A horrific psychic storm raged across the continent of flesh. Deep within its nest, the synapses of a Hive Fleet Kraken Norn Queen ruptured under the sheer, concentrated pressure of the warp-phenomenon.
The Great Devourer could not contain its fury.
The moment the mechanical fleet tore free from the warp, a cataclysmic psychic shockwave erupted. Even across the vast, echoing gulf of the void, the howling malice of that singular, enraged consciousness reverberated all the way to the remote borders of the Imperium.
Yet for the soulless Iron Men, this mental onslaught registered as nothing at all.
It did, however, disrupt the fleet's power distribution networks. The staggering psychic detonation within the intergalactic void shattered the Heart of the Forge's titan-class void shields, despite their dozens of kilometers of layered thickness.
An eruption of such magnitude naturally drew the gaze of the entities within the Immaterium.
This time, however, neither the Chaos Gods nor the golden silhouette on the Throneworld made a move. The void-gulf beyond the galactic rim was a desolate expanse where their power could barely reach. Without sapient life to serve as a conduit for their will, even the Ruinous Powers refused to squander their divine might. Furthermore, the terrifying collective will of the Great Devourer was a force that even the Four Gods and the Emperor approached with caution. Though the warp deities constantly preyed upon the living galaxy, scheming and undermining one another's fonts of power, they understood that mortal life was the very foundation of their existence. Under no circumstances would they allow the Great Devourer to consume everything.
The horrific waves of psychic energy did not merely shatter the shields of the Heart of the Forge; they inflicted severe structural damage upon the escort vessels. Splintered hulls of assault cruisers and strike cruisers drifted in the wake of the blast.
Then, self-repair protocols engaged. Nanites swarmed across the fractured hulls, initiating rapid damage control. The Nano-Blight was unleashed, swiftly fusing the drifting wreckage back into cohesive superstructures.
Tremendous energy swelled within the mass projectors atop the Heart of the Forge. A specialized containment field enveloped the colossal slabs of biological matter that had been blasted apart during the initial engagement. These planetary-scale biological remnants were compressed, folded, and dragged into the mass projectors' storage bays.
Simultaneously, the Heart of the Forge began to turn its massive bulk, re-engaging its warp drives.
Before making the jump, Axion used the mass projectors to reel in the broken remnants of the escort fleet, which the nanites had hastily compressed into dense metallic spheres.
The Heart of the Forge plunged back into the Immaterium mere moments before the next wave of Tyranid retaliation arrived. Its warp engines thrummed at absolute capacity, driving the colossal vessel back toward the galaxy.
Driven to madness, the Great Devourer pursued them through the warp like a boundless, suffocating shadow. It was as if an ant had suddenly materialized beside a titan, completely ignored the titan's crushing blows, torn a chunk of flesh from its body, and fled with the prize right before its eyes.
Yet, riding the very warp-surges whipped up by the Great Devourer's fury, the Heart of the Forge fled back to the galactic rim at extreme velocity. Without Tyranid organisms to act as synapse anchors in the deep void, the Great Devourer could only watch helplessly as its quarry escaped.
A profound, tragic atmosphere echoed through the Immaterium, a palpable sense of the Hive Mind's thwarted indignation.
Axion, however, had used this perilous encounter to compile the first comprehensive profile on the Tyranid bio-clusters. The log included tactical behavioral analyses of the Tyranid organisms' offensive capabilities and numerous predictive data models.
Detecting a dense concentration of stellar projections through its warp sensors, the Heart of the Forge tore through the veil of the Immaterium and successfully re-entered realspace at the fringes of the galaxy.
The nanite swarms and the condensed masses of the escort vessels were released from the magnetic confines of the mass projectors. The nanites immediately set to work, dismantling the compressed wreckage and rapidly reconstructing the damaged hulls. Equipped with an immense reservoir of nanite matrices, the Heart of the Forge could fabricate an entire fleet in short order, let alone repair one.
Within tens of minutes, the escort ships were fully restored to operational status, and Axion initiated the next phase of the operation.
The harvested chunks of Hive Fleet Kraken flesh stored within the projectors were released. Countless nanite swarms descended upon the meat, devouring and refining this extraordinary biological bounty.
The escort fleet split into two elements. One detachment remained stationary to oversee the Nano-Blight's material extraction, while the remaining vessels formed up with the Heart of the Forge and charted a direct course for the outer reaches of the Aberrus System.
Evidently, the initial strategic calculus had been flawed. Axion's assessment of the Tyranids had underestimated their sheer scale. Though they had escaped by luck, attempting to sever the threat at its absolute root was entirely unrealistic. A biological mass measuring in light-years far exceeded the fleet's current destructive capacity.
When the Heart of the Forge and its dozens of attendant vessels translated into realspace at the Mandeville point of the Aberrus System, the terminal ends of Hive Fleet Kraken's tendrils immediately filled their sensors.
The multi-light-year trunk of the bio-fleet remained unassailable. But Axion had no intention of sparing the smaller, terminal structures that spanned only a few light-minutes.
Having pre-charged its weapon systems during transit, the Heart of the Forge unleashed its full firepower the moment it cleared the warp. The spine-chilling, apocalyptic energy of the Oblivion Cannons converged. Bearing the wrath of absolute annihilation, twin beams of light struck one of the tendrils, severing it completely.
This sudden, devastating strike triggered a massive chain reaction.
On the worlds of Luann and Glacemaw, hundreds of millions of Tyranid bio-beasts froze in unison. A moment later, their rigid, marching ranks dissolved into fleeting chaos. Even the synapse creatures fell into a state of bewildered disorientation, lifting their heads to stare into the void above.
The bio-ships currently trading broadsides with the Imperial Navy fleets shifted their behavior first. The living armada turned in unison, abandoning their vectors to dive toward the upper atmosphere.
On the surface, the Tyranid ground swarms began snatching up corpses, turning on their heels, and sprinting away from the front lines. The thunderous rumble of their retreat and the massive walls of dust they kicked up led the warriors of the four Adeptus Astartes Chapters to believe a final, apocalyptic assault was underway.
The Lamenters moved among the mortal auxiliary lines, calming the panicked human soldiers and rallying their spirits.
The Iron Lords stood in grim silence, running diagnostic checks on their extensive bionic augmentations.
The Knights of the Raven slipped away to their armories, securing every available melta bomb.
Meanwhile, the Scythes of the Emperor offered quiet, final prayers to their Primarch.
Every soul on the line braced for the most horrific onslaught of the campaign.
Yet, as the earth-shaking thunder of millions of claws gradually subsided, the swirling curtains of ash and snow began to settle.
Nothing remained upon the cratered, scorched earth. Even the mangled carcasses of the slain Tyranids had been dragged away.
"My Lord... where did the xenos go?"
Huddled in the trenches alongside the mortal troops, the Lamenters Space Marines looked out into the barren wastes, equally mystified. But caution was a trait hammered into every Astartes.
"The xenos may be orchestrating a deeper stratagem. Do not lower your guard. Watch the fortifications and monitor the seismic sensors. Tyranid Trygons could breach our floorboards at any second. At the first sign of subterranean movement, seal the breaches with melta or plasma fire immediately. Move swiftly."
The exact same scene played out across the defensive lines of the Scythes of the Emperor.
But as the minutes bled into hours, nothing followed. A heavy, absolute silence settled over the scarred battlefield.
