Chapter 2 - 002. The Servers That Shouldn't Exist

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same things.

The door.

The darkness behind it.

The figure standing on the road.

And that voice.

You weren't supposed to remember.

At some point, I turned my computer back on.

The monitor came to life.

My desktop looked completely normal.

No strange messages.

No unfamiliar programs.

Nothing.

The message was gone.

I REMEMBER YOU.

But I knew I had seen it.

I could still remember the words.

The account.

Guest 666.

I opened my message history.

Nothing.

I searched for the name.

No results.

I searched again.

Still nothing.

I leaned back and rubbed my eyes.

Maybe I had imagined it.

Maybe I had fallen asleep at my desk.

Maybe the entire thing had been some kind of nightmare.

Then I remembered the door.

The voice.

The feeling of someone standing behind me.

I closed my eyes.

I didn't want to remember.

But the harder I tried to forget, the clearer the memories became.

The next morning, I opened my browser history.

I wasn't looking for anything specific.

I just needed proof.

Something.

Anything.

If I could find the page again, maybe I could convince myself that what happened had actually been real.

Most of the entries were normal.

Videos.

Searches.

Old websites.

Then I saw it.

I stopped scrolling.

THE FORGOTTEN SERVER

My stomach tightened.

I stared at the entry.

Underneath it was a timestamp.

PLAYED: 2 HOURS AGO

"That can't be right."

I had discovered the server yesterday.

Not two hours ago.

I clicked it.

The page loaded.

For a moment, everything looked normal.

Then a message appeared.

THIS EXPERIENCE IS UNAVAILABLE.

I frowned.

Below it:

SERVERS: 1

Only one.

I clicked.

A server list opened.

0 PLAYERS

I waited.

The number changed.

1 PLAYER

My name appeared beneath it.

ARTIST

I stared at the screen.

Then the list flickered.

2 PLAYERS

Another name appeared.

GUEST_666

My blood ran cold.

I blinked.

The name disappeared.

1 PLAYER

I pushed my chair away from the desk.

"No."

I closed the window.

Then opened it again.

Nothing.

I searched for the game.

No results.

I searched for the title.

Nothing.

I copied the address from my browser history and entered it manually.

This time, the page didn't load.

There was only a blank screen.

But one line of text remained.

server01.archive

I didn't recognize it.

I had never seen the page before.

At least, I thought I hadn't.

My browser history disagreed.

I stared at the address bar.

I could shut down the computer.

Walk away.

Forget about it.

That would have been the sensible thing to do.

Instead, I pressed Enter.

The screen went black.

A few seconds passed.

Then a loading bar appeared.

CONNECTING TO SERVER 01

10%

27%

64%

99%

The bar stopped.

I waited.

Nothing.

Then:

ERROR

I exhaled.

For the first time that morning, I smiled.

"Good."

I leaned back.

"That's it."

The screen flickered.

The error message disappeared.

A new message appeared.

CONNECTED

My smile vanished.

The gray world returned.

I knew it immediately.

The endless ground.

The black sky.

The silence.

The same place.

Only this time, I wasn't confused.

I knew where I was.

And that was worse.

I hadn't discovered this place.

I had returned to it.

Or maybe...

I had never really left.

I took a cautious step forward.

The ground flickered beneath my feet.

For a fraction of a second, it disappeared.

Then it returned.

I stopped.

"What are you?"

The world gave me no answer.

Then I saw it.

A door.

The same door.

It stood alone in the gray expanse.

But this time, there was something different.

A number had been carved into it.

01

I slowly approached.

My hand closed around the handle.

Part of me wanted to turn around.

The other part wanted to know what was behind it.

I opened the door.

There was no empty room this time.

A staircase descended into darkness.

I placed one foot on the first step.

Then another.

The door remained open behind me.

I kept going.

The staircase seemed to stretch forever.

After several minutes, I looked back.

The door was still there.

Or at least...

I thought it was.

I continued downward.

One step.

Another.

Another.

Then I heard something.

Step.

I stopped.

Silence.

I waited.

Nothing.

I placed my foot on the next step.

Step.

I froze.

That hadn't been me.

Slowly, I turned around.

The staircase was empty.

I continued.

Step.

Closer.

I walked faster.

The sound followed.

Step.

Faster.

Step.

Closer.

I stopped.

The sound stopped with me.

Silence filled the staircase.

I swallowed.

Then I continued walking.

I didn't look back again.

I didn't want to know what was following me.

Eventually, the staircase ended.

A corridor stretched before me.

It was impossibly long.

Doors lined both sides.

Each one carried a number.

01

02

03

04

05

06

And dozens more disappeared into the darkness.

I walked past them.

Door 01.

Nothing.

Door 02.

Nothing.

Door 03.

Nothing.

Then I reached 04.

The door was open.

Voices came from inside.

Several voices.

All speaking at once.

I couldn't understand the words.

I stepped closer.

One voice separated itself from the others.

"Hello?"

I turned.

Nobody.

The voice came again.

"Hello?"

This time, it was directly behind me.

I froze.

Slowly, I turned.

A Guest stood in the corridor.

A simple old avatar.

Gray.

Motionless.

It didn't breathe.

It didn't blink.

It simply stared at me.

I opened the chat.

My fingers felt strangely heavy.

who are you?

The reply appeared immediately.

DO YOU REMEMBER ME?

I stared at the words.

"No."

I typed it.

No.

The answer came instantly.

GOOD.

The Guest disappeared.

No animation.

No sound.

One moment it was there.

The next—

nothing.

I stared at the empty corridor.

Then I looked through the open door.

The room was enormous.

Rows of computers stretched into the darkness.

Dozens.

Maybe hundreds.

Every monitor displayed the same heading.

SERVER LOGS

I approached the nearest computer.

A list was open.

SERVER 01 — ACTIVE

SERVER 02 — LOST

SERVER 03 — LOST

SERVER 04 — ACTIVE

I scrolled.

More entries appeared.

SERVER 05 — DO NOT CONNECT

I stopped.

My finger remained on the mouse.

Why would anyone write that?

I scrolled further.

Another entry appeared.

USER: UNKNOWN

SESSION LENGTH: 11 YEARS

STATUS: WATCHING

I read the final word again.

Watching.

Someone had been connected for eleven years.

Someone was still here.

I stepped away from the computer.

"Who are you?"

I wasn't expecting an answer.

One of the monitors at the far end of the room suddenly turned on.

An old video began playing.

The footage was distorted.

The image flickered between frames.

I recognized the world.

A city.

Players walking through the streets.

There were dozens of them.

They moved like normal players.

Talking.

Running.

Laughing.

Then one stepped in front of the camera.

His face was almost impossible to see.

"If anyone finds this..."

Static swallowed the image.

Then the voice returned.

"Don't enter Server 05."

The screen flickered.

The player looked directly into the camera.

"It's not a server."

The screen went black.

I waited.

Nothing.

Then, from the speakers, I heard one final whisper.

"It's where they go."

The recording ended.

I stood there in silence.

Where they go.

The players who disappeared.

The accounts that had been deleted.

The names that no longer existed.

My thoughts returned to Guest 666.

I REMEMBER YOU.

I looked toward the corridor.

Toward the door marked 05.

It had been closed before.

Now it was open.

I walked toward it.

With every step, the air became colder.

There was nothing beyond the doorway.

No floor.

No walls.

No landscape.

Only darkness.

Not the absence of light.

Something else.

A space where the world simply stopped existing.

Beside the door was a small monitor.

SERVER 05

PLAYERS: 0

I stared at the number.

Then it changed.

PLAYERS: 1

I stepped backward.

I hadn't entered.

I hadn't touched anything.

The corridor behind me was empty.

I looked back at the monitor.

PLAYERS: 2

My heart skipped.

The server list appeared.

PLAYER 1 — ARTIST

Below it:

PLAYER 2 — GUEST 666

I stared at the name.

Then another line appeared.

PLAYER 3 — UNKNOWN

The letters began changing.

One at a time.

R

E

M

E

M

B

E

R

I backed away from the screen.

"No."

The word remained.

REMEMBER

Then I heard a voice behind me.

Very close.

"You came back."

I turned.

Nobody.

I looked at the monitor again.

The server list was gone.

A new message filled the screen.

WELCOME BACK, ARTIST

Beneath it:

LAST LOGIN: 11 YEARS AGO

I couldn't move.

Eleven years.

No.

That was impossible.

I hadn't been here eleven years ago.

I knew that.

I had to know that.

Then a memory surfaced.

A door.

This door.

I was smaller.

Much smaller.

Someone was holding my hand.

I tried to see their face.

I couldn't.

The memory vanished.

I opened my eyes.

"I was here..."

My voice barely existed.

"I've been here before."

Something moved behind me.

I didn't turn around.

I couldn't.

The monitor flickered.

SERVER 05 // CONNECTING

Then:

3 PLAYERS

The number changed.

4 PLAYERS

A whisper reached me from somewhere in the darkness.

Then another.

Then another.

Voices.

Dozens of them.

Some sounded far away.

Others were so close that I could feel their breath against my skin.

5 PLAYERS

I closed my eyes.

The whispers became louder.

Then—

6 PLAYERS

A quiet laugh echoed through the corridor.

Everything went black.

When I opened my eyes, six figures stood in front of me.

All of them were Guests.

All of them were completely still.

One stood in the center.

I recognized him.

Guest 666.

Behind them, something enormous began to rise from the darkness.

I couldn't see its shape.

I couldn't understand what I was looking at.

But I knew one thing.

The missing players hadn't disappeared.

They had never left.

They had been here all along.

Waiting.

And somehow...

I had been here too.

I just couldn't remember.

THEY NEVER LEFT.
