CHAPTER 22 — "Bellyache"

"Bellyache" is one of Billie's most misunderstood songs.

On the outside, it sounds catchy, almost playful. But the lyrics?

They're dark.

The song tells a story about guilt — so strong it feels like a pain in your stomach. Billie wrote it as a character piece, imagining a girl who does something terrible and then feels the weight of regret hitting her afterward.

It's not literally about crime.

It's about what guilt does to a person, how it twists your thoughts and makes you feel sick, even when no one else knows what you've done.

Meaning:

"Bellyache" explores the feeling of being ashamed of your own actions. The "ache" represents emotional guilt, not physical pain. Billie said it was inspired by storytelling — creating a character who runs away from her problems and can't escape herself.

It showed the world that Billie's mind works in pictures, moods, and emotions, not just words.
