Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

The streets of Astraea were quieter at night, though far from silent. Lanterns floated above cobblestone paths, casting pools of golden light. Mana currents hummed faintly in the air, tracing invisible networks of power that connected guilds, towers, and every mage's hearth.

Ethan walked through the lower district, his cloak pulled tight around his shoulders, muscles still aching from his first battle. His pulse had finally slowed, but adrenaline lingered like an electric charge under his skin. The sewer anomaly and the battle with the Corrupted Mana Croc were now memories, but their effects were tangible: a new edge to his flames, a raw power humming in every cell of his body.

He didn't notice at first, but eyes were on him.

1. The Silent Watcher

From the shadows of a broken rooftop above, a figure observed Ethan. Clad in dark robes, the mage's presence radiated authority—raw, controlled, and cold. A faint aura of mana brushed the surrounding air, bending it slightly toward the observer's will.

"Interesting," the figure murmured. Their voice was calm, deliberate, yet sharp enough to slice through any sense of safety. "An apprentice surviving a Corrupted Mana anomaly alone… and not just surviving—he absorbed the core."

The figure's eyes glinted beneath the hood, analyzing every detail: posture, breathing, mana flow, even subconscious hand gestures.

"Most would have perished… or gone mad," the mage whispered, almost to themselves. "Yet his control… extraordinary. Not innate talent, either. Trained, perfected… artificially amplified."

The observer chuckled softly, a sound without warmth. "I should take note. He could become… useful."

2. Ethan's Return to the Guild

Meanwhile, Ethan returned to the Verdantbrook Mage Guild, exhausted but exhilarated. His limbs ached, but his mind buzzed with possibilities. He had just faced his first real-life trial outside the simulation—and he had won.

Apprentices passed by, whispering and pointing at him. A few nodded respectfully.

"Looks like you survived the anomaly," Lyra said, approaching him with a smirk. "Barely."

"I did more than survive," Ethan replied, flexing his fingers. Small sparks of fire danced at his fingertips, contained but potent. "I upgraded my flame affinity."

Lyra's eyes widened slightly. "Wait… already? That's… insane. Most apprentices would be burnt to ash before reaching that core."

Ethan shrugged, trying to hide the thrill coursing through him. "I guess I got lucky."

3. Rumors in the Guild

The guild hall was alive with chatter. Apprentices exchanged rumors of the anomaly, the Corrupted Mana Croc, and now—an apprentice who had faced it alone.

One student whispered, "I heard someone took down a C-Rank mutant in the lower tunnels!"

"Impossible," another replied. "Only Adepts and above can survive that."

Ethan ignored them. He didn't need approval; he needed growth. But the whispers mattered. He had drawn attention. And in a city of mages, attention could be both an opportunity and a threat.

4. The Observer's Approach

That night, after guild activities wound down, Ethan felt a sudden shift in the air. The temperature dropped, and a strange stillness overtook the courtyard outside his temporary lodging.

A figure stepped from the shadows: the same one who had watched him from above earlier. Cloaked, with an aura of restrained power, they moved as if they didn't need to walk—yet their steps made no sound.

Ethan tensed instinctively. The figure raised a hand, and the mana in the area pulsed in waves, a quiet but undeniable demonstration of power.

"You survived today," the figure said calmly. No anger, no amusement. Just observation. "Few apprentices could even touch that anomaly, let alone emerge stronger."

Ethan straightened. "Who are you?"

The figure inclined their head slightly. "Consider me… a curious student of the world. You have something most do not: control and adaptability beyond your current realm. That makes you interesting. Dangerous. And potentially useful."

Ethan's brow furrowed. "Useful how?"

The figure's eyes, faintly glowing, scanned him from head to toe. "The world is shifting. Conflicts rise, and kingdoms will demand champions. I study such shifts. And you… you are a variable worth noting."

Ethan tried to hide his unease. He had survived simulations, anomalies, and death traps—but a Higher Mage evaluating him like this was… intimidating.

"I see," he said cautiously. "And if I refuse to be… your variable?"

The figure chuckled softly, almost like a wind through trees. "Refusal is an option. But understand this: powerful forces notice nothing less than potential. You cannot remain invisible."

With that, they melted back into the shadows, leaving only a faint trace of cold mana and a lingering question in Ethan's mind.

5. Reflection and Strategy

Ethan sat on a rooftop, staring at the guild towers silhouetted against the night sky.

He thought back to the simulator: decades of experience compressed into weeks, the techniques he retained, and now the unexpected surge from the anomaly. He was stronger—but not untouchable.

He recalled the Higher Mage's words: "You cannot remain invisible."

That meant two things:

Someone powerful had seen him.

That someone might be watching, testing, or manipulating him.

He clenched his fists, feeling the warmth of his flame affinity inside him. The Ember Surge had stabilized; his mana core was solid, but his body was still at Apprentice tier. He was dangerous—but still underpowered compared to the real threats of Astraea.

Ethan exhaled. "Fine. Let them watch. Let them test. I'll prove I'm not just some weakling who stumbled into luck. I'll grow stronger… faster than anyone expects."

He scanned the city below. Lights flickered, floating platforms moved lazily, and somewhere in the distance, a fire-lit street echoed the hum of a new world alive with opportunity—and danger.

Every alley, every rooftop, every shadow could hide a friend—or an enemy.

But Ethan smiled. This was exactly what he wanted. The real world was unpredictable. Brutal. And alive.

Perfect for a wizard like him.

6. A New Goal Emerges

The Simulator pulsed softly in his mind, a reminder of the coming week:

[Next Simulation Available in 5 days, 18 hours, 42 minutes]Opportunity to expand skills, refine techniques, and explore potential paths.

Ethan closed his eyes, feeling the raw power in his veins. The Corrupted Mana Anomaly had been his first real test—and he had survived. A Higher Mage had noticed him.

He opened his eyes, flames sparking faintly at his fingertips.

"One battle isn't enough," he whispered. "I'll fight. I'll learn. I'll grow. And when the next simulation comes… I'll be ready for whatever comes after."

For the first time, he felt the weight of the world—and the thrill of its endless possibilities.

And somewhere, unseen in the shadows, the observer smiled.

"Interesting. He truly is… extraordinary."

Ethan didn't notice. But the first thread of fate had entwined him with a Higher Mage—a figure who could become either his greatest ally… or his deadliest enemy.
