Chapter 1 - Awakening Ceremony

Kevin, a slave to a wealthy noble's son, finnaly has a chance to escape his fate.

Awakening day

"Kevin! Get your ass down here!" Grayson yells as he kicks Kevin. Kevin stumbles "Yes master?" He half mumbles "what was that slave?" Grayson emphasizes 'slave' as if it's a curse, which it is for Kevin."Yes master?" He says again, louder this time.

Grayson points to the carriage. "Get in, my family is forced to let you take the Awakeners test because of some stupid law."

Kevin stares at the carriage not believing his luck. At 18 all young adults are obligated to take the Awakeners test.

"And if I awaken I can finally escape this hell…" Kevin mutters "what did you say?" Grayson asked suspiciously not quite hearing what Kevin had said "nothing master" Kevin quickly replies

They arrive at the Awakening grounds where the 'Ancient Protector', who only looks about 24, waits for the candidates.

"I'm not as young as you think, looks are deceiving" Kevin suddenly hears in his ear. He turns around and the Protector is standing right behind him grinning faintly.

"S-sorry sir" Kevin stammers as he tries to figure out when the man appeared next to him. The Protector just smiles and says. "Once you get stronger all your questions will already be answered" he passes Kevin a simple stone. "I feel something off about you, don't tell your master or anyone I have you this. You'll know what it is when the time is right."

When Kevin looks back the man is already addressing the rest of the crowd

"Welcome all, to the Awakening ceremony" he says with a smile on his face

"Now" his voice turns deathly serious "orderly line or I won't be able to promise your awakening goes smoothly"

The threat worked a bit too well. The young men scramble and shove to get into an orderly line. But one decided he deserved better and tried to skip the line with a haughty expression

"Young man, get in line" the Protector says smiling.

The young man just scoffed and said "you don't know who you're messing with, my dad is…" he stops as the Guardian, still smiling, appears in front of him.

"What was that?" He asks while releasing his power causing the young man to stumble and fall in fear.

The Guardian's face turns stone cold and his voice echos in the young man's ears as he says "back of the line"

The young man gets launched into the air by an unseen force. He hits the ground at the back of the line unconscious.

"Let this be a warning, don't do anything stupid" the Guardian says cheerfully as the rest of the young adults stand in fear, their mouths dry.

"Ok, one at a time you will each touch the awakening crystal. Only about 10% of you will awaken, so don't get your hopes up." The Guardian says.

He continues "There are many classes, but each will have a rank from F-S with S being the highest talent. For those of you who did not know this, I'm disappointed."

"First person, go." The fist person in the line touches th crystal, nothing happens.

"Next" The Guardian calls. The second person hurriedly touches the crystal. Again, nothing.

All are the same until the eighth person. When he touched the crystal it glowed a dull red "Berserker, F-rank." The Guardian says dismissively.

Again, the crystal doesn't respond until the fourteenth person, an orphan girl. When the girl touched the crystal it glowed purple with flecks of red, it was brighter then the first boy but still not too bright.

"Fire Mage, D-rank." There was a short applause before the guardian called the next one up.

Kevin was 124th in line, it was the 102nd person's turn. So far 14 people have awakened, but no one got a rank higher than D-rank.

But when the 113th person, the belle of the town, went to touch the crystal it glowed a warm red-gold aura. "Impressive, dual awakening. Primary: Palidin, A-rank. Secondary: Warrior, B-rank. Good combination." The Guardian gave light praise.

Kevin watched as the one person who had ever been nice to him, even if it was only one time, get an excellent awakening. He couldn't help but smile for her.

It was Kevin's turn, he touched the small stone in his pocket that the guardian had given him wondering what it was.

Kevin silently walked up to the crystal and touched it. It glowed a dull green and the Gaurdian looked confused for a second but covered it up quickly "Healer, E-rank"

Everybody started whispering, there had never been an E-rank awakened ever recorded. Everyone just assumed it didn't exist and that D-rank was second lowest because nobody ever saw an E-rank.

The Guardian tapped his pocket and Kevin remembered the stone. He touched it in his pocket. Kevin suddenly saw some sort of holographic screen in front of him. He realized that the 'stone' wasn't a stone at all, it was an exceedingly rare soul scanner.

The soul scanner shows awakened who touch it their talent and additional info about it.
