Dane's POV:
Everything feels slightly delayed, like my body is moving on instinct while my mind is still stuck back in the kitchen, back in the sound of glass exploding, back in Rain's scream.
"Captain— we are here. You need to get on the gurney."
Jake's voice cuts through the ringing in my ears.
He's standing outside the hospital entrance, the cold air curling off his breath, his face tight with that controlled panic only I can read.
Rain presses into me harder at his words, her arms tightening around my neck, her cheek digging into the side of my throat like she's trying to burrow into me.
The dark blanket is wrapped around us both, heavy and warm, sealing my body to her.
Only if I could permanently glue myself to her.
"No," I say, firm.
"I'll walk in."
My shoulder throbs in time with my heartbeat. It's not just pain.
It's pressure.
Like my skin is holding something sharp and wrong inside it.
