The side gate was lit.
That was the first thing Matt noticed as he followed Yvonne through the cemetery, staying in the shadows, keeping his distance. The gate was never lit at this hour, it was a deliberate action so that the guards' night vision wouldn't be compromised. But tonight, someone had hung a lantern from the iron bars, casting a pool of warm light onto the gravel below.
And standing in that pool of light, his arms crossed, his gray eyes cold, was Arne.
Yvonne stopped so abruptly that she nearly stumbled. Her hood fell back, revealing her platinum hair, her pale face, her wide eyes.
"Father," she said. Her voice was steady, but Matt could hear the tremor beneath it. "You're up "
"I could say the same. Besides we're Nightbournes for a reason." Arne didn't move. Didn't uncross his arms. "Where have you been?"
Yvonne lifted her chin. "Out."
"Out where?"
"Does it matter?"
