PROLOGUE — Mafia's Only Treasure

The city never truly slept—

But that night, it held its breath.

A storm was crawling across the sky, dark clouds swallowing the moon as if the universe wanted to hide what was about to happen. Sirens wailed in the distance, traffic stopped, lights flickered, and the whole world seemed to fold into silence… all because he had returned.

People whispered his name like a curse.

A few worshipped him like a legend.

Aaric knight.

The invisible king of an empire built in shadows.

A man who didn't show mercy—because mercy had never been shown to him.

That night, his convoy cut through the abandoned highway like a blade through smoke. The black cars moved in perfect rhythm, headlights slicing the darkness. Inside the first car, Aaric sat still, eyes fixed on a small silver pendant resting in his gloved hand. A faint scratch marked its surface, the only proof of the girl whose existence he had kept hidden from the world.

A girl he should've never crossed paths with.

A girl who should've stayed miles away from his world.

A girl who didn't know that her normal life was hanging by a single thread… a thread he was holding.

His jaw tightened as he whispered, almost to himself,

"Wherever you are… you won't be alone tonight."

He wasn't threatening her.

He wasn't protecting her.

He wasn't saving her.

He wasn't destroying her.

He was doing all of it at once.

Hours earlier, she had stepped into danger without even knowing.

She had seen something she shouldn't have.

A moment.

A mistake.

A secret that entire cities were built to hide.

And now, every enemy in the underground wanted the girl disappeared.

Aaric didn't know why he cared.

He didn't understand why the thought of losing her sent a strange ache across his chest.

But he knew one thing—

No one touches what's his.

Lightning split the sky as his car screeched to a halt. His men rushed forward, pointing at a small figure running through the rain-soaked street. Breathless, terrified… yet stubbornly alive.

Her.

Aaric stepped out of the car slowly, the storm wind whipping against his coat. His footsteps echoed as he approached her—calm, steady, inevitable. She froze, her eyes wide when she finally met his gaze.

He didn't smile.

He didn't soften.

But something in his eyes changed—danger shifting into something he had no name for.

"You should've stayed invisible," he said quietly

She trembled. "I—I didn't do anything…"

"No," he agreed. "But now… you matter."

A crack of thunder shook the ground.

Aaric raised his hand—

not to harm her,

not to threaten her,

but to shield her from the world that suddenly wanted her gone.

His voice dropped, cold and final.

"From this moment… you're under my protection.

And once I protect something…"

his gaze burned into hers,

"…I don't let it go."

She didn't know whether to run or breathe.

She didn't know if he was her danger…

or her only chance to survive it.

But one thing was certain—

her life would never be the same again.

Because the most feared man in the city had just claimed her…

And the shadows had just whispered their warning:

"The Mafia has found his treasure."
