning he had long since learned to endure.

For several seconds, he did not move. He simply existed within the fluid, suspended between recovery and recollection, allowing his thoughts to settle.

Something had happened.

And for the first time in years, the truth of it settled into his mind with chilling clarity.

He had been powerless.

The memory did not return all at once. It came in fragments, jagged and incomplete, but each piece carried weight.

His armor.

The mechanism that kept him alive—more than alive, made him something greater—had failed.

His breathing apparatus had ceased its rhythmic hiss. His limbs had refused to respond. Even the internal systems that regulated the constant agony of his existence had gone dark.

And his lightsaber—

Gone.

Extinguished as though it had never existed.

He had stood there, locked within his own body, aware and yet unable to act.

Helpless.

The word burned.

It carved itself into his thoughts with a heat that rivaled Mustafar's endless lava flows. His mechanical hand twitched within the bacta, fingers curling slowly as the memory tightened its grip on him.

That moment—those few minutes of complete vulnerability—were unforgivable.

Unacceptable.

It would not happen again.

A name rose unbidden from the depths of his mind.

Quinlan Vos.

Even now, submerged in healing fluid, Vader felt his jaw tighten.

He had seen him. Not clearly, not at first—but enough. Enough to recognize the presence. The movement. The way the Force had shifted around him.

A Jedi.

And yet—not quite.

Anakin remembered him from another life. Not as a friend, nor even as a rival. Vos had always existed on the edges of the Order, skirting its rigid doctrines with a casual disregard that had unsettled the more traditional Masters.

He had been unpredictable.

Unorthodox.

A man who followed instinct over rule.

Some had whispered a title for him—one the Council never acknowledged.

Gray Jedi.

Anakin had never cared for such distinctions. To him, power had always been power, regardless of how it was labeled.

But now—

Now that memory carried new weight.

Because he had not been alone.

The image returned with sharper clarity this time, forcing itself into Vader's consciousness.

Obi-Wan Kenobi.

And beside him—

Quinlan Vos.

Vader's fingers curled tighter.

This will not be easy.

The realization came without hesitation, without denial. He did not lie to himself. He did not underestimate his enemies.

Kenobi alone had proven… troublesome.

With Vos at his side—

It would be difficult.

But difficulty had never been a barrier.

Only an obstacle to be removed.

And there were matters far more important than either of them.

A name surfaced within his thoughts, quieter than the rest—but infinitely more significant.

Luke.

The name echoed through him, resonating with a certainty that surpassed all doubt. His son. His blood. A future that had been hidden from him, stolen away by the very man who had once called himself his brother.

Obi-Wan had taken him.

Hidden him.

The betrayal was absolute.

Vader's gaze hardened within the tank, though no one could see it.

I will find him.

The thought formed with quiet inevitability.

I will take him.

There would be no uncertainty. The galaxy itself could stand against him, and it would not matter.

Luke Skywalker would be his.

Yet even as that resolve solidified, another thought began to take shape—slower, more deliberate.

The weapon.

Vader's mind returned to that moment with precision, dissecting it piece by piece.

The object Vos had thrown—it had not exploded. It had not struck with physical force.

And yet—

Everything had stopped.

His suit.

His lightsaber.

The troopers' blasters.

Every mechanical function within its radius had simply… ceased.

That was not ordinary technology. It bore none of the crude signatures of Imperial engineering. Nor did it resemble anything the Jedi had ever employed.

Which meant—

It was something else entirely.

Powerful.

Far too powerful.

A slow, almost imperceptible smile formed beneath the respirator mask.

Something that can disable me…

The thought lingered.

…can disable anyone.

Even—

Darth Sidious.

His master.

The most powerful being in the galaxy.

Vader did not deceive himself. He knew the truth of their relationship. He knew his own strength—and he knew its limits.

To challenge Sidious directly would be… unwise.

Unless—

He possessed an advantage.

This was the power.

And power, once discovered, was meant to be claimed.

The hiss of machinery broke through his thoughts.

The bacta began to drain.

The green fluid receded slowly, exposing the dark silhouette of his form as the tank opened with a sharp mechanical release. Air rushed in, cold and dry, replacing the suffocating embrace of the liquid.

Vader stepped forward.

The fluid cascaded from his body, dripping from scarred flesh and exposed cybernetics alike. He did not react to the sensation. He never did.

Servants moved immediately, silent and efficient, their movements practiced to perfection. They approached him without hesitation, without fear—because fear, in his presence, was inevitable.

His body felt… restored.

The damage repaired.

The pain dulled to its usual, constant hum.

But his mind—

His mind was clearer than it had been in years.

An officer approached, stopping at a respectful distance before bowing his head.

"My Lord."

Vader did not look at him immediately. His gaze remained fixed ahead as he spoke, his voice low and mechanical.

"Speak."

The officer hesitated, but only for a fraction of a second.

"The malfunction…"

Vader turned his head.

Even that slight movement carried weight.

"Yes?"

"It was not permanent damage, my Lord."

There was a pause.

"All systems are fully operational."

Vader stilled completely.

The officer swallowed before continuing.

"The suit… the weapons… all mechanical functions…"

"…were only temporarily disabled."

Silence fell over the chamber.

"They are now functioning as new."

Vader turned away, already moving as the armor pieces were brought to him.

One by one, they were reattached.

The mechanical limbs locked into place with precise, unforgiving clicks. The chest unit sealed over his torso, enclosing him once more within the prison that sustained his life.

The respirator engaged.

HISS—

The sound filled the chamber, steady and controlled.

The illusion of invincibility had been broken.

His suit could be stopped.

His life could be threatened.

And that knowledge—

That realization—

Was not a weakness.

It was a revelation.

The final piece was placed.

The mask descended.

Darkness swallowed his vision for a brief moment before the systems activated, restoring sight through the red-tinted lenses.

Vader turned toward the viewport.

Mustafar burned below, its rivers of lava cutting through the blackened landscape like veins of fire. The fortress—his fortress—was gone. Reduced to ruin.

The rebels had escaped.

Kenobi still lived.

Quinlan Vos now wielded some unknown weapon.

And somewhere in the vastness of the galaxy—

Hidden.

His son.

Vader stood in silence for a long moment before speaking, his voice quiet, almost contemplative.

"I will find you."

The words carried no doubt.

"And when I do…"

He paused.

"…nothing will stand in my way."

The skies above Bogano had never been so alive.

For years, they had known only silence—soft winds drifting lazily over untouched land, clouds moving in slow, indifferent patterns. It had been a world at peace, distant from the noise and chaos of the greater galaxy.

Now—

That silence had been broken.

Twin streaks of motion tore across the open sky, engines screaming with a sharp, metallic fury that echoed across the cliffs and valleys below. Two TIE fighters cut through the air, their black frames flashing under the sunlight as they twisted and turned with impossible speed.

Except—

They were no longer Imperial.

Inside one of them, Luke Skywalker was laughing.

Not a restrained chuckle. Not the polite amusement of someone trying to stay composed.

"This is amazing!"

His voice crackled through the comms, alive with excitement as his hands moved across the controls. He wasn't fumbling. Every movement came naturally, as if the machine beneath him understood his intent before he even fully formed it.

The fighter responded instantly.

Almost like it had been waiting for this.

Luke leaned forward slightly, eyes sharp, awareness stretching beyond the cockpit as the world blurred around him. The horizon tilted, the sky shifting as he pulled the controls and sent the TIE diving low over the rolling green terrain before snapping it upward in a smooth, effortless arc.

Behind him, another fighter surged forward.

"Luke! I'm right behind you!"

Friga's voice carried through the comm, determined and slightly breathless.

Luke's grin widened.

"Try and keep up!"

He twisted the controls, the fighter rolling sharply before banking hard to the left. The maneuver was tight—too tight for someone inexperienced—but he executed it cleanly, the engines screaming as the ship responded with precision.

Friga followed.

But she was just a fraction too slow.

A burst of color splattered across her cockpit.

"Hit!" Luke shouted, unable to keep the triumph out of his voice.

Friga groaned loudly over the comm.

"That doesn't count! You surprised me!"

Luke laughed again, already looping back around for another pass, the thrill of the chase coursing through him.

Below them, on the open ground overlooking the wide valley, Harry stood with his arms folded across his chest, his gaze fixed on the sky above.

Beside him, Obi-Wan Kenobi watched as well.

But where Harry's expression carried approval, Obi-Wan's held something else entirely.

A quiet weight that had nothing to do with the training unfolding above them.

A few steps away, Sebul stood with his hands planted firmly on his hips, his eyes tracking the fighters with a wide, impressed grin.

"Not bad," he muttered under his breath. "Kid's got instincts."

Above, Luke rolled his fighter mid-air, the motion smooth and controlled before he angled downward, diving straight toward Friga with reckless confidence.

This time—

She reacted faster.

Paint rounds burst between them, streaks of bright color flashing across shields and hulls as the two fighters crossed paths in a blur of motion.

Harry had changed everything.

The weapons no longer carried lethal force.

The systems had been adjusted, safety protocols layered over every function.

Even the limits had been altered.

Now—

This was training.

But it felt close enough to taste.

Friga pushed her fighter harder, her voice sharp with determination.

"I'm not losing again!"

Luke's reply came instantly, carried on laughter and challenge.

"Then don't!"

And then—

He cut power.

Abruptly.

The TIE fighter dropped like a stone.

Friga's ship surged forward, overshooting before she could correct.

Luke's engines roared back to life.

He shot upward behind her in a perfect climb.

Another burst—

Another clean hit.

Friga groaned again, louder this time.

"This is unfair!"

On the ground, Sebul let out a loud laugh, shaking his head.

"That's great flying!"

His grin widened as he watched Luke pull into another tight turn.

"Kid flies like he's been doing it his whole life."

Obi-Wan didn't respond immediately.

His gaze remained fixed on Luke's fighter as it danced through the sky, weaving between incoming fire with effortless grace.

There was something in his eyes.

Something soft.

"He has," Obi-Wan said quietly.

Sebul frowned slightly, glancing at him.

"What?"

Obi-Wan didn't look away.

His voice, when he spoke again, was softer still.

"He inherited it."

A pause stretched between them.

Then—

"…from his father."

Unspoken truths lingering behind them like shadows that refused to fade.

Harry glanced sideways at Obi-Wan for just a moment, studying him, before returning his attention to the sky.

He didn't interrupt.

Above them, the exercise had shifted.

It was no longer Luke and Friga.

Krigo and Lokans took over the sky. Their movements rough at first, their turns too wide, their reactions a fraction too slow.

But they were learning.

Paint rounds filled the air, streaks of bright color cutting through the sky in chaotic bursts. Some shots went wide, missing entirely. Others landed perfectly, splashing across hulls with satisfying impact.

Laughter echoed across the comm channels.

Mistakes were made.

Corrected.

Repeated.

Improved.

Harry watched everything.

"Let them enjoy it."

Obi-Wan turned slightly toward him.

Harry didn't look away from the sky as he continued.

"They won't have this luxury for long."

Because they both knew.

The war that was coming.

Soon—

These children would not be firing paint.

They would be fighting for their lives.

Harry's gaze remained fixed on the sky, tracking Krigo as he climbed higher than the others, his movements growing more confident with every passing second.

Paint fire lit up the sky in streaks of color.

Engines roaring.

Heart racing.

And for just a little while—

War felt very far away.
