Chapter 36 - .

School doesn't feel like school anymore.

It feels like a stage.

Aurora's laugh carries down the hallway before anyone sees her. It's light, careless. The kind that turns heads.

Jason hears it and freezes.

She appears beside his locker like she belongs there, leaning casually, eyes bright. "So this is where you disappear to."

He blinks. "You followed me?"

She shrugs. "You didn't tell me not to."

From down the hall, Summer stops mid-sentence. "Oh nah."

Zyren peers over her shoulder. "Is that crash-girl?"

Lyrelle slows. Kaida stops completely.

Kyra whispers, "Jason…"

Aurora notices them staring and waves again, unfazed. "Your friends look fun."

Jason laughs awkwardly. "They're… a lot."

Summer cups her hands around her mouth. "WE CAN HEAR YOU."

Aurora laughs louder. Jason laughs too.

That's when Kaida's phone vibrates.

Once.

She doesn't touch it.

In class, Lyrelle can't focus. Prince sits beside her, arm brushing hers, grounding her. She leans into him instinctively, whispering something that makes him smile. For a second, everything else fades.

Kyra watches them from across the room.

Her pen snaps.

Jake glances over. She forces a smile. He squeezes her knee under the desk. She exhales.

Behind them, Ryan's phone lights up.

Unknown number.

"You think you escaped consequences."

His jaw tightens. He types back slowly.

Try me.

The reply comes immediately.

"AFTER SCHOOL."

He locks his phone and stares at the board like it might fight back.

At lunch, the girls sit together again. Four trays. One empty space they never fill.

Summer pokes at her food. "Saph would've roasted this rice."

Lyrelle snorts softly. "She'd say it tastes like disappointment."

Kyra smiles, then looks down quickly.

Kaida watches them all, silent.

Jason approaches with his tray. Aurora follows, uninvited, plopping down beside him.

"Hope you don't mind," she says cheerfully. "I hate eating alone."

The table goes quiet.

Summer smiles sweetly. Too sweet. "We do."

Aurora laughs, unbothered. "You're funny."

"I know," Summer says. "I try."

Zyren bites his lip to stop himself from laughing.

Prince leans toward Lyrelle. "She's going to start something."

Lyrelle murmurs back, "She already did."

Kaida's phone lights up on the table.

This time, everyone sees.

"ATTENTION SHIFT DETECTED."

Jason stiffens.

Aurora tilts her head. "Cool wallpaper."

Kaida flips the phone face-down.

Too late.

Another buzz.

"WHEN LOYALTY WANDERS."

"THE GAME ADJUSTS."

Summer lets out a sharp laugh. "Okay but why does it sound jealous."

Zyren grins. "You saying the game has feelings now?"

Aurora blinks. "Game?"

Jason opens his mouth.

Kaida stands. "We need to go."

Now.

After school, the group waits by the gate.

Ryan paces. His phone buzzes again.

"BEHIND THE GYM."

Prince notices. "You good?"

Ryan nods. Lies easy. "Yeah."

Summer catches Zyren's sleeve. "Walk me."

He does. Of course he does.

They stop under the bleachers. Quiet. Wind rustling wrappers and secrets.

"You jealous?" Zyren asks lightly.

She scoffs. "Of who?"

He steps closer. "You tell me."

She hesitates. Then laughs. "You wish."

But her hand grips his hoodie.

He kisses her. This time, it's not playful. It's real. She melts into it before pulling back, breathless.

"Don't make promises," she warns.

He smirks softly. "I don't break the ones I mean."

Her phone buzzes.

Both of theirs do.

"UNRESOLVED DESIRE."

"NOTED."

Summer groans. "This thing needs hobbies."

Back near the cars, Kaida pulls Lyrelle aside.

"You trust Prince," Kaida says quietly.

Lyrelle nods without hesitation. "With my life."

Kaida swallows.

Her phone buzzes hard in her palm.

"FINAL WARNING."

"PROTECT HER."

"OR TELL HER."

Kaida closes her eyes.

Across the lot, Jake waits for Kyra. She approaches slowly.

"You okay?" he asks.

She nods. Then shakes her head.

He opens his arms. She steps into them.

Behind them, Prince laughs at something Summer says.

Kyra's grip tightens.

Ryan's phone buzzes again.

A photo loads.

Him. The group. Taken today.

Caption underneath.

"YOU THINK YOU'RE INVISIBLE."

"YOU'RE NEXT."

He looks up.

Aurora stands across the lot, watching Jason.

Smiling.

The Shadow Game doesn't rush.

It never has.

It lets love bloom.

Jealousy spark.

Guilt rot.

And when everyone thinks they're safe again…

It chooses who bleeds.
