Chapter 13 - Gossip in Tavern

Deep in the night, while the couple was having fun in another location within Tokkarion, in the slum, in a tavern to be more precise.

From the outside it looks humble, delightful and clean. Timber and softwooden tree trunks make up most of the building's outer structure.

It was impossible to see through the curtained windows, but the enthusiastic noises from within can be felt outside.

As one enter the tavern through the decorated, metal door, you're welcomed by a sense of home and joyful music.

The bartender was engaged in a conversation, but still manages to welcome you with a smile.

Even though, the one who entered at this hour was a priest from the order. The clientele present, mostly adventurers mixed with a few mercenaries and thugs, glanced at the priest for a moment before resuming their conversation as if accustomed to sight like this.

The priest in question remained silent as he sat in a corner. His white robe spotless acting like a beacon in the dimly lit tavern. He sleek black hair shone as it had been waxed, his brown eyes scanning the unruly lots before quietly settling down as he ordered a glass of scotch. Something he likes to come out during the night like this not only to unwind but to listen to gossip, taverns and bars are good place to gather free intelligence while killing time listening to people's adventure.

Soon, a glass of whisky was put on his table, he took a sip, the brown liquid slide through his oesophagus. He nodded in appreciation while muttering under his breath.

''The whisky turns down the volume on my thoughts. It brings memories of good times past, and I let myself dwell in them rather than think. And in that moment I am here and not, existing in two perfect moments. Somehow it steadies me, gives me the resolve to go on. Well, time to actively listen to gossip.''

The last sentence was said in a barely a whisper. By concentrating he filtered through each discussion until one of them caught his attention, it was discussion between two people he identified as adventurers, they sat three to four tables in the opposite direction.

''You know I heard something unexpected happened at the guild today.'' said a rugged adventurer A.

''Oh? Do share it with me.'' adventurer B was eager to learn more, whatever story it would be, he had the feeling it was going to be a juicy one. Therefore, he downed his mug of beer before asking for an encore, of course he did not forget to order another one for his friend, this way he tongue would loosen and he would spill everything.

Adventurer A's eyes shone, his licked his lips as his adam apple bobbled up down.

''Well, one of my friends who was at the guild this morning said an unusual couple walked in.'' he stopped there to build up tension and when his friend glared at him he chuckled before he continued.

''It was a truly an unusual couple, an angel and a demon. An unusual combination isn't it?"

Adventurer B's eyes widened, disbelief written all over his face, he had trouble believing what he had just heard.

Before he could ask for more, the atmosphere in the tavern turned chilly instantly as if they have been plunged into an ice cold lake, the killing intent coming from a certain direction was that absurd, so strong to alter reality.

All eyes turned into a certain direction, the previously quiet priest was now on his feet, his placid brown eyes were looking in the direction of the two adventurers who was gossiping.

''Care to go in detail my friend, may God blessing be with you.''

It was a suggestion more akin to an order, the others present lowered their eyes not daring to meet the priest in the eyes, no one wanted to deal with a lunatic, every one present know priest from the Holy church are lunatic, anything that goes against their faith was deemed heretic, so it must be purged.

The two adventurers, especially Adventurer A felt like smacking his former self for speaking so loud without checking his surrounding, he had forgotten about the priest who had just walked in a moment ago, just because he wished to drink more,he spoke without any care, now he would have to deal with the consequences. His friend quietly slipped away, leaving him alone.

The priest joined him on his table, he ordered some more beer, he asked him to tell him everything, so he did. Recounting all he heard, the priest thanked him before leaving the tavern, he went back to the Holy church asap. He had to tell the archbishop quickly and purge the demoness trying to lure a pure angel astray.

''Death to the heretic.'' he swore under his breath, his teeth clenched tightly.
