Chapter 414 - The Final Product

The moment the gravity-shackles bound a fresh planetary mantle into position, the logic engine of the Heart of the Forge systematically calculated the baseline trajectories for its subsequent orbital displacement. An artificial attack-moon or planetary fortress, by its very nature, lacked the sub-light propulsion systems characteristic of orthodox warships. Against such non-maneuverable assets, the Heart of the Forge was not even required to close the vector to deliver an absolute structural termination.

However, while the Super-Mass Projector was capable of accelerating dense matter to terrifying fractions of the speed of light, transit across realspace remained bound by temporal constraints; the physical kinetic ordnance required time to traverse the void.

Furthermore, the operational calculus governing a hyper-massive physical projectile differed drastically from that of coherent energy beams or lance weapons. Executing an inter-system kinetic strike across extreme distances demanded the synthesis of billions of localized variables. The gravitational fields of adjacent celestial bodies, cosmic background radiation fields, and local space-time curvature all threatened to deflect the projectile from its intended trajectory.

Even the cybernetically reinforced scrap-worlds of the Orks could not survive a direct impact of this scale. Yet, if such a rogue kinetic payload were to inadvertently deviate into an Imperial sector-world, the resulting cataclysm was all too mathematically predictable: the terrestrial target would be instantly converted into expanding clouds of atomic dust.

Conversely, local gravitational anomalies were not purely detrimental to the strategic equations. By charting a mathematically perfect ballistic path, the micro-gravitational pull of natural celestial mechanics could be leveraged to slingshot the ordnance, amplifying its terminal velocity and raising overall kinetic efficiency by 0.5 to 1 percent.

When dealing with a strategic asset capable of systemic devastation, even a fractional augmentation in terminal yield would undergo violent, exponential scaling upon impact.

Fortunately, as the central command node, Axion maintained command over multiple attendant vanguard warships, utilizing tight-beam quantum communication to distribute the hyper-spatial computational load across a decentralized net. Bolstered by the vast, monolithic processing arrays of three attendant Titan-class capital ships, the complex calculations required to chart a kinetic execution across several star systems presented no significant strain to his cogitation gates.

As the catastrophic shockwaves of the kinetic discharge rippled across the baseline energy grids of the shaken solar system once more, the planetary core that had hung suspended above the chassis of the Heart of the Forge vanished from realspace optics, leaving no telemetry signature behind.

Yet, following the release of this secondary salvo, the Heart of the Forge did not initiate immediate translation protocols to its next firing coordinate.

Instead, a shimmering, quicksilver luminescence began to coalesce around the vacant firing channels of the Super-Mass Projector. Monolithic swarms of nanites, fueled by the raw stellar matter reaped during the previous planetary consumption cycles, began to aggressively iteratively refine and reinforce the framework of the super-weapon.

The heavy, structural spires flanking the projection channel extended outward, curving back in an aggressive, sweeping arc.

"Throne above... that looks precisely like the handlebar assembly of a Custodian jetbike."

Through the reinforced viewport of an Imperial cruiser, a battle-brother of the White Scars Chapter, currently seconded to the Deathwatch, broke the silence of the command deck as he watched the alien megastructure assume its increasingly bizarre silhouette.

His casual observation immediately drew a sharp, binharic-tinged rebuke from an adjacent iron-clad brother of the Iron Hands Chapter.

"Must your primitive, tribal mind compare every architectural triumph of the Omnissiah to a mechanical bipedal mount? The structural sophistication and sheer majesty of this machine-work exists far beyond the parameters of your limited imagination."

Having voiced his theological displeasure, the son of Medusa pressed himself closer against the armored viewport, his multi-spectral bionic eyes locked onto the shifting silver tides of the Heart of the Forge in a state of absolute, devotional fixation.

"A magnificent monument of cybernetic perfection... absolute destructive dominance. This is the true, unyielding force required to guarantee the eternal dominion and survival of Mankind and the Imperium."

The plains-born warrior merely cast a dry, unimpressed glance at the iron-wrought Space Marine who was functionally offering prayers to the superstructure, before turning toward a battle-brother of the Space Wolves.

The son of Fenris simply shrugged, uttering a low, localized idiom that remained entirely opaque to the uninitiated.

"There are no wolves on Fenris."

As the silver sheen of the nanite clouds finally dissolved into the vacuum, the sharp, angular C-shaped configuration of the weapon had smoothed into a perfectly circular, monolithic ring. The sweeping rear structures had fused seamlessly at their termini, forming an immense, unbroken orbital loop.

To the baseline human eye, it resembled nothing more than an unthinkably massive mechanical aiming reticle.

In truth, this was the fully realized configuration of the Super-Mass Projector. This megastructure had never been engineered as a weapon of war; it was an industrial engineering mechanism originating from the heights of the ancient human Federation.

In that forgotten epoch, it was utilized to realign or artificially synthesize entire star systems.

The colossal ring functioned as a specialized, quantum hyper-dimensional aperture. Unlike a Dimension Collapse Bomb, its operational purpose was to translate physical matter into the hyper-dimensional frameworks of quantum space, systematically elevating its dimensional state.

During the golden age of the Federation, humanity could manipulate and relocate planets and star systems at will through the deployment of this specific technology. A world would be cleanly extracted from its native orbital plane, elevated into quantum space to undergo absolute data-compression, and subsequently propelled via the Super-Mass Projector across distances spanning thousands or tens of thousands of light-years.

The intricate, grid-like channels scoring the inner diameter of the circular loop were specialized hyper-quantum containment housings. Within these thirty-six localized chambers, thirty-six intact planets could be held simultaneously in a state of stable quantum compression.

Naturally, outside of planetary migration and system synthesis, this megastructure allowed the Federation to lock onto any non-viable world and literally hurl it out of the galactic rim like a child flicking a glass marble.

As to whether these rogue worlds would eventually collide with unknown objects within the inter-galactic void, the logicians of that era spent little time calculating.

The vast majority of the rogue, dead worlds that currently drifted through the freezing, extra-galactic void between the Great Rifts and the galactic edge were the discarded remnants of the Federation's industrial zoning. These planets had either disrupted the orbital resonance of high-yield star systems or presented a mathematical collision risk to localized sectors.

Under such conditions, the mega-corporations or administrative cartels governing those sectors would petition the Federation for an immediate relocation mandate.

Once the bureaucratic machinery intervened, the target worlds would be systematically discarded, almost exclusively accelerated beyond the gravitational boundary of the galaxy. After all, allowing a planet devoid of solar containment to wander aimlessly within the galactic plane was an invitation to systemic architectural instability.

Occasionally, eccentric human artists would purchase these decommissioned worlds at nominal material costs. They took pleasure in constructing artificial cosmic vistas, commercializing their terraformed creations as supreme architectural statements.

Yet, in objective reality, the vast majority of these aesthetic constructs were inherently unstable. The moment active mechanical maintenance was withdrawn, the artificial balances would fail, triggering rapid systemic chain-reactions that culminated in total self-destruction.

Furthermore, the Super-Mass Projector offered secondary tactical utilities exclusive to the Iron Men.

The vast majority of organic life-forms possessed a baseline physiology incapable of surviving the hyper-dimensional transition of quantum space; any organic consciousness subjected to the process would instantly fragment, dissolving into the non-linear matrix of quantum processing space.

In stark contrast, the Iron Men, as silicon-based synthetic intelligences utilizing advanced quantum processing cores, were entirely immune to this cognitive dissolution.

This structural immunity allowed the Super-Mass Projector to serve as a high-velocity transit mechanism, launching entire machine fleets from one star system to another with near-instantaneous precision. Compared to the maddening unpredictability and spiritual hazards of sub-warp navigation, this methodology was favored by the Iron Men for rapid strategic deployment.

Navigation through the Empyrean was akin to skipping stones across a tempestuous sea, one either overshot the target vector by light-years or fell disastrously short, rendering exact distance calculations functionally impossible.

While transit across a handful of light-years remained manageable under standard engines, crossing a distance of less than a single light-year through conventional realspace often required consecutive solar months. Even though Axion had integrated the warp-navigation computational modules harvested from the League of Votann's Wayfinders, short-range interstellar transit remained a highly inefficient operational bottleneck.

Within the vast, recovered archives of his databases, there existed blueprints for a far more stable method of interstellar transit.

During the Federation era, these constructs were designated as Star Gates. However, due to their astronomical material costs and comparatively limited operational projection range, they had historically been constructed only within the highest-tier hub sectors of the old empire.

Axion had no intention of wasting invaluable industrial assets on such economically unviable infrastructure. The Iron Men were machines; they did not require the extensive array of organic life-support systems and safety baffles that inflated the cost of a Star Gate.

The Super-Mass Projector was more than sufficient for his strategic requirements.

If strategic parameters demanded it, the Iron Men would not hesitate to utilize their own warships as kinetic ordnance. Given the immense mass of a capital ship coupled with the hardened shell of its quantum core, initiating a hyper-velocity launch sequence would ensure the vessel could punch cleanly through the core of an enemy planet with absolute, mathematical certainty.
