Chapter 9 - Chapter 9:Standard Model

While Yang Xuebin was engrossed in his research on the Standard Model, his name also appeared overseas.

Especially in the astronomical community.

The prediction and observation of a new celestial body is an extremely significant event for the astronomical community.

"Oh my, God! This isn't real! How could such brilliant results come from such a backward Eastern country?!"

"This is a disgrace to our astronomical community."

"Yang Xuebin, that name is so strange, and he seems to still be an undergraduate. I seriously doubt the authenticity of this matter!"

"Fraud, this must be fraud, those despicable pigtailed people."

"Facts prove that the Eastern University has no scientific soil at all. All great scientific achievements come from our West. Moreover, with their backward education, how could they possibly deduce and discover pulsars?"

...Perhaps it was due to prejudice, or perhaps due to envy, jealousy, and hatred.

Most people reacted to Yang Xuebin's results with rejection and resistance, but there were still some rational individuals who studied Yang Xuebin's paper and found no issues.

So, they began to adjust their radio telescopes, attempting to search for pulsars in the night sky.

Since the Eastern country could find it within seven days, and using only a small radio telescope, there was no reason why they, with their large radio telescopes, couldn't find it.

Truth can never be concealed... Campus.

At Ye Zhetai's home.

Ye Zhetai sat on the sofa, smoking his pipe.

His voice was mellow and gentle, and he said with a smile, "Xuebin, the reason I called you over this time is to understand your recent study progress, and what topic you plan to research. Do you need my help in advising you?"

He felt very at ease with someone as talented and diligent as Yang Xuebin.

There was no need for too much supervision; just keeping him on the right general path was enough.

Yang Xuebin nodded and said, "I have finished reading all the books and journals related to High Energy Physics, and I have some ideas in mind. I would like Professor to offer his guidance."

Ye Zhetai put down his pipe: "Oh, go on."

Yang Xuebin organized his thoughts and slowly said, "High Energy Physics studies elementary particles, and the earliest concept of an elementary particle was the photon proposed by Einstein in 1905, later confirmed by experiments by Compton and others in 1922.

Later, in 1931, Pauli theoretically hypothesized the existence of a particle with no rest mass—the neutrino.

Actually, he predicted the antineutrino.

The existence of the neutrino was experimentally confirmed by Reines and Cowan in 1956.

Subsequently, in these years, more and more elementary particles were discovered, and antiparticles were also found.

So much so that, by now, the number of elementary particles we observe experimentally is even greater than those on the periodic table.

In 1961, Gell-Mann and Ne'eman, by analogy with the periodic table of chemical elements, proposed classifying hadrons using the symmetry of strong interactions.

The Eightfold Way classification not only provided the positions of the hadrons already discovered at that time but also accurately predicted some new particles, such as the Ω particle discovered in 1964 in a bubble chamber experiment.

The Eightfold Way very well explains the regularity of static properties of particles such as spin, parity, charge, strangeness, and mass."

Ye Zhetai listened quietly, nodding occasionally.

Yang Xuebin continued, "Although we have made a good classification of these elementary particles, and Glashow also proposed a unified theory of electromagnetic and weak interactions in 1961, it did not include strong interactions.

My idea is to create a Standard Model to describe the three fundamental forces—the strong force, the weak force, and the electromagnetic force—as well as the elementary particles that make up all matter."

Ye Zhetai's expression became serious, and he said in a deep voice, "This is indeed a very good topic, but it is too broad, and you might not see hope for ten or twenty years. But once completed, you will join the ranks of top physicists."

Yang Xuebin smiled slightly and said, "I have already thought it through, and I have some ideas in mind."

Ye Zhetai slowly nodded and said, "Alright, since you've made up your mind, I won't stop you. However, I'll only give you two years. If there's no progress within two years, then switch to another topic."

This topic was too grand; he worried that Yang Xuebin's ability might not be sufficient to complete it.

Fortunately, Yang Xuebin was young.

Even if he wasted two years, he would still be very young compared to his peers.

Since the student had such ambition, as his teacher, he certainly couldn't rudely refuse.

Yang Xuebin nodded and said, "Understood, Professor."

Ye Zhetai picked up his pipe, took a puff, and said, "First, write a project proposal. I have something coming up; I need to go on an inspection trip out of town with your mistress, and it might take half a month to return."

Yang Xuebin looked up and glanced at Shao Lin in the kitchen.

At that moment, Shao Lin also happened to turn her head and look.

From the sparkling eyes of Shao Lin, Yang Xuebin knew his plan had succeeded.

As long as Ye Zhetai left and entered the national key defense engineering project, he would naturally be able to complete the system task and thus avoid a series of tragedies.

While Ye Zhetai was in the restroom, Yang Xuebin quietly asked Shao Lin, "Mistress, after you leave, what are your arrangements for Eldest Senior Sister and Wen Xue?"

Shao Lin also said softly, "Wenjie is already an adult and is working on a project with Professor Wang, so I don't need to worry about her.

I have already left a letter explaining the situation, and I will ask Teacher Ruan to give it to her then.

As for Wen Xue, I have also entrusted her to Teacher Ruan.

With Teacher Ruan and Wenjie there, they will certainly be able to take good care of Wen Xue."

Yang Xuebin frowned.

Ye Wen Xue was only fourteen this year; if she continued to stay here, she would inevitably follow the old path.

Thinking of this, he said in a deep voice, "Mistress, I suggest you also take Wen Xue with you, or help her sign up for the 'Up to the Mountains and Down to the Countryside' movement, away from the troubles of Beijing. With her personality, she cannot withstand instigation."

Shao Lin's expression changed slightly, and she nodded solemnly, "Alright, then I'll take her with me."

Although she was selfish, it didn't mean she didn't love her children.

Compared to sending her youngest daughter to the countryside, she would rather keep her by her side; even if it was a bit tough, it would be easier to take care of her.

Yang Xuebin nodded, feeling relieved... Night.

When Yang Xuebin returned to the dormitory with his materials, he found the atmosphere somewhat somber.

Although the papers had been finished long ago, according to good study habits, everyone should have been reading and chatting.

He asked curiously, "What's wrong?"

Fang Yueming said in a deep voice, "The school announced today that the work arrangements have been postponed again until October."

In those days, university students were all assigned jobs.

Generally speaking, January to April was the preparation phase, with national unified arrangements.

May to June was the critical allocation period.

By July at the latest, job assignments had to be completed because the summer vacation followed.
