Chapter 407 - Subversion

A relentless barrage of macro-caliber shells swept across the firmament, systematically obliterating one Great Gargant after another.

Simultaneously, the newly deployed Destroyer-class Heavy Automata closed the distance, engaging the smaller-profile Gargants in brutal, close-quarters melee. Power claws clashed against whirling buzz-saws.

The power claws of the Destroyer automata shimmered with a faint, auramite-golden effulgence, each sweeping strike driven by immense hydraulic force. In response, the mechanized cutting-wheels of the Gargants roared with a piercing, high-pitched whine, their serrated edges spinning at hyper-velocity.

The two mechanical forces collided in a spectacular eruption of blinding sparks that illuminated the entire ash-choked warzone. The incandescent debris danced and cascaded across the grinding metal hulls like battlefield wraiths, bearing witness to a clash of sheer technological asymmetry.

Gazing upon these fluid, lethally responsive engines of iron, the Imperial defenders instantly recognized the peerless craftsmanship of the machines.

Within the deep, smoking crater left by the previous Great Gargant explosion, the second Punisher-class Mega-Titan completed its rapid system-rectification. With a thunderous surge of motive force, it vaulted clear of the depression.

Its agility was predatory and instantaneous, completely shattering every established paradigm regarding machines of such titanic proportions. The sight of a God-Machine executing a dynamic leap was unprecedented; the watching throngs of the Imperium could discern an uncanny sense of fluid grace and kinetic elegance within the colossal construct.

On a hundred battlefields, these soldiers had seen Adeptus Astartes leap into battle with lightning claws bared; they had witnessed Contemptor Dreadnoughts mirror such martial fluidity. But when a standard combat maneuver was seamlessly executed by a towering, one-hundred-and-sixty-meter titan, the cognitive dissonance was absolute.

The tech-priests felt their bio-cognitators boiling within their craniums. They could scarcely conceive the sheer structural violence that would occur if an Imperial Emperor-class Titan attempted to propel itself airborne.

Only then did the assembled Tech-Mages recall a far more harrowing detail: these juggernauts had made a direct orbital drop from the void.

The Imperium of Man possessed absolutely no technology capable of deploying a titan via direct atmospheric insertion. The standard protocols of the Collegia Titanica required massive lander assemblies to safely ground a God Machine, followed by extensive battlefield deployment rituals. Titan-haulers possessing a mass equivalent to half a star-frigate were exceptionally rare relics of a forgotten age.

To drop a ten-thousand-ton titan directly out of orbit and onto a combat zone was an act that completely bypassed the doctrinal understanding of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

Inside the hive's strategic command sanctum, the Magi stared at the pict-feeds, their countenances fixed in expressions of absolute, unvarnished disbelief, as if trapped within a mathematically impossible hallucination. Their vocal synthesizers deteriorated into a chaotic chorus of binary static and error codes, while their mechanical augmentations clicked and whirred in erratic loops.

"The Omnissiah walks among us!"

"Praise the Machine God! Praise the Machine God!"

"God Machines! True God Machines!"

The Astra Militarum general and the few Adeptus Astartes commanders present watched in mute astonishment as the typically aloof, dogmatic Magi of the Titan Orders degenerated into a state of hysterical, fanatic ecstasy.

Yet, the tech-priests were not alone in their profound shock. Axion was experiencing his own share of bewilderment.

Though he had spent extensive periods drifting through the databanks of countless Imperial starships and participating in numerous compliance actions, this marked his very first encounter with the proper Titans of the Imperium.

Axion had historically resolved the vast majority of conflicts within the cold vacuum of space. When the Tyranid Hive Fleets had breached the Segmentum Pacificus, the Titan Legions of the Imperium had failed to arrive in time; the ground defense had been anchored primarily by standard Knight worlds and militarized industrial lifters.

Now, circumstances compelled Axion to engage in large-scale Imperial planetary warfare. The green skin infection had metastasized across far too many worlds simultaneously, and the vast majority of the Ork forces had already integrated into the Imperial defensive perimeters, resulting in a chaotic, entangled melee across every continent.

With orbital bombardments strictly restricted to prevent catastrophic friendly fire, Axion was forced to fragment his fleet, deploying localized ground forces to systematically excise the Ork infection from each contested planetary theater. Once the transport bays were cleared, his starships immediately returned to upper orbit to contest the void against the ramshackle scrap-fleets of the greenskins.

Regarding the strategic data he had previously harvested from Imperial repositories concerning their Titan assets, Axion had long categorized the specifications as a grand, bureaucratic exaggeration. After all, he had encountered the twisted, hyperbolic praises and corrupt record-keeping of Imperial scribes far too many times to take them at face value.

Furthermore, while the biological Bio-Titans of the Tyranids were remarkable to the Abominable Intelligence as massive evolutionary anomalies, they remained grounded within the logic of organic mass.

The Titans of the Imperium, however, struck Axion as a pinnacle of abstract and fundamentally irrational engineering.

What was the operational purpose of the cathedral-like superstructure mounted upon the machine's spine?

Would it not be significantly more optimal to utilize that structural mass for additional weapon arrays?

If weapons were unavailable, dismantling the cathedrals to reduce chassis weight and enhance kinetic responsiveness would be the mathematically superior choice. Why burden a heavy weapon platform with tonnes of baroque, non-functional masonry?

This collection of primitive mechanical bodies moved with an agonizingly slow, cumbersome gait. Their load-bearing joints were designed with severe inefficiencies; a multi-pedal configuration would have yielded far greater stability and structural load distribution.

Yet, if the Imperial Titans were riddled with structural flaws, the gargantuan war engines of the Orks were an offense to the laws of physics itself.

Axion could not fathom how these heaps of metallic refuse managed to achieve locomotion at all. The internal mechanical configurations exposed by the ruptured hulls of the Great Gargants were completely illogical.

Massive cog-wheels were nested haphazardly into smaller gears without any discernible mathematical cadence. It appeared as though the machine had skipped the entire paradigm of engineering design, its creators merely welding on random mechanical components mid-construction to resolve localized failures on a whim.

As the twin Punisher-class Mega-Titans systematically crushed the greenskin vanguard, Axion maintained a continuous, high-definition observation of the Ork war engines. Yet, his algorithms quickly determined that their construction followed no predictable patterns or standardized blueprints.

The internal architecture of every single Great Gargant was entirely unique. Even among those that shared an identical, wedge-shaped "scrap-heap" profile, their internal power-transmission systems varied completely.

This lack of cohesion was further compounded by variants that mimicked the physiology of giant crabs or mechanical scorpions. As for the smaller Gargants, each represented a distinct, highly individualistic triumph of abstract absurdity.

Yet, despite their structural chaos, they possessed one undeniable advantage over the war engines of the Imperium: the Orks prioritized overwhelming firepower above all else.

Every single greenskin engine resembled a mechanical urchin, its chassis bristling with a dense forest of gun tubes, macro-barrels, and crude hydraulic blades. The sheer volume of weapon turrets crammed onto their frames caused Axion's processing units to stutter as they attempted to calculate how such primitive reactors could possibly generate enough energy to power them all.

The answer, however, was quickly laid bare.

Upon a micro-analytical breakdown of the warzone footage, Axion noted with dark fascination that a significant portion of the mechanical articulation was driven entirely by manual labor.

Hordes of Grots and enslaved Squigs were physically turning massive iron cranks to rotate the primary turret assemblies. Within half-open, unshielded gun decks, Ork gunners chained themselves to crude, large-caliber assault kannons, screaming their lungs out as they pulled mechanical firing lanyards.

Faced with such primitive defenses, the Destroyer automata merely swept their arm-mounted Plasma Burners across the enemy hulls, instantly reducing the crews to blackened ash.

The hyper-thermal discharge did not merely liquefy the haphazardly welded armor plates; it effortlessly triggered catastrophic sympathetic detonations within the unshielded magazine bays. Massive stores of volatile, heavy-caliber shells cooked off from within, tearing the bizarre frames of the Super Gargants apart in spectacular displays of internal pressure.

This identical scene of mechanical execution was playing out simultaneously across dozens of worlds throughout the segmentum.

The Orks could well rely on total mechanization to push back the organic tides of the Tyranid swarm, but such a doctrine was entirely useless when brought against the absolute, uncompromising mechanization of the Iron Men.

Beyond the clash of these mechanical gods, the standard Ork ground forces found themselves utterly impotent. The common Ork Boy possessed neither the cognitive reaction time nor the sheer physical power of the Automated Sentry-Troopers.

In the vehicle engagements, where Ork armor was not being crushed underfoot by the Titans or dismantled by the Destroyer automata, the Magaron-class Atomic Pulse Cannons mounted by the Erratana Armored Wardens systematically picked off their heavy armor.

The Grot-piloted Killa Kans and the Ork-driven Deff Dreads were systematically sniped, their chassis detonating one by one under the searing lances of atomic energy.

The Speed Freeks, attempting to maneuver their warbikes and light buggies across the flanks, were utterly broken by the long-barreled sniper cannons of the Peltast Automata. The precise kinetic impacts did not always claim the lives of the resilient greenskins, but they invariably reduced their precious vehicles to a scattering of burning shrapnel.

Deprived of their mechanical mounts, the surviving Orks were quickly run down, cut into crimson ribbons by the power blades of the Sentry-Troopers or reduced to ash by targeted bursts of neutron radiation.
