Chapter 102 — The Second Passage
S.C. 1510 — Late December
Hidden Island — Eastern Cliff Base
Morning mist draped the island like a soft blanket when Ren's little boat nudged against the sand.
Zemo leapt out first, shaking his paws dramatically, as if seawater was personally offending him.
Ren stepped out more calmly, carrying:
a bundle of KEA tools
a bag of dried fish and apples
and the quiet determination of someone about to spend hours hitting rocks
Today's mission was simple… in theory:
Create a second passage.
Not a grand tunnel.
Not a secret hall.
Just a small escape route and ventilation shaft.
Small.
Hidden.
Life-saving.
Ren rested the tools on the sand.
"Zemo, ready?"
Bark.
Good enough.
---
Why Dig a Second Passage?
Ren glanced toward the main entrance—perfectly hidden behind vines and bushes.
Hidden didn't mean safe forever.
"One entrance is a risk," he murmured. "If something collapses… or if someone finds it…"
He scanned the cliff carefully.
Up a slanted path.
Behind thick shrubs.
Low visibility.
Protected from the wind.
There—a natural indentation in the rock, exactly what he needed.
Zemo squeezed into the bushes and poked his head out triumphantly.
Ren nodded.
"That spot works."
---
Step 1 — Marking the Future Doorway
Ren took out a charcoal stick and drew four important lines on the rock:
Top → ceiling
Bottom → floor
Left → boundary
Right → boundary
Just enough for:
fresh air
an escape route
and a fox who insisted on coming everywhere
Zemo tapped the bottom line with his paw as if inspecting the blueprint.
Ren laughed.
"It's small on purpose. No giants allowed."
---
Step 2 — First Strike: The Wall Meets KEA
Ren gripped the mini pickaxe.
Deep breath.
Steady stance.
CRACK.
A chunk of stone popped off cleanly.
Zemo flinched, then wagged his tail fiercely, as if Ren had defeated a great enemy.
CRACK—CRACK—CRACK
Ren's strikes grew steady.
Measured.
Consistent.
The KEA metal bit into the cliff almost eagerly.
A shallow dent appeared—
the beginning of the passage.
Ren wiped his forehead.
"That's one small dent… but one giant step toward safety."
Zemo looked unimpressed at the quote but supportive of the dent.
---
Step 3 — Polishing the Edges
Time for the chisel.
SCRRK— SCRRK—
Thin ribbons of stone fell like curled bark.
Zemo sniffed one, instantly sneezed, and backed away dramatically.
Ren grinned.
"Dust isn't a snack. I promise."
Zemo shot him an offended look and sat farther away.
---
Step 4 — Measuring the Connection Point
Ren crawled into the main chamber.
Inside, he located the wall section that should connect to the new passage.
He measured distance, estimated angle, tapped the wall a few times.
Zemo, waiting in the entrance, watched like a tiny construction manager.
Ren marked the interior with charcoal.
"Two points… meet in the middle. Easy to say, hard to do."
He picked up the pickaxe again.
CRACK.
CRACK.
CRACK.
The interior side slowly deepened.
---
Step 5 — The Moment the Air Arrived
Hours later, Ren swung the pick again—
CRACK—THUD—WHOOSH—
A cool gust of ocean air puffed straight into the chamber.
Ren froze.
Then smiled slowly.
"…Breakthrough."
Zemo dashed through the new gap with a burst of excitement, disappearing outside—
then reappearing inside—
then outside—
then inside again.
Ren laughed.
"That's the official fox approval test."
---
Step 6 — Reinforcement Time
Ren brought in the wooden beams he pre-cut.
He slid them into carved slots and tied them firmly with rope.
He tested each beam:
TOK— TOK.
Solid.
Inside the passage, the beams created a stable frame.
Outside, Ren arranged branches and leaves until the entrance blended perfectly into the shrub line.
No exposed wood.
No suspicious shadows.
Just nature being nature.
"Perfect," Ren whispered.
---
Step 7 — Naming the Secret Door
Zemo sat proudly next to the new entrance like he owned it.
Ren crossed his arms thoughtfully.
"This will be our… backdoor."
Zemo barked like he'd been waiting for the naming ceremony all day.
---
End-of-Day Calm
Ren sat on the beach at sunset, Zemo curled beside him.
The sky burned orange and pink.
Waves whispered against the shore.
Ren stared at the cliff, where two hidden doors now existed.
"We're building something real," he murmured.
"Quiet. Safe. Strong."
Zemo leaned against him, warm and content.
The second passage was small—
but every small thing brought Ren one step closer to a future no one else could imagine.
