Chapter 54 - God Killer, Igor's Blade - The End Of Every Path. Pt1

before the last word had finished leaving him.

Suigōraku crossed the distance without spectacle. There was no roar of power and no warning in the air. The blade arrived at Dark's throat with the same quiet certainty Sereon had carried through every exchange before it, except the restraint behind that certainty had disappeared.

Kyuketsu rose.

The weapons struck, and the impact folded the air between them.

Dark's arm was driven downward. A violent pressure passed through his shoulder and split across his ribs, but he twisted with it instead of resisting. His body turned sideways, his cape snapping behind him as Kyuketsu slid along Suigōraku's edge. Dark brought his other hand forward, black material forming across his knuckles as he drove a punch toward Sereon's face.

Sereon tilted his head.

The fist passed close enough to move his hair.

His free hand caught Dark's wrist.

The direction of Dark's body changed.

Dark had been moving forward. One instant later, every part of that force belonged to the opposite direction. His spine bent as he was hurled backward through the sky, but a black tendril tore from his side and wrapped around a drifting section of broken stone. The debris cracked beneath the strain. Dark stopped, released it, and returned before Sereon could take more than a single step.

Kyuketsu came down toward Sereon's shoulder.

Sereon turned beneath it, Suigōraku rising across his body. The blades met again, and Dark felt the angle of his own attack shift beneath his grip. Kyuketsu was redirected away from Sereon and toward the empty space beside him.

Sereon passed through the opening.

Dark drove his knee into Sereon's side before he could move beyond him.

The blow landed hard enough to bend Sereon's body, but his hand closed around Dark's leg before the force could send him away. He pulled Dark across himself and drove Suigōraku toward his chest.

Dark twisted. The edge cut through his clothing and opened a line beneath his ribs, but missed his heart.

Blood scattered between them.

Neither man looked at it.

Dark brought Kyuketsu across from below. Sereon released him and drew back, the blade passing beneath his chin. The cut missed, but the pressure behind it tore through the distant clouds and divided them for miles.

Dark steadied himself in the open air.

Sereon did the same.

For several seconds, neither attacked.

Dark watched his eyes.

They were not fixed upon him.

Beyond Dark, Kurai's corpse continued to drift through the battlefield. His body turned slowly in the air, his chest split around the wound Igor had left behind. Blood moved away from him in dark, widening trails.

Farther beyond him stood Igor.

God Killer remained lowered beside his armored leg.

Sereon's gaze had passed over Dark three times during their exchange. Each glance had lasted less than a breath, but Dark understood what the attacks had been designed to do. Sereon had not been trying to overwhelm him.

He had been trying to remove him from the path.

Dark: You keep looking past me.

Sereon said nothing.

Dark raised Kyuketsu between them.

Dark: I am still here.

Sereon's eyes settled upon him properly.

Sereon: Move.

Dark: No.

Sereon: This is not your death.

Dark: You do not decide that.

Something changed in Sereon's expression. It was not anger in the way most people carried it. His face did not tighten. His breathing did not deepen. The calm remained complete, but it had become the calm of a blade after the hand holding it had stopped caring what the cut would destroy.

Sereon: Then I will remove you again.

He vanished from Dark's sight.

Dark turned before the strike arrived.

Suigōraku cut across Kyuketsu and forced it aside. Sereon's shoulder drove into Dark's chest, breaking the distance between them before Dark could recover the blade. Sereon caught the back of Dark's neck and pushed him downward through the air, then turned his body and released him.

Dark fell.

Sereon remained above him.

Influence moved through the space between them.

Dark's descent changed direction so violently that his body snapped sideways. He was thrown across the battlefield, through a rising wall of debris and beyond the space where the Champions had been scattered. Stone burst around him. Metal fragments struck his back and shoulders. One piece passed through his side before his body tore free of the wreckage.

Dark spread his arms and stopped himself.

By the time he looked back, Sereon was already moving toward Igor.

There was no rush in him now.

He crossed the open sky with Suigōraku held beside him, his attention fixed entirely upon the armored swordsman waiting beyond Kurai's body.

Igor did not raise God Killer.

He did not alter his posture.

The narrow crimson line within his helmet remained directed toward Sereon.

Sereon passed Kurai's corpse.

Then the color disappeared.

The battlefield remained exactly where it had been.

Dark was still far behind him. Kurai's body continued turning between them. The broken sky, drifting ruins, scattered weapons, and distant Champions remained in their places, but every surface had been stripped into black, white, and shades of lifeless grey.

Only the blood remained red.

A thin crimson line appeared across Sereon's throat.

Igor had not moved.

God Killer was still lowered beside him.

The line opened.

Warmth spread across Sereon's neck before the pain reached him. Blood poured down the front of his clothing in a vivid red sheet. His vision dropped without warning, the horizon turning as his head separated from his shoulders.

He saw his own body beneath him.

It remained upright for a moment, Suigōraku still held within its hand. Blood erupted from the severed neck and rose through the black-and-white air. Beyond the body stood Igor, unchanged, his sword in the exact position it had occupied before the cut appeared.

There had been no swing.

No step.

No movement at all.

Sereon's head continued falling.

The battlefield returned to color.

He was still moving toward Igor.

His throat was whole.

His body had not been wounded.

Sereon stopped.

His hand rose and pressed against his neck before he could prevent it. His fingers found unbroken skin, but the memory beneath them was exact. He remembered the division of muscle, the opening of the veins, the sudden absence of his body, and the slow rotation of his vision as his head fell through the air.

No one else had seen it.

Dark had only seen Sereon stop.

Igor remained motionless.

Sereon lowered his hand.

He changed his decision.

Rather than continuing forward, he turned Suigōraku toward Dark.

The color vanished again.

A red line opened from Sereon's left shoulder to his right hip.

Igor did not move.

Sereon's body separated along the cut. His upper half slid from the lower, blood spilling between both sections in a brilliant crimson arc while the same dead battlefield watched in black and white.

Color returned.

Sereon remained whole.

Suigōraku had not completed the turn.

For the first time since Kurai had fallen, the stillness around Sereon did not belong entirely to him.

His eyes moved toward Igor.

God Killer remained lowered.

Igor: Choose again.

Sereon chose again.

He allowed Suigōraku to remain where it was and shifted only his left shoulder, intending to pass around Igor without advancing upon him directly.

The color vanished.

A red line opened across Sereon's waist.

His upper body slid away from the lower half before the movement had begun. Blood poured between both sections while Igor remained exactly where he had been, God Killer lowered, his armored hand still resting at his side.

Color returned.

Sereon was whole.

He changed the angle of his body and considered forcing Igor behind him.

Black and white.

Both of Sereon's arms fell from his shoulders.

Color returned.

He considered striking the space beside Igor rather than Igor himself.

Black and white.

His chest opened from collar to stomach, the cut appearing without warning while his ribs separated beneath the skin.

Color returned.

He considered allowing Suigōraku to act without conscious direction.

Black and white.

His head left his shoulders.

Color returned.

Sereon's breathing remained quiet, but the memories no longer arrived separately. Severed hands, opened throats, divided spines, destroyed eyes, and bodies collapsing around wounds that had appeared without motion gathered inside him with perfect clarity. Every death retained its own pain. Every conclusion remained complete.

He did not retreat.

He did not advance.

His gaze remained fixed upon Igor while his thoughts changed shape behind his eyes.

Sereon separated movement from intention. He removed hostility from the decision. He considered approaching as though there were no enemy before him, no blade waiting, no outcome to correct.

The world became black and white.

A thin red line appeared beneath his jaw.

His head began to fall.

Color returned.

Sereon remained still.

Igor had not shifted once.

Not through any of it.

God Killer had not risen. The blade had not crossed the distance. The hand holding it had not tightened. Yet Sereon remembered being severed more times than the surrounding battlefield could have contained.

His fingers pressed briefly against Suigōraku's hilt.

Sereon: These are not warnings.

Igor said nothing.

Sereon looked at him through the narrow distance separating them.

Sereon: They are completed decisions.

Igor: Yes.

Sereon: Every path continues until it reaches you.

Igor: Every path you have chosen so far.

Sereon's eyes narrowed by the smallest amount.

Sereon: Then there remains one that has not.

Igor: Find it.

Sereon's attention moved through the battlefield again.

That was when he felt them.

There had been no arrival.

No rupture in the sky. No opening gate. No sound announcing that anything had changed.

Yet far beyond Dark, beyond the scattered Champions and the drifting remains of the battle, someone stood where no one had been before.

Enra.

His arms were crossed over his chest, his posture straight and unmoving. He did not look prepared to intervene. He did not look concerned that he might need to. Nothing surrounded him. No aura escaped his body, no pressure rolled outward, and no visible power disturbed the air.

The battlefield felt him anyway.

It was not force descending upon those below him. It was the awareness that something far above the war had chosen to look down at it.

A short distance beside him stood Lybel.

One hand rested upon the long katana sheathed at his waist. The other hung loosely at his side. His face carried the tired disinterest of a man who would rather have been anywhere else, though the fact that Enra had come appeared to be reason enough for him to remain.

Lybel's gaze passed over Sereon without stopping.

Another figure stood farther to the side.

Larthax.

He held his hands behind his back, his body relaxed, his attention quiet and exact. He watched without leaning forward or offering judgment. The space near him remained undisturbed, yet every movement across the battlefield seemed smaller beneath his notice.

Luther appeared next.

He stood with one arm lowered and the other hand resting lightly around the opposite wrist. His expression revealed nothing. He did not carry the stillness of patience or boredom. He looked as though he had already accepted that whatever occurred next would simply become another fact he had witnessed.

Axiom stood beyond him.

His head was slightly inclined, not toward Sereon, but toward Dark in the distance. His posture remained loose, almost ordinary, though nothing about the way the others left space around him felt accidental. He neither crossed his arms nor reached for a weapon. He merely watched with the calm of someone measuring what Dark would become before Dark himself understood it.

Then Sereon saw the largest among them.

Archanos stood farther away from the others.

He towered over every human figure in the sky, his enormous frame held motionless with both arms crossed over his chest. The armor covering him preserved the severe shape Dark had once known, but nothing about it now looked unfinished. Every plate sat with the certainty of something that had finally reached its intended form. It no longer appeared worn by a creature struggling to become greater than itself.

It belonged to him completely.

The horns rising from his head only deepened the size of his silhouette. His eyes remained fixed upon the battlefield, ancient and controlled, while the distance he maintained from the others made it clear that he stood among the True Emperors without trying to resemble any of them.

None of them had released anything.

No aura.

No Domain.

No declaration of power.

Still, the scattered Champions felt the difference. Bodies that had endured Sereon's pressure became rigid without understanding why. Breath shortened. Instincts sharpened. The battlefield did not shake beneath the True Emperors.

It became aware of them.

Sereon's gaze moved back toward Enra.

Only then did he notice the man standing a little beyond him.

Raiku.

There was no pressure around him at all.

Nothing within his presence demanded attention. Nothing warned the body, strained the soul, or disturbed the air. Had he stood alone among ordinary people, most would have believed him to be one of them.

His long golden-yellow hair fell freely behind him, smooth and full without appearing carefully arranged. It carried no glow, yet every strand caught the broken light with impossible balance, neither too bright nor dulled by the ruined sky. His features held a beauty too complete to become delicate and a calm too natural to become performance.

He did not stand above the others.

He did not stand beneath them.

He simply stood beside Enra, separated by a small distance, looking toward the battlefield with the quiet attention of a man who had come to understand rather than judge.

Sereon studied them one by one.

Enra.

Lybel.

Larthax.

Luther.

Axiom.

Archanos.

And Raiku, standing beyond every pressure while revealing none of his own.

None had drawn a weapon.

None had moved to aid Igor.

None had come closer to Sereon.

Their eyes were not upon Kurai's corpse.

They were not upon God Killer.

They were not even upon Sereon.

Every one of them was watching Dark.

To observe the one who calls himself the Seventh True Emperor. Trained by Enra.

Sereon understood the meaning immediately.

They had not gathered because of him. They had not come to prevent Kurai's death, challenge Igor, or contain what remained of the battlefield. They had come to see what Dark would do after everything around him had been stripped away.

Sereon turned from them.

His attention settled upon Igor again.

God Killer remained lowered, but the angle had changed. Igor's wrist had rotated slightly, bringing the blade's edge forward while the point remained beneath his waist. It was the smallest adjustment he had made since Mugen Dansai began, yet Sereon felt more danger in it than he had felt in every death the technique had shown him.

Sereon moved one foot forward.

The world remained in color.

No wound opened.

No completed death entered his memory.

Mugen Dansai was gone.

Sereon's eyes narrowed.

Igor disappeared.

God Killer struck Suigōraku before Sereon had fully raised it.

The collision produced no ordinary metallic sound. The impact detonated between the blades with a deep, violent crack that travelled across the open sky and shattered every loose fragment of stone within several miles. A circular wall of compressed air burst outward, swallowed Kurai's drifting blood, and hurled the remains of broken structures away from them.

Sereon's arm folded toward his chest.

God Killer continued descending.

Sereon shifted Suigōraku beneath the pressure and allowed the greatsword's weight to move past him. Influence entered the collision, taking the downward force and turning it sideways.

Igor released the pressure before Sereon could claim it.

The weight vanished from Suigōraku.

Sereon's redirection caught nothing.

Igor stepped inside the failed movement and drove the reinforced edge of his gauntlet into Sereon's mouth.

The strike broke Sereon's lip and turned his head. Blood crossed his cheek, but before Igor could follow, Sereon's hand caught the outer plate of his forearm.

The direction of Igor's body changed.

His shoulder was pulled forward while his lower body was forced backward, an attempt to divide his balance and tear him across two opposing movements.

Igor bent his front knee.

The distortion passed through him.

Instead of resisting either direction, he followed both for a fraction of a second, allowed his body to rotate between them, and brought God Killer around from behind his back.

Sereon released him and raised Suigōraku.

The blades collided again.

A black arc crossed a silver one.

The explosion split the clouds beneath them and drove a deep circular depression into the airborne ruins below. Stone collapsed inward, then erupted upward in thousands of fragments as the pressure returned from the center.

Igor moved through the debris without looking at it.

God Killer came from Sereon's right.

Suigōraku intercepted.

Igor's grip changed.

The greatsword stopped halfway through the collision and reversed against its own weight. The pommel struck Sereon beneath the ribs. Armor did not protect him because there was no armor there to protect. The impact entered directly, crushing flesh against bone and forcing blood through Sereon's mouth.

Sereon caught the pommel beneath his palm.

Ripple Redirect spread from the contact.

The force that had entered him returned through God Killer with greater weight, carrying the pain, the broken tissue, and the exact direction of Igor's strike back toward the hand that had delivered it.

Igor opened his fingers.

God Killer left his grip.

The returned force travelled into an empty hilt and threw the sword spinning through the sky.

Sereon's eyes followed it for less than an instant.

That was enough.

Igor's elbow struck his temple.

His knee entered Sereon's stomach before the first impact had finished moving through his skull. Igor caught the back of Sereon's clothing, turned with him, and threw him directly toward the spinning greatsword.

God Killer rotated once.

Igor appeared beside it and closed his hand around the hilt.

Sereon twisted in the air.

Suigōraku rose just as God Killer crossed toward his neck.

The blades met so close to Sereon's face that sparks burned across his cheek. The sound became a sustained metallic scream as both edges remained pressed together, each weapon vibrating beneath force that would have broken lesser steel into dust.

Sereon looked through the crossing blades.

Sereon: You released your weapon before the redirection completed.

Igor: Yes.

Sereon: You knew what I would return.

Igor: I knew what you wanted me to keep holding.

Sereon pushed Suigōraku outward.

Influence expanded from his body.

Every fragment of debris around them stopped.

Then all of it changed direction at once.

Stone, metal, shattered weapons, and entire sections of collapsed architecture converged upon Igor from every side. The sky disappeared behind the approaching mass.

Igor did not turn.

God Killer moved once.

One horizontal cut passed through the debris.

Nothing happened for a fraction of a second.

Then every object surrounding him separated along the same line. Mountains of broken material divided into clean halves, but the cut did not end after passing through them. It continued across the battlefield, opening the sky from one horizon to the other and leaving a narrow black separation where distance itself had been severed.

Sereon was already beneath him.

Suigōraku entered Igor's side.

The edge passed between two plates of black armor and cut deeply beneath the ribs. Blood ran along the silver blade.

Igor looked down at it.

Sereon twisted Suigōraku, intending to widen the wound and redirect the movement of Igor's organs around the blade.

Igor drove his forearm down.

His gauntlet struck the flat of Suigōraku hard enough to break the weapon's angle. The blade tore out of his side instead of cutting deeper. Igor turned with the damage, brought God Killer over his shoulder, and swung downward with both hands.

Sereon crossed Suigōraku above himself.

The impact drove him through the sky.

He fell faster than the shockwave surrounding him. Air ignited across his body, forming a white-red sheath of heat as he tore through one floating ruin, then another, then a third. Each structure exploded outward behind him while Igor descended through the paths Sereon's body had created.

Sereon stopped his own fall.

The entire direction of the battlefield inverted around him.

The fragments that had been falling began rising. Smoke poured upward in reverse. Flames folded back toward the ruins they had escaped. Igor's descent became an ascent without his body turning.

Sereon appeared above him.

Suigōraku cut downward.

Igor raised God Killer late.

Too late.

The silver edge entered the narrow crimson visor of his helmet.

The blade stopped.

Not against metal.

Against God Killer's crossguard, which Igor had rotated into the path at the final instant. The point of Suigōraku remained inside the visor, close enough to draw a thin line of blood across Igor's face.

Sereon pushed.

Igor tilted his head and allowed the point to pass beside his eye.

Then his helmet struck Sereon's forehead.

The impact sounded like a bell breaking inside a cathedral.

Sereon's head snapped backward.

Igor drove God Killer upward with one hand.

The blade tore across Sereon's chest, opened him from stomach to shoulder, and launched him through the inverted debris field. Blood followed in a long dark line.

Sereon corrected his movement before the wound could finish opening.

His body turned sideways.

The next strike from Igor passed through the space his spine had occupied.

Suigōraku came back across Igor's throat.

Igor leaned away.

The silver edge scraped across the lower front of his helmet and sent a trail of sparks into the air.

Sereon stepped closer.

Igor stepped closer with him.

Their shoulders struck.

Their swords became useless at that distance.

Sereon drove his forehead into Igor's visor. Igor answered with the side of his helmet. Sereon's knee struck the outside of Igor's thigh. Igor stamped against Sereon's ankle, folded his leg beneath him, and drove a gauntleted fist into the wound across Sereon's chest.

Blood erupted from Sereon's back.

Sereon caught Igor's arm with both hands.

Nami Shiyū moved through him.

Igor's entire body was redirected downward.

The open sky beneath him compressed into a single point.

Sereon released him.

Igor vanished into it.

The resulting explosion spread across the battlefield in a sphere of white pressure. Broken ruins disintegrated. Clouds vanished. The air expanded so violently that several distant Champions were pushed farther away despite the distance between them and the fight.

At the center of the detonation, Igor stopped.

His cape had been torn open. Blood ran from his side and beneath the edge of his helmet. Several plates along his left shoulder were fractured, but God Killer remained steady in his hand.

Sereon descended toward him.

Igor looked up.

The world remained in color.

Sereon slowed.

Only slightly.

Igor saw it.

He moved.

God Killer passed through Sereon's guard and struck his shoulder. Suigōraku arrived a fraction too late, deflecting the blade after it had already entered flesh. Igor turned the cut downward, splitting muscle from collar to upper arm, then pulled the sword free.

Sereon retreated three metres.

Igor followed.

Sereon expected the color to vanish.

It did not.

God Killer crossed toward his chest.

Suigōraku blocked.

Igor struck again.

Sereon redirected.

Igor allowed the motion to carry him around Sereon and attacked from behind.

Sereon turned and intercepted.

Their blades collided seven times in less than one breath. Each impact created a separate detonation, producing overlapping rings of pressure that tore through one another and filled the battlefield with repeated thunder. Black and silver lines crossed between them until neither body could be seen clearly within the explosions.

Sereon began reading the rhythm.

High cut.

Reverse.

Shoulder pressure.

Half-step inward.

Pommel toward the ribs.

Igor repeated it.

Once.

Twice.

On the third repetition, Sereon moved before the pommel arrived. He caught Igor's wrist, turned beneath God Killer, and drove Suigōraku backward toward the opening beneath Igor's arm.

Igor did not repeat the strike.

He released God Killer with his right hand, caught its blade with his armored left palm, and shortened the weapon into a close lever between them. The edge of the greatsword pressed against Suigōraku and forced it downward while Igor's right hand closed around Sereon's throat.

Igor threw him upward.

Then the color disappeared.

Sereon's body was still rising when God Killer passed through his spine.

The cut came from beneath him.

Igor had not moved from where he had thrown him.

Sereon's body separated through the center. His legs continued upward while his upper body fell, blood spreading between both halves in a red cloud.

Color returned.

Sereon was whole.

He was still in Igor's hand.

The memory of being divided struck him at the same moment Igor drove his fist into his sternum.

Bone broke.

Sereon flew backward.

Igor caught God Killer by the hilt before it could fall.

The world had returned to normal, but Sereon's body still remembered two contradictory events. His spine remembered separation. His chest remembered the physical strike that had actually landed. His balance attempted to respond to both.

Igor reached him before the conflict settled.

God Killer entered Sereon's abdomen.

The blade passed through him completely.

Sereon's hand closed around Igor's wrist.

Sereon: You ended it.

Igor: I paused it.

Sereon: And restored it when I adapted to its absence.

Igor: You did not adapt.

Igor pulled the blade upward.

Sereon twisted enough to keep the cut from reaching his heart, but the sword tore through his ribs and opened his chest. Blood covered the front of Igor's armor.

Igor: You became cautious.

Sereon drove his palm against Igor's chest.

Influence struck through the armor.

Igor's body travelled backward with enough force to tear a tunnel through the air. The pressure around him ignited, then burst as he struck a drifting section of black stone several miles away. The entire structure folded around him and collapsed into a dense sphere before exploding from within.

Igor emerged through the fire.

Sereon was already waiting.

Suigōraku struck God Killer.

The sky turned white.

The collision created a sound so deep that it moved through the bones of every living person across the battlefield. A vertical pillar of pressure erupted above and below them, extending beyond the visible World in both directions. The clouds beneath the battlefield separated into enormous spirals, while the ruins around them were reduced to glowing dust.

Sereon's wound remained open.

The flesh had begun drawing itself together, but it was not healing cleanly. Thin pale material formed beneath the blood, spreading between the separated ribs like the beginning of something that had not yet decided whether it was flesh, armor, or soul.

Igor saw it.

Sereon saw him see it.

A second pair of pale eyes opened beneath the skin near Sereon's collarbone.

They remained for less than a second before closing again.

Igor increased the pressure against Suigōraku.

Sereon redirected it downward.

Igor changed the angle before the force could settle.

Sereon changed with him.

Their blades moved again.

God Killer cut from above. Suigōraku turned it aside. Igor reversed toward the neck. Sereon stepped within the arc. Igor shortened his grip and attacked with the lower half of the blade. Sereon caught it against Suigōraku's guard, rotated beneath both weapons, and brought his elbow toward Igor's visor.

Igor caught the elbow.

Sereon changed the direction of the arm after it had been caught.

The joint bent the wrong way.

Igor released it before the bone could break, stepped into Sereon's chest, and drove his shoulder through him.

The impact detonated behind Sereon.

His body bent around Igor's armor.

Igor lifted God Killer for the killing cut.

Sereon's soul changed.

Not fully.

Not yet.

White lines moved beneath his skin. His body divided into several unfinished intentions without physically separating. One Sereon intended to retreat. One intended to redirect the blade. One intended to allow the strike to land. One had not decided at all.

Mugen Dansai activated.

The battlefield turned black and white.

Four Sereons died.

One lost his head.

One was split through the chest.

One was severed from shoulder to hip.

One remained untouched for a fraction of a second before a red line appeared through both eyes.

Color returned.

Sereon was still beneath God Killer.

But his body had moved somewhere none of the completed decisions had chosen.

The blade passed beside him.

Sereon's eyes widened slightly.

Igor's knee struck his face.

The impact shattered his nose and launched him upward through the pillar of white pressure.

Igor followed.

Sereon corrected his body and cut downward.

Igor blocked.

The collision burst across the upper sky.

Sereon attacked again.

Igor moved beneath it and opened another cut across his ribs.

Sereon turned the wound away, caught God Killer between Suigōraku and his palm, and redirected the entire greatsword toward Igor's own neck.

Igor let go.

Sereon's redirection threw God Killer away.

Igor stepped through the opening and punched him in the throat.

Sereon's breath stopped.

Igor caught him by the face.

Then he drove Sereon through the expanding explosion beneath them.

They crossed its center together.

Fire and compressed air tore around their bodies. Sereon struck Igor's side repeatedly with Suigōraku's hilt. Plates cracked. Igor's fingers remained locked across Sereon's face until they emerged from the opposite side of the detonation.

Igor released him.

God Killer returned from behind Sereon.

The greatsword had crossed miles of ruined sky after being thrown away. It arrived point-first through Sereon's back and burst from his chest.

Igor caught the hilt as the blade carried Sereon toward him.

For the first time, Sereon's calm broke enough to produce a sharp breath.

Igor pulled him closer along the blade.

Their faces stopped less than a metre apart.

Igor: You are trying to become unreadable.

Blood ran from Sereon's mouth and across God Killer.

Sereon: No.

The pale material beneath his wounds spread further.

A third eye opened along the side of his throat.

Sereon: I am becoming unfinished.

Igor twisted God Killer inside him.

Sereon's body shook.

Igor: Unfinished things still bleed.

Sereon raised Suigōraku.

The blade dissolved in his hand.

Silver spirit flowed across his arm, entered the wound around God Killer, and spread through his body in branching white lines.

The sound began quietly.

A distant metallic resonance.

Layered beneath it were voices too numerous to separate, each one unfinished, each one moving toward a conclusion it had never reached.

The white material beneath Sereon's skin pushed outward.

A thin plate formed across one side of his jaw.

Then another grew across his shoulder.

Igor pulled God Killer free and moved back before the transformation could close around the blade.

Blood poured from Sereon's chest.

The wound did not heal.

It changed its mind about what the damaged area was supposed to become.

Sereon lifted his head.

Two eyes remained human.

The third watched Igor from beneath the pale growth.

Sereon: Soul Ryūgu.

The resonance deepened.

Igor raised God Killer with both hands.

For the first time since their fight began, the point of the greatsword faced directly toward Sereon.

Dark moved before either of them could.

He appeared between the two swordsmen with Kyuketsu raised across his body. The white beneath his eyes remained steady, but black material had already spread along his wounded side and closed around the opening Sereon had left there.

Dark did not look at Kurai.

His attention remained on the blood running from Igor's armor, the fractures across his shoulder plates, and the thin line Suigōraku had carved beneath his visor.

Dark: Enough.

Igor did not lower God Killer.

Sereon remained several metres away, suspended within the open sky while the pale growth continued spreading beneath his skin. The unfinished plate across his jaw hardened, then softened again, unable to settle upon a final shape. The third eye along his throat remained open and fixed upon Igor.

Dark turned slightly toward his Champion.

Dark: You are wounded.

Igor: I remain capable.

Dark: That was not what I said.

Igor's hand left God Killer.

For a moment, Dark expected him to reach for the injury beneath his ribs.

Instead, Igor raised one armored palm toward him.

It was not an order.

It was a request.

Igor: My Emperor.

Dark's expression hardened.

Igor: Please leave this fight to me.

Dark: He is trying to kill you.

Igor: Yes.

Dark: That usually gives me a reason to interfere.

Igor: I killed the man he cared for.

The words crossed the battlefield without hesitation.

Sereon's face remained controlled, but the pale material beneath his wounds stopped moving.

Igor looked past Dark and toward him.

Igor: I had reason.

The narrow crimson line inside his visor did not change.

Igor: I would make the same decision again.

God Killer remained pointed toward Sereon.

Igor: But necessity does not erase consequence.

Dark stared at him.

Every instinct within Dark told him to remain where he was. Igor belonged beside him. Igor had chosen the Empire, carried its name, and stood between its people and threats that could have erased them without effort. Allowing Sereon to continue attacking him felt less like trust and more like negligence.

Yet forcing Igor away from a consequence he had willingly accepted would turn protection into something else.

Dark had spent too long speaking about choice to remove it the moment choice became uncomfortable.

Kyuketsu lowered.

Dark moved aside.

He did not leave the battlefield. He stopped several metres from Igor, close enough to intervene if the fight threatened everyone around them, but far enough that neither swordsman could mistake his decision.

Sereon watched him.

Sereon: You will allow this.

Dark: Igor asked me to.

Sereon: He murdered Kurai.

Dark's eyes moved toward the corpse for the first time.

Kurai continued drifting through the ruined sky. His limbs hung without tension, his head turned slightly away, and the wound through his sternum remained open around the path God Killer had taken through him.

Dark looked for several seconds.

Nothing inside him mourned.

Dark: I did not know him.

Sereon's fingers tightened around Suigōraku.

Dark: I knew the woman he murdered for less than a minute.

Sereon's gaze sharpened.

Dark: She had no weapon. No army. No strength worth proving himself against.

The memory returned without invitation. A mother standing between Kurai and her child. A body ruined because someone powerful had decided fear was not enough. A child left staring at what remained because a man who could have fought almost anyone had chosen someone incapable of surviving him.

Dark: His final choice was to kill someone weaker than him because he could.

Sereon: You reduce his entire life to one act.

Dark looked directly at him.

Dark: No.

The answer carried no anger.

Dark: I refuse to erase that act because you loved him.

The calm on Sereon's face thinned.

Not enough to disappear.

Enough to reveal what it had been containing.

Sereon: You know nothing of what I felt for him.

Dark: Correct.

Dark's grip tightened around Kyuketsu.

Dark: And you know nothing about the woman he killed.

Neither spoke.

The battlefield remained silent around them, though thousands of fragments continued drifting through the open air. Beyond the conflict, the True Emperors watched without moving. Raiku's expression carried no judgment, but his attention rested upon Dark longer than before.

Igor stepped past him.

God Killer remained aimed toward Sereon.

Igor: Move Kurai's body.

Sereon's eyes shifted toward him.

Igor: This fight will not preserve it.

Sereon: You do not speak his name as though you respected him.

Igor: I did not.

Sereon's spiritual pressure changed.

The white lines beneath his body spread into his right arm. Suigōraku reformed within his hand, its silver edge appearing from the branching light as though the sword had grown directly from his bones.

Sereon: Then do not pretend concern now.

Igor: I am not concerned for him.

Igor adjusted God Killer's point.

Igor: I am giving you the opportunity to decide whether your grief requires his corpse to be destroyed beside you.

Sereon vanished.

Suigōraku reached Igor's throat.

God Killer turned.

The blades collided, but the sound came from behind Igor.

A second Sereon stood there.

His sword passed through the gap beneath Igor's damaged shoulder plate and entered the living darkness beneath it.

The Sereon in front of Igor disappeared.

Igor drove his elbow backward.

It passed through the second body.

A third appeared above him.

Suigōraku descended through Igor's collar and split his armor open to the chest.

The world remained in color.

No Mugen Dansai answered.

Igor fell through the air while blackness poured from the cut in place of ordinary flesh. Thin crimson lines moved within the shadow, gathering around the wound and pulling both divided sides back together.

Sereon followed.

Six versions of him descended at different angles.

Each carried Suigōraku.

Each possessed weight, breath, intent, and the slight disturbance created by a body moving through open air.

Igor closed the crimson light within his visor.

The world disappeared from his sight.

He listened.

Every Sereon produced the same movement.

Igor stopped listening.

The first sword reached him from the left.

God Killer intercepted it.

The body holding the weapon vanished at contact.

The second attacked from below.

Igor allowed the blade to enter his side.

The moment Suigōraku met resistance, he knew which body had committed to the strike.

His armored hand closed around Sereon's wrist.

Igor turned.

God Killer crossed toward Sereon's neck.

Sereon redirected the arm holding it.

The greatsword turned toward Igor's own head.

Igor released Sereon's wrist and let the forced movement carry him into a full rotation. His cape wrapped around both bodies. Sereon lost sight of the blade for less than a fraction of a second.

The pommel struck his jaw.

His teeth closed through the inside of his cheek.

Before the blood left his mouth, Igor caught him behind the neck and drove his forehead into Sereon's face.

The impact broke Sereon's nose again.

Igor pulled away and swung God Killer.

Sereon raised Suigōraku.

The blades met.

The explosion erased every false body surrounding them.

Sereon's blood crossed his lips and scattered against Igor's armor.

Igor: You changed the evidence.

Sereon pushed against God Killer.

Sereon: I changed what you trusted.

Igor: Sight.

Their weapons separated.

Igor attacked from above.

Sereon turned the strike aside.

Igor: Sound.

God Killer reversed.

Sereon bent beneath it.

Igor: Spiritual presence.

Sereon's elbow struck the fracture beneath Igor's shoulder.

Armor broke inward.

Igor did not react.

He brought his knee into Sereon's stomach.

Igor: Intention.

The impact folded Sereon's body.

Igor caught the back of his head and pulled him downward while lifting God Killer with his other hand.

The greatsword entered Sereon's chest.

Sereon's body became empty clothing around the blade.

Igor felt the absence.

A hand touched the back of his helmet.

The direction of his body changed.

He was thrown toward Kurai's corpse.

Igor rotated during the movement and planted God Killer's edge into the empty sky. The sword stopped as though it had struck a solid wall. His body swung around the fixed weapon and passed beneath Kurai without touching him.

Sereon appeared above the corpse.

Igor looked at him through the reopened crimson visor.

Igor: You moved me toward him.

Sereon: You asked that he be protected.

Igor: I asked you to move him.

Sereon: You killed him.

Igor: Yes.

The answer landed harder than denial would have.

Sereon's expression tightened.

Igor: I am not going to lie so your anger has an easier shape.

Sereon lifted one hand.

Influence reached Kurai.

The corpse stopped turning.

For several seconds, Sereon simply held him there.

The wound in Kurai's chest faced him directly. His eyes remained partly open, but nothing lived behind them. The blood surrounding him had thinned into suspended trails, each one marking how long the body had been abandoned to the movement of the battlefield.

Sereon's fingers closed.

The space behind Kurai folded without violence.

His body disappeared into it.

No grave was visible.

No sanctuary appeared.

Kurai was simply removed from the path of the next collision.

Sereon lowered his hand.

Igor: Thank you.

Sereon's eyes returned to him.

Sereon: Do not thank me.

Igor: I was not thanking you for him.

God Killer rose.

Igor: I was thanking you for making a decision before grief made it for you.

Sereon attacked.

This time there were no copies.

Suigōraku crossed the distance with both hands around its hilt. Igor met it directly, and the collision drove them away from each other. Sereon stopped first. His body changed direction and returned along the same line before Igor had recovered.
