In the end, it was unanimously agreed that selling the egg at the guild wasn't feasible, as it was way too valuable. With the right buyer, the cost of an unhatched wyvern egg could easily reach millions, for a beast contracting it themselves, though the temptation was too great, as a smaller party without the right protection, the envy and jealousy of the others would only paint a target on their back.
"I know, let's just anonymously sell at the auction house", exclaimed Zoe
"No, any auction house big enough to hold that auction and guarantee our anonymity will require a lot of preparation, plus time is not on our side; should it hatch, its value drops significantly", lamented Logan
In this world, beast contracts are rare because they are shaped almost entirely by the creature's and tamer's willpower. Should a contract fail, it causes soul backlash to the initiate of the contract, i.e. the tamer, resulting in permanent consequences to their soul and mana core. Almost all young creatures have weak wills making it optimal for tamers to contract it as soon as possible but wyverns… even as hatchlings are fierce and untamed because of this, only those with abnormally strong wills can tame wyvern beasts (AN: all those capable of subduing, guiding, or earning the loyalty of such a stubborn and powerful creature are now powerful figures.) But unhatched eggs circumvent this by posing no resistance, their spirits still dormant and unformed, allowing contracts to take hold without challenge.
"What should we do, Nathan?" asked Leah.
"There is no time to waste, the egg looks to be about to hatch at most in a week, and we need to make use of it before it does", declared Nathan.
"No one will take this egg other than the high nobles due to the danger it brings
"And when dealing with the higher nobles, money is the least valuable thing; the most important thing is recognition"
None of the others disputed this fact because there are many adventuring parties as strong as them, if not stronger. Slaying a wyvern without damaging its organs or losing its blood, while still a feat worthy of respect, is not special enough to warrant special recognition.
People don't normally hunt wyverns, not just because of their lethality, but because when enraged, wyverns enter the berserk state, which makes them blindly charge towards their opponent with killing intent, no thoughts towards self-preservation or pain, which leads to adventurers literally hacking it to pieces to kill it, thereby destroying all thoughts of profit. The only reason they attempted to slay this wyvern was because of Logan, who joined this party, and bone arrows, which could take down a wyvern with one shot.
"So, I propose this in 3 days, the duke is hosting his sons' coming of age ceremony with all the nobles present, we give the egg to him as a gift, causing us to be renowned in the noble circle and get in the good graces of the duke and later his support in our future missions."
When Nathan finished speaking, the others frowned.
"But we are a low-level adventuring party, how would we be invited to the young Master's celebration?" asked Mark
"Let me worry about that."
