Chapter 35 - Tides of change

Mia's POV

The city had that quiet hum that only late afternoons seemed to hold, the golden light brushing the buildings in a glow that made even the mundane beautiful. I stood on the balcony of my apartment, Ace beside me, the sounds of the streets below a soft undertone to the rapid beating of my heart.

Life was moving fast, too fast sometimes. Projects at work, deadlines, client meetings, decisions that had nothing to do with love but still demanded my full attention. Yet through all of it, Ace had been steady, unwavering. A tether to the chaos that no one else could provide.

"I swear, Mia," Ace said, leaning against the railing, hand brushing mine, "if you get any more stressed about work, we're leaving this city for a weekend getaway. No phones, no emails, just us and maybe some wine."

I laughed softly, letting my head rest against his shoulder. "You make it sound so easy."

"It is," he said simply. "If you're willing to let me help carry it with you."

The words sank in. Real. Adult life wasn't about perfect moments or easy days—it was about choosing to share the weight, to face responsibility and joy together. That was what made love real, not just passion or kisses or nostalgia.

Later, Lily and James arrived, as they always did when chaos threatened to creep in unnoticed. Lily waved a hand at Ace and me. "There they are! Domestic bliss central! We were starting to think you'd run off and leave the city for romance's sake."

James grinned, carrying a small bag of groceries. "And we brought snacks. Adult snacks. Because apparently, you two are allowed to enjoy life now that you're officially coupled."

I rolled my eyes but smiled. It was comforting, the way they always knew when to poke, when to tease, and when to support.

Ace guided me to the couch, sitting me down gently. "They're harmless," he said softly, his thumb brushing over the back of my hand. "Mostly."

"Mostly," I echoed, laughing. "Though I suspect Lily has plans for my heart and my social calendar."

"You're probably right," he admitted, leaning back. "But we'll survive. Together."

The evening passed with laughter, shared stories of misadventures at work, and gentle teasing. Lily kept up a running commentary on our "adult couple" status, while James meticulously inspected Ace like some kind of quality control inspector for my heart.

"So," Lily said finally, leaning forward, smirk on her face, "how are we handling… the past? You know, Liam? Or is that officially closed chapter?"

I hesitated. Liam had stepped back, accepted his role as my past, and respected my choice. But the presence of his memory, the occasional messages or chance encounters, still tugged at something inside me.

"It's closed," I said firmly. "I've forgiven him. I don't need more than friendship. He's part of my past. That's it."

Ace squeezed my hand under the table, grounding me. "And he's respected that," he added quietly. "He's not a threat to us. Not now, not ever."

Lily raised an eyebrow. "Careful. You sound like you need reassurance, but I get it. He's part of the story. Not the ending."

James leaned back, folding his arms. "Exactly. And we're not letting anyone disrupt the ending you two deserve. Not a chance."

I smiled, grateful for them, for Ace, for this moment of stability.

Later that night, Ace and I walked through the quiet streets, the city lights reflecting in puddles from a light drizzle. The cool air made me shiver slightly, and Ace's arm went around me automatically.

"I can't believe how much easier life feels," I said, letting my voice carry on the night wind. "With you. It's… ridiculous."

"Not ridiculous," he replied. "It's real. Adult life is messy, chaotic, but it's better when we face it together."

I nodded. "I'm still… adjusting. To this. To us. To being honest with myself about what I want and who I want it with."

He stopped walking and turned to me, gently cupping my face. "You don't have to rush, Mia. You've already been through so much. You're allowed to feel everything, in your own time. But know this—I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. You don't have to be afraid anymore."

I let out a soft breath, the tension I didn't realize I'd been carrying finally loosening. "I'm not afraid," I whispered, though the truth was that fear had been there for months—fear of choosing, fear of losing, fear of vulnerability. "Not with you."

He smiled, brushing a damp strand of hair from my face. "Then let's move forward. Step by step, together."

I nodded, and for the first time in a long time, the world felt right.

The next day brought work stress, a sudden client emergency, and a last-minute meeting. Life was relentless. And yet, Ace had been by my side, texting reminders to eat, picking up groceries, and keeping me grounded.

That evening, we met Lily and James at their apartment for dinner—a casual, chaotic gathering that had become our unofficial ritual.

"Adulting is exhausting," Lily said, pouring wine. "But watching you two actually navigate it successfully? Inspirational. Even if slightly nauseating."

James grinned, shaking his head. "We're here to support. And remind you both that love doesn't mean you get to skip paying bills."

I laughed, leaning into Ace's shoulder. "Noted. Bills and love. Got it."

Ace pressed a soft kiss to my temple. "Exactly. And we'll survive both. Together."

Later, Lily and James stepped away to chat in the kitchen, leaving Ace and me alone. The apartment was quiet, warm, intimate.

"You know," I said, my voice low, "this… us… it feels… anchored. Like we're finally in a place where the chaos can exist, but we don't get swept away."

He smiled softly, brushing my hair back. "Exactly. Life will always throw challenges, Mia. Adult responsibilities, work, past ghosts. But as long as we hold onto each other, we won't just survive. We'll thrive."

I nodded, the weight of the day's stress falling away. "I think… I'm ready to fully trust this. Fully trust us."

He leaned down, pressing his forehead to mine. "Then we do it together. No running. No hiding. Just us."

I smiled, resting my head against his chest. "No running. No hiding."

The night ended with quiet laughter, clinking glasses, and the comforting presence of friends who had always been there. Lily teased, James grinned, and Ace held me close. Life wasn't perfect—but it was ours.

The past had its place. The present was ours to shape. And the future… we'd take it together, step by step, choice by choice, anchored hearts ready for whatever tides came next.

And for the first time, I wasn't afraid.

I was ready.
