Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: Next Time: Kyokuhou’s Death! [K7]

November 16, 2011.

Auspicious: travel, bathing, rituals, nothing else; adopting children.

Inauspicious: marriage, breaking ground, burial, building a stove.

Tracen Academy.

Inside the Student Council President's office.

A horse girl with wavy brown hair lay sprawled across the sofa, lazily scrolling her phone in the kind of shameless slouch that made it feel like she'd turned this place into her living room.

In all of Tracen Academy, there weren't many people who treated the Student Council like home.

Maruzensky just happened to be one of them.

Mostly because she was a veteran—everyone had to admire her.

Even compared to Rudolf Symbol, Maruzensky could confidently say, "Hey, little Rudy!"

"Come on, cook a couple dishes for big sis, will you?"

Right now, Maruzensky was in the office, with Rudolf Symbol beside her.

She'd come to see an old friend and kill the afternoon.

But—

Her mind wasn't on the phone at all.

She kept opening an app, flicking through it, closing it, repeating pointless motions again and again…

Until she finally yanked a thread of awareness back into herself.

She sat up straight, but her thoughts were still somewhere else.

That odd sensation—like her mind and body were out of sync—was driving her crazy. Crazy enough that she couldn't even enjoy slacking off properly.

Why?

She didn't know.

She couldn't explain it.

She just kept replaying one scene in her head, over and over.

The day she and Rudolf Symbol had returned, they'd run into a white-haired horse girl on the road.

Maruzensky couldn't stop remembering the way she ran—serious, focused, violent in the way she lunged forward, like she was trying to devour the future.

The one they'd seen back then: Fuka Shirayuki.

At the time, Rudolf Symbol had judged that girl might not become a proper racehorse girl.

So she hadn't invited her.

But the more Maruzensky thought about it—the deeper the replay in her mind went—the more she felt Rudolf Symbol had been wrong.

Maybe that white-haired girl couldn't win the Classic Triple Crown.

Maybe she couldn't break out of the Deep Impact family's stranglehold, or beat the Gold family's Gold Ship.

But in Maruzensky's view…

If that girl entered long-distance races, she might actually be terrifyingly good.

Like Mejiro McQueen back then—dominating the Kikuka Sho and the 3200-meter Tenno Sho (Spring).

Just stretch the distance. Turn it into a battle of grit.

That horse girl…

Absolutely had a real chance to win a championship!

And there was nothing shameful about it.

The world was full of horse girls who specialized: the "Dragon King" of sprinting, Taiki Shuttle in the mile, long-distance aces like Rice Shower and Mejiro McQueen…

Were you going to say those girls were "embarrassing" too?

Mejiro McQueen won Tenno Sho (Spring) back-to-back.

The "Dragon King" dominated sprint races in Hong Kong.

Taiki Shuttle even traveled overseas and won the Prix Maurice de Gheest in France, bringing home an international crown.

Outside that brutal, orthodox battleground of middle distance—

Being strong in your own domain was a lucky thing.

Maruzensky finally reached the point where she couldn't sit on that feeling anymore.

She'd never been the type to swallow her emotions.

So, when she hit her limit, she lifted her head and asked the Emperor:

"Do you remember?"

"…What?" Rudolf Symbol, busy with paperwork, turned slightly to look at her.

Maruzensky explained, "That horse girl we ran into before."

Seeing the confusion in Rudolf Symbol's eyes, she added, "That day on the way back from JRA. The one we saw by the roadside…"

"You said she couldn't beat the monsters in the Gold family or the Deep Impact family…"

"So you didn't invite her to Tracen."

At that, Rudolf Symbol finally recalled it. "Yes. That did happen."

The Emperor stopped working.

She looked at Maruzensky seriously now, interest rising in her gaze.

So?

What are you going to say?

Maruzensky cut straight to it. "I disagree with your judgment."

"Oh?" Rudolf Symbol prompted smoothly.

Maruzensky continued, "I think that horse girl can develop as a long-distance specialist."

"Even if she really can't win on the mainstream Derby-style track against the ones you mentioned… I think if you move the stage to Tenno Sho (Spring), it's a completely different story."

"Emperor—invite her to Tracen."

A horse girl with that kind of "talent"…

Letting her be buried like that would be such a waste.

Maruzensky thought so, deeply.

"…" Rudolf Symbol rubbed her temple as she listened.

She was getting a headache.

To be honest, Rudolf Symbol was extremely busy right now—so busy she didn't have time to handle new recruits.

Tokai Teio's situation still wasn't resolved.

And besides…

The Emperor already had a junior she liked—someone named Fuka Shirayuki.

If this were the past, she would've rejected Maruzensky outright. As if she wouldn't know whether that horse girl was strong.

But remembering how she'd misjudged Shirayuki before, Rudolf Symbol held back and didn't speak too harshly.

Instead, she smiled faintly. "How about this?"

"?" Maruzensky gave her a puzzled look.

Rudolf Symbol said, "I already have a junior I'm fond of."

Then the Emperor's tone sharpened—serious in a way that made her look like a gambling god.

"Maruzensky."

"I've got a complimentary voucher for a Michelin three-star restaurant, plus two pairs of custom horseshoes—worth ten thousand dollars."

"This time, you go find that horse girl yourself."

"When you dig her up… we'll use the prize money earned by each of our favored juniors to compete."

"I'll bet my estate. I'll bet my life. I'll bet everything."

"This time, the junior I'm backing will absolutely be stronger than the one you back!"

Maruzensky clicked her tongue. "…Huh?"

"Fine," she said. "You're on."

She accepted the wager with her chin held high.

Even though the Emperor's eye for talent was famously terrifying—discovering generational monsters like Tokai Teio and Oguri Cap—

Maruzensky's confidence didn't lose to her.

If it was that girl…

This time, the Emperor would lose badly.

Since Rudolf Symbol wouldn't help her…

Maruzensky would dig up that white-haired horse girl herself.

She would absolutely have a bright future!

As that thought settled, Maruzensky walked right out of the Student Council office, ready to start searching for Fuka Shirayuki.

In reality, the "junior" both of them were talking about was the exact same person.

Even Shirayuki herself never imagined she'd become this sought-after.

Watching Maruzensky leave, Rudolf Symbol turned her gaze back to the headache-inducing pile of documents.

The Emperor let out a slow sigh.

At this point, she couldn't get back into serious work anymore.

So…

Why not check Shirayuki's recent updates?

Maruzensky—

This time, I have to win.

With that thought, Rudolf Symbol hit Enter…

And typed "Fuka Shirayuki" into a search engine, using an old-school doxxing technique.

And strangely enough, it actually returned something.

The first link that popped up made the Emperor freeze on the spot.

She stared, disbelieving, checked again and again to make sure she wasn't dizzy—

Then she blurted out:

"She's doing that?!"

Fuka Shirayuki confirmed entry in the G3 race: the Challenge Cup!

At that very moment.

JRA headquarters.

Ever since that last time—when the "green devil" had called and chewed them out like a dog in a storm—

JRA's efficiency had become bizarrely high.

Not only did Shirayuki's prize money get approved internally, taxed, and sent to her registered bank account at record speed…

Even her new race application didn't get scrutinized much.

In under thirty minutes, JRA had already pushed it through their fast-track approval channel.

Still…

On the application screen, a crowd of staff members had gathered around to discuss it.

Racer: Fuka Shirayuki

Application: Race Entry

Before December: G3 — Challenge Cup

Hanshin Racecourse, turf, 2000 meters (middle distance)

The staffer who saw the form first stroked his chin.

"She's entering a G3 that quickly?"

He wondered if she had some kind of confidence…

Or maybe…

When she beat Tokai Teio last time, she hadn't received praise—

Instead she'd gotten hit with "pure luck" and "slander," and it had made her angry?

Was she desperate to prove herself?

A young filly getting mad after hearing that kind of talk was totally normal.

Who wouldn't be mad?

Then the manager beside him frowned, recalling details about Shirayuki.

Like Rudolf Symbol, he'd paid attention to this little one because she was a junior backed by the "green devil."

He remembered the online chatter about her.

People said she used to be a part-time clerk—working at convenience stores and flower shops, basically customer service.

He also remembered an order from a senior named Hayakawa:

"This kid can barely survive! Hurry up and pay her prize money, you idiots!"

So…

Was she short on cash?

The manager immediately connected the dots.

Did that prove the rumors were true?

If you came from money, who would be working to cover living expenses from such a young age?

And…

Ever since Shirayuki won her debut race, one image had stuck in the manager's mind with painful clarity:

Her crying backstage.

Was it because she was overwhelmed?

Her little sister—who clearly loved her—running to her in shabby clothes, chasing life while also chasing dreams…

The manager's thoughts started stacking into a chain:

Sister. Tears. Ordinary people. Living. Not enough money.

And suddenly he realized—

There was a story inside Fuka Shirayuki.

A story worth digging up.

In the language of sports, it could become a "documentary," a "feature interview"…

He felt Shirayuki fit every single requirement perfectly.

There was something unusual about her.

If they could package it properly…

It might explode in popularity as a special feature.

Just imagine it:

An ordinary horse girl beating Tokai Teio—already a legendary story.

And what if…

What if she carried a reason she had to win?

If she couldn't win this race and become a pro horse girl, she'd have to go back home and work.

This was her only chance in life.

In a dark world, a drowning person clawing at a vine, fighting to climb.

Poverty couldn't cover up a girl's inferiority complex—and it couldn't extinguish that spark-like ambition!

CARVED: FLOWER — the flower of youth will bloom at last!

"Ah—!"

The manager shouted out loud the moment it all clicked.

Even if people accused him of abusing his power…

He had to arrange a documentary for Shirayuki.

And if they couldn't do that level of production, then it had to be a full feature interview!

A forty-four-minute interview video—minimum!

He would put her story in front of the world.

This would be the birthplace of a "legend"!

This would be a story like the "Ashen Cinderella"—

No.

Not a "second Cinderella."

It would be the one and only story:

A girl burning like fire, striking the long-silent guitar strings, roaring to the world that she was coming—

The Flower of Youth: Fuka Shirayuki!

"Miss Kyokuhou."

"Please begin today's training."

The shameless Fuka Shirayuki curled up on the bench, took off those long boots, and casually handed them to Kyokuhou.

Kyokuhou accepted them with reverence—like she'd been handed holy relics.

Like Gollum clutching the ring:

"My precious…"

She held them carefully with both hands, even though they were literally just shoes.

Over this stretch of days, their bond had only grown closer.

They'd become the perfect partners on the training track—showing up on time, day after day, training together.

Though "partners" didn't quite capture it.

Honestly…

Kyokuhou even felt guilty toward this classmate.

Every time Kyokuhou arrived, this classmate would stop her own training—

And hand over that "treasure blessed by the Three Goddesses," letting Kyokuhou train to patch up her weaknesses.

It was great.

And over this time, Kyokuhou's strength had skyrocketed.

All because of the girl in front of her.

But there was a problem.

Kyokuhou was worried this classmate's own growth would stall because she wasn't training enough.

Her eyes held clear concern.

"Classmate…"

"Mm?" Shirayuki wore her usual emotionless smile, her voice sweet to an almost dangerous degree.

It hit Kyokuhou right in the brain.

Kyokuhou shook her head hard.

No. No. Get those messy thoughts out of my head.

"What about your own training?" Kyokuhou asked anxiously.

Shirayuki tilted her head and reached out, teasingly catching a strand of Kyokuhou's hair with her fingertip.

"It's fine…"

"As long as Miss Kyokuhou improves, I'm happy~"

Her tone rose at the end, syrupy and light.

Kyokuhou almost burst into tears.

Listen to that. Just listen!

That selfless spirit.

That kind-hearted desire to help others.

She really was an angel!

How could there be a horse girl this good in the world?

Kyokuhou swore she would use this classmate as her model—

To shoulder the "big sister" responsibility of caring for her own little sister, and caring for juniors.

During this time spent with Fuka Shirayuki…

Kyokuhou had completely fallen.

She'd become Shirayuki's devoted follower.

Her gaze drifted unconsciously down the other girl's beautifully shaped calves—

Then locked onto Shirayuki's feet in white stockings like an auto-aim system.

"Hm?" Shirayuki made a small sound of curiosity.

Kyokuhou shuddered. "Nothing!"

If an angel noticed she had desires, maybe Faust would drag her straight into hell, right?

Shirayuki laughed softly.

As if she were silently permitting Kyokuhou's little slip.

And Kyokuhou was thinking hard about how to repay Shirayuki.

Getting something for free felt awkward.

Money?

Who in Tracen Academy was short on money? They could all earn prize money by racing.

And besides—money was too vulgar.

It would ruin the bond between them.

In the end…

Kyokuhou's eyes hardened with determination.

"Classmate!"

"Mm." Shirayuki answered lightly.

Kyokuhou continued, "I heard the news. Fuka Shirayuki has registered for the next race."

"In half a month, the Challenge Cup—2000 meters. That's completely my home turf!"

"And I've been using your treasure to train mid-distance for so long, so I'm completely confident!"

Shirayuki asked, curious, "Confident about what?"

Kyokuhou declared, "Confident I can avenge you!"

"This time, I will make Fuka Shirayuki lose completely!"

"If I can't win, then I'll fight to the very last moment and die on the battlefield!"

"I'll hold a press conference and publicly target Fuka Shirayuki!"

Shirayuki thought: If I have to hear one more recycled Three Kingdoms meme, I'm stabbing my own ears.

Then she said, "Start today's training."

"Enemy troops are pressing in—train properly for me, Miss Kyokuhou!"

The "mom" planted her hands on her hips and started barking orders again, and thankfully Kyokuhou trained like her life depended on it.

I am doing something greedier than I should.

Kyokuhou slowly reined in the chaotic thoughts in her head.

Her gaze cooled.

She stepped onto the track again, fully focused.

If she kept growing like this, she could even kick that "Lady" to death with ease.

[Speed +1]

[Speed stat breaks 300!]

[Mid-distance aptitude proficiency: 99 km / 100 km]

[Mid-distance aptitude proficiency: 0 km / 1000 km]

[Mid-distance aptitude:]

[Upgraded from C to B]

Seeing both requirements achieved, Shirayuki looked at Kyokuhou running with all her might and smiled with cruel satisfaction.

Look at you, you dummy…

Time flashed by.

When the sun set again and only faint stars clung to the night sky, training on November 16 ended.

Half a month later would be the Challenge Cup.

Shirayuki put on the "King of Kings, Boot-in-Boot" again and asked:

"Miss Kyokuhou."

"You haven't registered for the Challenge Cup yet, right?"

When Kyokuhou pulled her own horseshoe training shoes back on, she felt like the Cinderella in a fairy tale.

She replied, "Right."

"But I'll register soon."

"I need momentum… I need to use Fuka Shirayuki as the stepping stone I climb with."

"When the moment comes that we meet on the same stage, I will become the strongest queen mare!"

Shirayuki nodded, not quite understanding, not quite caring.

Still smiling, she said, "That's a good thing."

Kyokuhou hesitated, then asked, "By the way… we've known each other for so long, but I still don't know your name."

"When I beat Fuka Shirayuki, will you tell me your name?"

"I believe… we can become good friends."

Shirayuki's lips twitched.

You're asking me?

My name is Fuka Shirayuki.

She shrugged casually and said, "You won't have to wait that long. You'll know my name soon."

"…?" Kyokuhou looked confused.

But seeing Shirayuki didn't want to dig into the topic, she asked again:

"Are you coming tomorrow?"

Shirayuki just waved a hand.

"If we're meant to…"

"We'll meet again."

"I believe we have fate."

As her words fell, Shirayuki's back almost vanished at the end of Kyokuhou's sightline.

Kyokuhou stared after her, suddenly feeling wistful.

This parting… who knew how long until they met again?

She could only hope the girl was right—that they really did have fate.

Kyokuhou felt an emptiness bloom in her chest.

Like she'd lost something important.

For no clear reason.

It hurt.

She pressed a hand to her chest.

November 16, 2011. Auspicious: adopting children.

Time passed again, and soon it was ten days later.

Unlike Tokai Teio's almost jokingly fast race schedule…

A year-end interview happened to catch Kyokuhou's family.

One by one, the wishful horse girls spoke about their goals for next year.

The Gold family had their own—this was the beginning of dreams for many young horse girls.

That "Lady" said she would become the Triple Crown Queen of fillies and the strongest queen.

Another said she would someday achieve those things.

And "Strike" said her dream was to "shine."

Strike had no idea…

That the thing that would make her truly shine wasn't in Japan.

It was on the far side of the world—Dubai, the UAE—where the desert flower story had yet to even begin.

But—

Step. Step.

A horse girl climbed the stairs, walked over the red carpet, and took the main seat on the high platform.

Her name was Kyokuhou.

The Snow Country Highlands, the Unyielding Summit—Kyokuhou.

Camera flashes washed over her.

Someone asked, "Miss Kyokuhou, what is your dream?"

"To defeat that Lady? To win the Triple Crown for fillies? One of them? To be as outstanding as Miss Deep Impact?"

The reporter rattled on.

But Kyokuhou only said calmly, "That kind of thing is too far away."

"A thousand years is too long. I only fight for today."

The reporter froze. "Then what do you mean…?"

"What I want to announce is my entry—half a month from now," Kyokuhou said.

"G3 race, the Challenge Cup—my first step as a queen."

Hearing that, the reporter froze again.

W-wait a second!?

Wasn't that race already confirmed to include Fuka Shirayuki?

That news had been circulating for over ten days.

Everyone wanted to see what the girl who beat Tokai Teio would do in her second race.

Was it luck—beating an out-of-form Teio?

Or was it pure strength?

People couldn't wait for the Challenge Cup to begin.

This G3 was drawing far more attention than her debut ever did.

And at that exact moment—

Kyokuhou loudly announced she would enter the Challenge Cup.

Which meant—

Was she openly targeting Fuka Shirayuki?

She hadn't said it earlier. Not when things were quiet. Not when it would've been easy.

She chose the biggest stage possible.

Flashbulbs exploded nonstop, as if trying to turn this moment into eternity.

A reporter finally couldn't hold back.

"But that race has Fuka Shirayuki in it…"

"Are you trying to compete with Fuka Shirayuki?"

Clever question.

Kyokuhou glanced at him and answered, "Of course."

"I was asked by an old acquaintance… she wants me to help her defeat Fuka Shirayuki."

"To be honest, I owe that person a lot."

"So…"

"What I mean is—"

"The Challenge Cup championship!"

"I will not yield!!!"

The reporter asked again, "But that's Fuka Shirayuki—the one who beat Tokai Teio!"

Kyokuhou started spouting dramatic nonsense.

"You think I'll lose?"

"That record of beating Tokai Teio?"

"In our world, sometimes we lose races we shouldn't because of certain factors…"

"But luck won't always stand on Fuka Shirayuki's side."

"I'm going to tell Fuka Shirayuki this: In the world of horse girls, only strength is absolute!"

"I will defeat Fuka Shirayuki!"

"I will become queen!!!"

"This farce is over!"

Kyokuhou kept saying dramatic nonsense in front of the cameras.

But in her mind, she was still thinking—about everything that had happened.

That unknown "angel" classmate.

You'll see this interview too, right?

Thank you for everything these past days.

With all the help you've given me…

I won't lose.

Kyokuhou stood there under the spotlight and declared it.

On the television beside her, that interview was playing.

Fuka Shirayuki nodded with satisfaction.

Thanks for hyping it up for me, Miss Kyokuhou.

This time, I won't even have to stir up the drama myself.

Then Shirayuki looked at her own stats—

Speed at 300, and mid-distance aptitude at B.

And thanks for working so hard these days too, Miss Kyokuhou.

Her pale, slender fingers danced across the keyboard.

"Chapter 16: Kyokuhou's Death!!"
