The year was roughly 54 of the Konoha calendar. The location was the Land of Rain.
It was the rainy season. The sky was gloomy, and the rain fell like endless strings of beads, coating the entire world in a layer of grey.
Inside the tallest steel tower in Amegakure.
A boy sat on the windowsill, staring blankly at the rain outside. He looked about twelve years old, with fair skin and dark eyes.
"Hey..."
The boy, Uehara Naraku, sighed heavily.
"It's been three months. The rain hasn't stopped for a single second."
He was a transmigrator.
Unlike other protagonists who start in the prosperous Konoha, he had woken up in the most depressed, war-torn, and gloomy village in the ninja world: Amegakure (Hidden Rain).
And to make matters more stressful, his identity was... sensitive.
"Naraku."
A cold, feminine voice came from behind him.
Uehara Naraku immediately jumped off the windowsill and stood up straight. He turned around to face the woman who had entered.
She was beautiful, with light blue hair and an orange flower made of paper in her hair. She wore the black cloak with red clouds—the uniform of the Akatsuki.
It was Konan. The "Angel" of the Rain.
"Teacher Konan!" Uehara greeted her with a bright, respectful smile.
Konan nodded slightly. Her expression was impassive, as always.
"You were sighing," Konan said. "Do you dislike the rain?"
"No!" Uehara shook his head vigorously. "I just... I want to be strong enough to stop the rain, so Teacher doesn't have to look so sad all the time!"
Konan paused. She looked at the boy. He was an orphan she had picked up three months ago. He had incredible talent for chakra control and a strange affinity for paper ninjutsu, so she had taken him in as a disciple.
"The rain stops for no one," Konan said quietly. "But your thoughts are... kind."
Uehara smiled innocently.
Internally, however, he was staring at a blue panel floating in the air.
[System Mission: Gain Konan's Recognition.]
Status: Incomplete.
Current Progress: 85/100.
"Almost there," Uehara thought. "Just a little more acting, and I can unlock my first skill."
He was not a naive child. He was a "Mastermind" in training. He knew that to survive in the Akatsuki—a group destined for destruction—he needed power. And to get power from his System, he needed to complete missions given by key plot characters.
"Come," Konan said, breaking his train of thought. "Today we continue your training in paper manipulation. If you can master the Paper Shuriken today, I have a gift for you."
"Yes, Teacher!"
Uehara followed her to the center of the room.
He raised his hand. Chakra flowed into the sheet of paper in his palm. It stiffened, folding itself into a sharp, four-pointed star.
Whoosh!
He threw it. The paper shuriken embedded itself deeply into the wooden target on the wall.
"Excellent," Konan's eyes showed a hint of approval. "Your control is improving faster than I expected."
[Ding!]
[Mission Complete: Gain Konan's Recognition.]
Reward: 100 Gold Coins.
Reward: Novice Gift Pack.
Uehara's heart raced. Finally!
"Teacher, what is the gift?" Uehara asked, acting excited like a normal kid.
Konan reached into her cloak and pulled out a small pouch.
"These are chakra induction papers," she said. "They are rare. Use them to better understand your nature."
"Thank you!" Uehara bowed.
"I have matters to attend to with Pain," Konan said, turning to leave. "Practice here. Do not leave the tower."
"Understood."
As soon as the door closed, Uehara's innocent expression vanished. He sat back down on the bed and rubbed his hands together.
"System, open the Novice Gift Pack!"
[Opening Gift Pack...]

Uehara stared at the skills. A grin slowly spread across his face.
"Twisted Fate..." he whispered. "Gold generation and a stun card? In the ninja world?"
He looked at the rain outside.
"This world is dangerous. Hanzō is watching. Obito is plotting. Zetsu is lurking. But..."
He summoned a Blue Card between his fingers.
"...with this, I can play the game."
