Lin closed the book of the five continents with a soft thud, the leather cover settling against the stone floor like a satisfied sigh. His gaze, sharp and gleaming with the hunger of a mind that had just feasted on a feast of knowledge, shifted to the next volume in the pile.
The title was simple, almost understated:SOVEREIGNS
But the word itself carried weight a gravity that pulled at Lin's consciousness like the pull of a black hole. He had heard it whispered in the halls of Dove Peak, had felt its echo in the reverence of disciples, had seen the way even the Peak Lord's gaze grew distant when she spoke of such beings.
Sovereigns.
The pinnacle. The apex. The figures who stood at the very edge of mortal cultivation, their feet dangling over the abyss of ascension, their eyes fixed on a horizon that ordinary cultivators could not even perceive.
Lin's fingers trembled slightly as he reached for the book. He steadied them with an act of will, forcing his body to obey the commands of his mind. He was a cultivator. He had stood before a elder and refused to kneel. He would not be intimidated by a book.
He opened the first page.
The text was written in gold not ink that had been dyed or painted, but actual gold, as if the words themselves were forged from precious metal. They shimmered in the dim light of the cave, catching the sunbeams that pierced through the ceiling and throwing them back in fragments of amber and light.
The first words hit him like a physical blow.
There are two types of the art of Dao.
1. Physical—the art of the dantian (martial arts).
2. Soul—the art of alchemy.
Lin read the words again, slower this time. The terminology was simple deceptively so but the implications were staggering.
Two arts, he thought. Two paths to power. Two ways to climb the mountain of cultivation.
Physical,Soul.
Martial arts,Alchemy
He continued reading, his mind absorbing each sentence like a sponge absorbing water.
These two are the rhythms of heaven and earth the complementary forces that govern all existence. While one uses qi to attack the physical body, the other reaches deeper, striking at the very essence of being.
One cuts flesh. The other cuts spirit.
Lin felt a chill run down his spine.
He read on.
Everyone in the mortal world can become a martial artist, the book stated, its gold text gleaming with an almost smug certainty. As long as you can create a dantian as long as you can gather and compress qi into a stable vessel you have taken the first step on the path of martial cultivation.
But not everyone can become an alchemist.
Lin's eyes narrowed.
In the art of alchemy, there is no dantian. There is no vessel. There is no convenient container to hold and shape the energy of the soul. All there is... is the soul itself.
So how does one become an alchemist?
The book paused, as if savoring the question.
Everyone has this question. But is there an answer?
Probably not.
Lin felt his grip tighten on the book's edges. The casual dismissal of the question was almost offensive but it was also intriguing. If even the books did not know the answer, then the secret was genuinely hidden. Genuinely profound.
But it is theorized, the book continued, that we do not choose to become alchemists. The art of the Dao chooses us.
Lin's breath caught.
The Dao... chooses?
The concept was alien to him. In his past life, everything had been a matter of choice or at least, a matter of circumstance disguised as choice. He had chosen to die. He had chosen to accept the god's offer of rebirth.
But this... this was different.
This was not a choice.
This was a selection.
Thus, the book concluded, alchemists are considered a rare treasure to every race. They cannot be created. They cannot be trained. They can only be discovered and once discovered, they must be protected, nurtured.
Lin set the book down for a moment, letting the information settle into his mind.
Alchemists, he thought. The chosen ones. The rare treasures of the world
Lin turned the page.
There are twelve levels of soul cultivation, the book stated. The more powerful your soul, the more powerful the alchemist you can become.
Each level represents a higher degree of refinement, a deeper understanding of the nature of existence, a more profound connection to the rhythms of the Dao.
Lin read the list carefully, memorizing the terms.
The first six levels were basic the foundation upon which all soul cultivation was built. The seventh through tenth were advanced, requiring years of dedicated practice and a natural affinity for the art. The eleventh and twelfth... the eleventh and twelfth were the realms of master's
And the most unique part of soul cultivation, the book added, is that every alchemist in the world has a different way to cultivate their soul.
Lin blinked.
Different?
Yes, the book confirmed. When a normal soul becomes an ALCA—a soul that has awakened to the art of alchemy—it imprints a unique method of cultivation into the mind of its owner. No two alchemists follow the same path. No two methods are identical.
This is why alchemists are so valuable... and so dangerous. They cannot be taught. They cannot be replicated. They can only be... discovered.
Lin felt a bead of sweat roll down his temple.
An ALCA, he thought. A soul that has awakened to the art of alchemy. A soul that chooses its own path.
He read the rest of the passage in silence, his mind racing with the implications. If every alchemist had a unique method of cultivation, then understanding the art was impossible not because it was difficult, but because it was individual. Each alchemist was a world unto themselves, their cultivation a private language that no one else could fully comprehend.
Alchemists, he thought, are truly terrifying.
And this was the reason why no one talked about them. This was why the Peak Lord had never mentioned alchemy in his presence, why the sect's teachings focused exclusively on martial cultivation.
There is no point in discussing alchemy, he realized, until one is chosen.
Because until then...
He turned the page, his fingers trembling slightly.
...it is irrelevant.
The heading on the next page was written in letters so large that they filled the entire page:
WHO ARE THE SOVEREIGNS?
AND WHY ARE THEY CALLED SOVEREIGNS?
Below it, in smaller but no less golden text, the explanation began.
The title of Sovereign is not given it is earned. It is not a rank that can be bestowed by a sect leader or an emperor. It is a state of being that must be achieved through the complete mastery of one's chosen art.
Lin leaned forward, his eyes hungry for the words.
There are three types of Sovereigns.
1. Martial Sovereigns
2. Alchemist Sovereigns
3. Dual Sovereigns
He read the first category with growing awe.
1.Martial Sovereigns
Martial Sovereigns are beings who have achieved absolute understanding of the art of martial cultivation. Their control of qi is peerless, their understanding of its nature so profound that they can bend it to their will with a thought.
They alone have the power to level a continent.
Lin's hands trembled slightly. A continent. He had just read about continents vast landmasses that contained entire civilizations, entire races, entire worlds. And a single Martial Sovereign could destroy one.
Their mastery of techniques has reached a state that cannot be further mastered, the book continued. They have pushed their arts to the absolute limit, refining them until there is no room for improvement, no path for further growth.
They are, in every sense of the word, sovereign over their chosen domain.
Lin thought about the First Elder, whose qi pressure had felt like a mountain falling. And then he thought about what it would mean to face a Martial Sovereign a being whose qi pressure could level continents, whose techniques were perfected beyond mortal understanding, whose very presence was a weapon.
The First Elder, he thought, is nothing compared to them. Less than nothing.
The perspective was humbling.
2.Alchemist Sovereigns
The next section was written in slightly darker gold, as if the ink itself was reluctant to describe what it contained.
Alchemist Sovereigns are beings who have achieved the highest level of soul cultivation who have broken the shackles of the mortal realm and stepped into the thirteenth realm of souls.
Lin's eyes widened. The book had said there were twelve levels of soul cultivation. But the Sovereigns had reached thirteen.
They can erase consciousness with a single gaze, the book stated, its words cold and clinical. They can place an opponent into an illusion so real that death within it becomes death in reality. They can touch the soul itself and, if they wish, destroy it.
There is a phrase among cultivators: "Alchemists are those who kill without a single cut."
It means that they do not need to attack your body. They do not need to touch your flesh. All they need is your soul and once your soul dies, your body becomes nothing more than a hollow shell.
Lin sat frozen, his mind struggling to process the information.
An illusion so real that death within it becomes death in reality, he thought. A gaze that can erase consciousness. A soul that can destroy another soul without leaving a mark on the flesh.
He had thought Martial Sovereigns were terrifying. But Alchemist Sovereigns...
Alchemist Sovereigns were horrifying.
The thought was both terrifying and exhilarating.
Lin's hand trembled as he turned the page.
The final section was the shortest, but the words were written in gold so bright that they seemed to burn.
DUAL SOVEREIGNS
There are legends in this world. There are myths. There are beings so powerful that their names are spoken only in whispers, their existence doubted by those who have never seen them.
the Dual Sovereigns.
Lin felt his heart rate quicken.
Dual Sovereigns are beings who have achieved the absolute peak of both martial and alchemical cultivation. They are masters of the physical and the spiritual, sovereigns of body and soul.
They are the rarest of the rare the kind of figures that appear once in a millennium, if that. Their power is so profound that even other Sovereigns approach them with caution.
There are only two Dual Sovereigns in the current era.
Lin stopped breathing.
Both are from the human continent.
The book did not name them. It did not describe their techniques or their feats. It simply stated their existence and let the weight of that statement speak for itself.
Lin closed the book slowly, his hands steady despite the storm of emotions raging within him.
Two Dual Sovereigns, he thought. Two human beings who have achieved what no one else in the world has achieved.
And I am from the human continent.
I am part of their race.
I share their blood.
And one day...
He stopped himself, forcing his mind to quiet. Ambition was a double-edged swordit could drive you to greatness, or it could cut you down before you reached your first milestone. He had seen what happened to those who reached too high too quickly.
He would not make that mistake.
But even as he suppressed his ambition, a small ember of hope flickered in his chest.
One day, he thought, I will understand what it means to be a Sovereign.
One day, I will stand at the peak.
One day...
He looked at the pile of books before him volumes that had opened his eyes to the vastness of the world.
And he smiled.
To be continued....
