Chapter 4 - Mission

The days pass with activity as Kenny settles into his routine at the warehouse bunker. He wakes each morning to the aroma of coffee simmering over the campfire.

Kenny throws himself into work. He helps Jim and Mark reinforce the warehouse's defenses, hammering boards over broken windows and reinforcing doors with heavy chains. He assists Sarah in searching for supplies in nearby buildings.

Evenings are spent around the fire, sharing meals and stories. Kenny listens as Tom recounts their group's adventures.

As the days turn into weeks, Kenny finds himself getting closer to his new friends . He discovers that David is a former engineer, and Lisa was a nurse before the end of the world .

Maggie has also found her place in the group. She spends her days assisting Lisa at the clinic, learning the basics of medicine. In the evenings, she sits with Kenny.

As the sun begins to set, Kenny hears footsteps approaching the warehouse. He looks up to see Mark and Jim walking towards him.

"How's it going?"

"It was tough. We ran into a huge crowd near the old shopping center. We lost some supplies, but we managed to get through."

Mark takes off his bag and lets it fall to the ground.

"Yeah, but we got some good stuff too."

He takes out some food containers and a water bottle.

Mark moves closer.

"Listen, Kenny, we found something. A huge food distribution center. It'll last us for months."

"Really?"

"Yeah, but there's a problem. The place is full of dead. Hundreds of them, maybe more. We couldn't get close enough."

"I'll talk to Tom."

Mark's face lights up with hope.

"Do you think he'll agree?"

"I don't know, but it's worth a try. We can't let an opportunity like this slip away. We'll discuss this with Tom and the others.Let's see if we can come up with a plan."

As he walks through the door, Kenny's mind races with the idea of securing such a massive supply depot.

As the sun dips below the horizon, Kenny gathers everyone around the crackling fire.

Tom sits on a crate, his elbows resting on his knees, listening to Kenny recount Mark and Jim's discovery.

"So, you're saying there's a food distribution center nearby, stocked with enough supplies to keep us going for months?"

"That's right, but it won't be easy to get to." Mark and Jim said there were hundreds of dead blocking the entrance."

Tom leans back, carefully stroking his chin.

"It's risky."

Tom glances around at the group.

"It's dangerous. We can't lose people on a suicide mission like this."

"Well, we'll find another way."

As the group begins to disperse, heading to their sleeping quarters, Kenny stays by the fire. Maggie stays with him.

"What are you thinking about?"

Kenny sighs heavily, staring at the flames.

He turns to her.

"I'm going to that distribution center, with or without them."

"Kenny, no. You heard Tom. It's too dangerous. We...we can't lose you...I can't..."

"We need that food, Maggie, and I'm not going to sit idly by while our people starve. And I'll be fine, don't worry."

"I'll come with you. You're not doing this alone."

Kenny starts to protest, but Maggie cuts him off.

"Don't even think about it. I'm just as capable as you, and we both know it. Besides, what if something happens to you? Who will protect you then? Who's get your back? "

Kenny's heart swells with affection for this stubborn woman standing by his side. He knows he can't argue with her, not when she's right.

"alright , we're doing it my way."

"of course, We always do ."

Kenny smiles at her.

"Okay, we'll get out before the others wake up."

They hug for a long moment, then Maggie pulls away and smiles.

"Go get some rest. You'll need it tomorrow."
