Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: First Meeting with Ye Wenjie

Ye Zhetai smiled and said, "Yes, particle physics is indeed a good direction. It has only developed for a few years and has very broad prospects. However, this science heavily relies on experiments, and currently we don't have the capability to build high-energy accelerators, let alone colliders. So, if you want to research in this direction, be mentally prepared."

"Hmm, I've already decided," Yang Xuebin nodded.

Currently, the country does not have the ability to build high-energy accelerators, but with the talent of 'Hard work pays off' and his knowledge from his previous life, he can completely perfect the Standard Model decades in advance.

Once the theory is perfected, it will be simpler to verify when there is the capability to build accelerators in the future.

What he needs to do is to use his talent to raise the limits of Human Civilization as much as possible in the shortest time, guide a great explosion of Human Civilization, and thus surpass the Trisolaran Civilization.

"It's good that you've decided. Alright, let's eat first, and we can talk while we eat," Ye Zhetai said.

Shao Lin heard him and began to bring out the dishes from the kitchen.

"Ring… ring…" Just then, the telephone in the living room rang.

Ye Zhetai stood up, walked over, and picked up the phone: "Hello… Professor Wang… What, you found a pulsar signal… Good, good, good, Yang Xuebin just finished his thesis as well… Good, I'll wait for you in the office. This will be one of the greatest astronomical discoveries of this century."

Slam!

Ye Zhetai hung up the phone, turned around, and said excitedly, "Xuebin, Shao Lin, did you hear? Professor Wang said they found a pulsar signal, and they will send the relevant observation results over this afternoon."

Shao Lin exclaimed in surprise, "Really?"

Although Yang Xuebin felt very calm inside, he also put on a surprised expression… That afternoon, in the physics department office.

Professor Wang, accompanied by Ye Wenjie, rushed back from the Miyun Astronomical Observatory, while Yang Xuebin, Ye Zhetai, and other professors had already been waiting for a long time.

Ye Zhetai took the lead, excitedly saying, "Quick, give me the observation report."

Professor Wang was around fifty years old, with some graying at his temples.

He held a briefcase in his hand, and behind him followed a young, beautiful woman.

She was unadorned, and even in simple clothes, she could not hide her pure and naturally elegant demeanor, like a lotus emerging from clear water.

She possessed a quiet and intellectual beauty, like an orchid growing in a secluded valley.

It was Ye Wenjie.

As the 'true' protagonist of the first part of The Three-Body Problem, "Earth's Past," Yang Xuebin couldn't help but pay attention.

Anyone who has read The Three-Body Problem novels knows that while Wang Miao appears to be the protagonist of the first part, "Earth's Past," in reality, it can be said to be Ye Wenjie, because without Ye Wenjie secretly contacting the Trisolaran Civilization and exposing Earth's location, there would be no subsequent series of crises.

As the commander of the Three-Body Organization ETO, she was one of the biggest bosses in the first part.

As for Wang Miao, he could only be described as an entry point for the story.

Those who participated in Science Boundary could all have become the protagonist of the first part.

One can only say that Wang Miao was lucky to be chosen by Da Liu.

But Ye Wenjie's role is irreplaceable.

Although her life was full of misfortunes, and she witnessed the madness and ugliness of human nature,

she still maintained a sense of 'truth, goodness, and beauty' in her heart and did not develop the idea of destroying human society.

She secretly contacted the Trisolaris, hoping that the Trisolaris's fleet would descend upon Earth, not to destroy Earth's Civilization, but to use the Trisolaris to improve Earth's Civilization.

It was like the main tenet she established for the ETO: Human society can no longer solve its own problems by its own strength, nor can it restrain its own madness by its own strength; therefore, the Lord should be invited to descend upon the world, and with its power, forcefully supervise and transform human society to create a brand new, bright, and perfect Human Civilization.

In her view, higher civilizations should possess higher moral standards.

It's just a pity she was wrong.

In fact, moral standards and civilization levels are not directly proportional.

Just as in reality, highly educated people are not necessarily noble in character; they can also be scoundrels.

Later, perhaps to atone for her sins, she told Luo Ji the two fundamental axioms and two concepts, which allowed Luo Ji to finally comprehend the 'dark forest' law, securing the last glimmer of hope for Earth.

It can be said that she was both a betrayer of Earth's Civilization and a savior of Earth's Civilization.

Angel and devil, two sides of the same coin.

However, with him now, everything will be rewritten.

She should have a peaceful and happy life, not one of torment.

While Yang Xuebin observed Ye Wenjie, Ye Wenjie was also observing Yang Xuebin.

In her eyes, Yang Xuebin's appearance hadn't changed.

However, his entire spirit and demeanor had undergone some kind of transformation, evolving from a formerly quiet bookworm into someone full of vigor and ambition.

Their gazes met in the air.

Yang Xuebin smiled slightly and nodded, a greeting.

Ye Wenjie also nodded in response, as always.

Taking the observation report from Professor Wang's hand, Ye Zhetai scanned it at a glance, then soon burst into hearty laughter: "Good, good. With this observation report, the pulsar is confirmed."

"Let me see, let me see!"

The other professors gathered around, snatching the observation report from Ye Zhetai's hand:

"A continuous, regular pulsar signal, coming from the Vulpecula constellation, with an interval of 1.337 seconds. It seems this pulsar is quite large; its rotation takes more than a second."

"According to Yang Xuebin's thesis prediction, pulsars should be widely distributed throughout the cosmos. Since one has been found, then a second and a third should also be found."

"Western science has been ahead of us for too long; today, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief. We not only predicted pulsars first but also observed their existence with the fastest speed."

... The professors' faces were flushed with excitement and high spirits.

Professor Wang walked up to Yang Xuebin, looked him up and down, and praised him happily, "Yang Xuebin, you are excellent. Our university is proud of you, and our country is proud of you. Are you interested in becoming my graduate student and continuing to work in astronomical physics?"

Ye Zhetai quickly interjected, "Professor Wang, you're trying to poach my student right in front of me! Xuebin has already agreed to be my graduate student and plans to research High Energy Physics. You shouldn't think about it anymore."

"High Energy Physics, what a pity."

Professor Wang paused, sighed, and then said, "Where's the thesis? Let me see it."

"Here it is!"

Yang Xuebin turned and retrieved the thesis from Ye Zhetai's desk, handing it to Professor Wang.

After taking it, Professor Wang found a seat and began to read the thesis.

Ye Zhetai said to Yang Xuebin, "You should go back first. I will personally deliver the thesis and this observation report to the Journal of Astronomy later; it will definitely be published in the next issue."

"Professor, I appreciate your trouble."

"Haha. I hope there will be more such troubles in the future."
